1. Ryan 2. Brohm 3. Woodson 4. Henne 5. Brennan I think Brennan's play tonight just dropped him from a 2nd round pick, to a possible 3rd or 4th. Henne looked really good today. Poise in the pocket, accuracy, and toughness. If we are going to draft a QB, we better do it early. If not, look for a QB lineup of Beck, Lemon and a free agent.
Brennan just proved what he really is: A QB who can play against teams that don't pressure him- a QB who plays great in a system as long as it creates mismatches against weaker teams. I've been saying all along that he won't be a good NFL QB. Granted, one game doesn't prove anything and it wasn't his fault he was sacked 8 times and constantly pressured. Georgia had him rattled and frustrated. Anyway, aside from the bowl game performance, it's typical for QBs who play in spread, wide-open style offenses in college to struggle in the pros. There are a number of examples of this. For whatever reason, it just doesn't transition into the NFL. Some might disagree, but I just don't see anything special about Brennan.
I don't look for Lemon to be back. We'll have Beck, a veteran free agent, and a journeyman type free agent as the third QB (if we don't draft one late).
I think it would have been very difficult for Ton Brady to have established himself last night let alone Colt Brennan. Mark Richt had a gameplan to contain Hawaii and it was to bring as much pressure as possible to cut it off at the source and it worked. I don't see how one game knocks Brennan down 2 rounds. What I think is much more important are the Senior Bowl practices in Mobile.
I agree, no doubt, that Brennan had little chance against Georgia. Their game plan was great and they worked it to perfection and gave Brennan fits. Basically, I'm just pointing out the fact that Brennans numbers are so great because of how well he plays in the spread system against what is by far weaker opponents than he faced yesterday. (Typically). I also worry about QBs who come from those types of offenses. They just never seem to pan out in the NFL. His stock could definitely go up after the combines. He'll need a very good one to push his stock back up after the game Tuesday - even though being outmanned and outcoached is not his fault. The NFL scouts, fair or not, seem to frown on games like this and, in their minds, it always reflects on the QB. I see Brennan as a project QB who definitely has the tools, but has a lot to learn before he is an effective player in the pros. What do you think Boom? What kind of time-table do you see for him? And where do you see him going in the draft. I say Mid-3rd to early 4th. As of right now that is.
hopefully we can trade down and get a ryan...but if we cant we can go defense with the #1 pick and maybe get brennan in the 2nd-3rd round
Agreed with your take on this Roman. Another QB who rose in my books was Ainge but that may be because I simply wrote him off. He's probably a 3rd rounder also and I think will go before Brennan. The wild card is of course Flacco but we'll have to wait until the all star games and combine before any slot can be assigned him with any confidence
It wouldn't surprise me if one of the top three (Ryan, Brohm and Woodson) fall to the second round just because there might not be teams interested. Free agency is going to be very interesting this season, there might be some decent quarterbacls floating around.
Being a Florida fan. I will say Henne did look good yesterday, but we didn't give him much pressure either. You really like to see how a qb reacts to pressure. I think another you can add to that list is Eric Ainge he makes quick reads and gets rid of the ball quickly!
To rank Brennan on last nights game is extremely inaccurate. There isnt a QB in the land that couldve done any better. Now then, I have been saying for a month, and I still stick to it. There isnt a QB in the draft worthy of a top 10 pick..and I dont think that any are in the top 30 players overall..
The problem is too many uninformed fans expect a qb to come in and fix our problems on offense. In truth we need to fix our offense before any qb can have success. I still think Parcells will ride with Beck and pick a qb in free agency. Beck will be fine!
Nah, Ryan and Brohm are at least top 30 players for this draft. Whether or not they're top 10 is debateable, but they're both most definately top 30 prospects. If you're so confident, name those 30 players.
I think you overrate the talent available at other positions. Ryan is definitely top ten on talent alone and Brohm is probably also. When you add in how much more important the QB position is when compared to others and how much more difficult it is to find a quality QB Ryan goes top 5
Those "weaker" opponents that Hawaii faced had probably just as much talent as the Hawaii team did though, if not more. Do you know the recruiting budget at Hawaii? June Jones hasn't taken a recruiting trip on the mainland in something like 3 years. Oh, and Warren Moon came from this type of offense.
