The Dolphins have some injury issues at running back, but that isn’t stopping them from parting ways with one member of the backfield. According to multiple reports, they have informed Aaron Shampklin that he is one of their cuts as they move to set their initial 53-man roster. Shampklin played three games for the Steelers last season and ran six times for 17 yards. He ran four times for 14 yards in Miami’s final preseason game. Neither De’Von Achane nor Jaylen Wright played in that game for the Dolphins. After that game, McDaniel said Achane should return from a calf injury for Week 1 and that Wright is week-to-week with a leg injury. Rookie Ollie Gordon and Mike Boone are the other backs currently on the roster.
I think Marshall Jr made Hilton expendable. Still thought they might keep him for depth. Hopefully we have our eye on making a cornerback claim (or two) from other teams cutdowns.
That's the worst part. You get to 53, but the real number is probably 50 or 51 since they're going to snag a few people. So you have two fringe players make the squad, party like rock stars with their family, then they're cut the following day. My heart goes out to the ones in that situation.
Cornerback Mike Hilton’s agents told ESPN that their client has been informed of his release and Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reports that running back Mike Boone is also being released. Hilton was listed as a first-team nickel corner on the team’s unofficial depth chart, but practice reps and playing time indicated that fifth-round pick Jason Marshall is going to play that role for the Dolphins. Boone joins Aaron Shampklin as backs the Dolphins are cutting loose, which leaves rookie Ollie Gordon as the only healthy back. De’Von Achane has a calf injury and Jaylen Wright is battling a leg injury.
Looking through the current list of cuts, the saints cut Cam Akers and the niners cut Ameer Abdullah for what it's worth. The only names I recognize at the RB spot. Probably some much better younger talent put there but those were the only ones I recognized considering we just need some bodies to be on the field week 1. At least Ameer coming from SF would know the system.
Another year of Julian Hill as the primary run blocking tight end. Bring on the false start and holding penalties every week.
Here's the team announcement: The Miami Dolphins announced today that they have released cornerback Cornell Armstrong, linebacker Quinton Bell, running back Mike Boone, tight end Pharaoh Brown, tackle Jackson Carman, cornerback Cameron Dantzler Sr., defensive tackle Matt Dickerson, cornerback Mike Hilton, tight end Chris Myarick and cornerback Kendall Sheffield. The team also waived cornerback BJ Adams, wide receiver Andrew Armstrong, offensive lineman Mason Brooks, offensive lineman Braeden Daniels, wide receiver Erik Ezukanma, tackle Ryan Hayes, wide receiver AJ Henning, defensive tackle Alex Huntley, linebacker Dequan Jackson, linebacker Mohamed Kamara, offensive lineman Jalen McKenzie, linebacker Derrick McLendon, safety Patrick McMorris, linebacker Grayson Murphy, offensive lineman Josh Priebe, cornerback Ethan Robinson, tight end Hayden Rucci, safety John Saunders Jr., running back Aaron Shampklin, defensive tackle Ben Stille, linebacker Channing Tindall, wide receiver Theo Wease Jr. and offensive lineman Addison West; waived/injured tackle Bayron Matos, and waived/injury settlement linebacker Eugene Asante. Additionally, the Dolphins moved offensive lineman Liam Eichenberg to the reserve/physically unable to perform list and placed offensive lineman Andrew Meyer and kicker Jason Sanders on the injured reserve list. The team listed Meyer and Sanders as designated for return.
Murphy is the biggest surprise imo, thought he would make the team. I certainly would have kept him over Cam Smith, who is a waste of a roster spot. PS. The Packers cut Isaiah Simmons - I’d bring him in for a look.
The Dolphins placed kicker Jason Sanders on injured reserve Tuesday and they announced their plans to fill the spot on Wednesday. General Manager Chris Grier said at a press conference that the team will sign Riley Patterson to the practice squad. He was one of four kickers to work out for the team this week. Grier said that plan is for Patterson to remain on the practice squad and be elevated on a temporary basis for the first three weeks of the season. That’s the maximum number of elevations that a player can be elevated without being released. Sanders will have to miss at least four games with his hip injury, so the Dolphins will have to make another decision about their kicker plans at some point. Patterson appeared in games for the Jets, Browns, and Falcons last season. He’s also kicked for the Lions and Jaguars and has made 63 of the 74 field goals he’s tried over the course of his career.
The Dolphins officially added veteran cornerback Rasul Douglas to their roster on Wednesday, but they also lost another corner for at least the first four games of the season. General Manager Chris Grier told reporters at a press conference that Cam Smith will be placed on the non-football injury list. Smith was active during the preseason and Grier did not disclose what led to the NFI move. Smith was a 2023 second-round pick and he’s played 21 games for the team. He had 18 tackles in those appearances. Grier said that the Dolphins will re-sign offensive lineman Kendall Lamm, who was part of the Eagles’ cuts to get to the 53-player limit on Tuesday. Lamm played 33 games and made 16 starts for Miami over the last three seasons. The Dolphins also waived safety Jordan Colbert in Wednesday’s roster moves.
The Dolphins are short on healthy backs right now and they’re bringing back a familiar face to help them make sure they have enough players available. Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that they are going to sign Jeff Wilson to their practice squad. Wilson was released after a brief return to the 49ers this summer. Wilson played for the Niners from 2018 until he was traded to the Dolphins in 2022. He ran 141 times for 637 yards and three touchdowns in 27 games for the team. De’Von Achane has been battling a calf injury and Jaylen Wright is not expected to play in Week 1 due to a leg injury. Rookie Ollie Gordon was the only other back on the initial 53-man roster.
The Dolphins signed Rasul Douglas on Wednesday and they’re adding another cornerback to the mix as well. The NFL announced that they made a successful waiver claim on JuJu Brents. The Colts cut Brents on Tuesday. Brents was a 2023 second-round pick and he started eight of the nine games he played as a rookie. He had 43 tackles, an interception, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery in those appearances, but his 2024 campaign ended after two games due to a knee injury. The Dolphins had a need for cornerback help after trading Jalen Ramsey and losing Kader Kohou and Artie Burns to season-ending injuries. General Manager Chris Grier said on Wednesday that Cam Smith is going on the non-football injury list as well, so Brents and Douglas should both have a shot at early playing time in Miami.