Of course this is all subjective, but will be easy. In no particular order Chris Johnson Derreick McFadden Mike Hart Malcolm Kelly LImas Sweed Desean Jackson Early Doucet Mario Manningham Fred Davis Martin Rucker Jake Long Jeff Otah Ryan Clady Gosder Cherilus Sam Baker Eric Young Chris Long Vernon Gholston Calais Campbell Quentin Groves Chris Ellis Glenn Dorsey Kentwan Balmer Sedrick Ellis Frank Okam Marcus Harrison Dan Connor Shawn Crable James Laurengitus Beau Bell Keith Rivers Ali Highsmith J Leman Mike Jenkins Malcolm Jenkins Antoine Cason Kenny Phillips I could easily add to this list.....
Well I can think of about 20 of the top of my head. 30 might be a stretch but I can definitely see how some can legitimately think there are a solid 15-20 prospects ahead of any QB. Chris Long Glen Dorsey Vernon Gholston Darren McFadden Jake Long Mike Jenkins Jeff Otah Gosder Cherilus Sedrick Ellis Dan Connor James Lauranitis Keith Rivers Limas Sweed Early Doucet Ryan Clady Derrick Harvey Kenny Phillips Adarius Bowman Quentin Groves Chris Ellis Ali Highsmith
On the contrary, QBs are usually overrated because of their position. A top 10 QB could easily be only top 30 talent wise.
Prez, I think you may want to take another longer look at Eric Ainge. He is a guy that people will like because of his size and stats (and they are good)...but he gets a lot of 2 receiver routes, does not move very well, and although he checks down he usually has an automatic check down and does not truly "read" defense. He locks on almost every throw, not an exaggeration..... Flacco is a small school guy that we want to see do well and will value higher than scouts IMHO. Flacco has no, nada, zero mobility a big arm that is below average in accuracy, limited "touch", is a 2 year starter against questionable competition....his arm will get him drafted but I do not see much more than that. Matt Flynn is the guy that to me has the "it" factor....Boomer said it, this guy refuses to lose and STEPS UP with pressure where Ainge fades. He does not Ainge's or Flacco's size or arm, but he sees the field and has incredible awareness on the football field...I take Flynn much higher than he will probably be drafted. FWIW my QB ratings: Ryan Woodson Brennan Brohm (not hugely impressed with his arm) Flynn Booty Henne Dixon Paul Smith (yeah I know I am crazy, but project 20 lbs. on him and a bit better developed body???.....) Ainge Ben Mauk (if he does not get 6th year) Flacco J. Johnson (limited in actually seeing....need some DVD's if anyone can help)
On the bright side, at least Brennan still had the courage and the same eagernous to want to continue playing even when June Jones held him back in the 4th quarter. I don't know if that's just good conditioning but what we do know is that he wanted to continue playing not for the sake of his draft stock (if he cared so much about te oney, he would've left last year but he wanted to set an example for Hawai'i even after he leaves this year.
what makes u think that he isnt going to be good in the NFL he has a hell of arm when he gets more then 2 seconds to throw he makes those throws so y isnt he going be a good QB in the NFL i would love to have the guy on the dolphins
i wouldnt mind Woodson i would rather have him or Brennan but yea i agree some of them might fall to the second round
Actually I agree with this statement which is why I said that due to the difficulty of finding them they go higher. I also said that Ryan on talent alone is a top 30 talent, easily top ten and due to the importance and scarcity of the position will be drafted top five
I agree with your assessment of both Ainge and Flacco. I have said that Flacco is about as fast as a turtle. His system also has him throwing alot more dink and dunks then his arm would warrant. Obviously I havent seen much of him, one game lol but he'll get a long look due to his one of a kind arm. What kind of QB he's going to be is anyone's guess but the arm is special Three of the QBs I went into 2007 looking forward to watching were Ainge, Henne and Flynn. I wrote off all three earlier this season due to the poor play I kept seeing from them. Granted I didnt watch every single game but the ones I did didnt impress. I only mentioned Ainge moving up because I think him as well as Henne showed there A games in the bowl games. They go into the all star games and combines higher than they did before the bowl games IMO. Not a whole lot but some. I am willing to put Flynn back on my radar screen if he has a good bowl game. I think the Bowl games have some value to scouts and GMs in that there is something to be said i perfiorming well when you're on the national stage with the pressure that brings. I will always count a pressure game higher than a normal game.
Fair enough. "Will go" and "Should go" are two very different things. I fully expect Ryan to go top 10 because he's a QB, but talent wise I think he's top 25 at best.
