I'd be surprised if he doesn't get an interview due to the Rooney rule.

He'll likely get interviews, but there look to be a fairly small number of openings this year, and he hopefully/likely won't get a HC job.

And that's good news not only because we want him back in 2025 as our DC, but then if he were to be hired as a HC in 2026 or later, we'd get a comp draft pick in return, because he has to be here two years for that to happen.

Not to mention it would result in 4 different defensive coordinators in 4 years. 3 in 3 is bad enough.

With the talent we have on defense, if we could just maintain some freaking continuity.

I raked on the LB's most of the year, but the last few weeks they have played much better as a unit. Hoping they continue that trend.

On the LB front, David Long was cut by the Lions the other day - very telling, with all the injuries Detroit has had on the defensive side of the ball. Despite how well he played last season, he could have been part of the problem this year, either due to injury or attitude or ?.

I don't see him getting hired this quickly. Aaron Glenn is the guy you want if you want a first time defensive guy. Vrabel also getting a lot of interest already.

Glenn has dramatically improved the Lions run defense, from among the very worst before he got there and his first two seasons, to the very top this and last year. But they've been bad at pass defense all four years, including next to worst this season, and have succeeded largely based on big plays. That's often not sustainable, as we've seen with the Dolphins time and again. I also think that in watching them, they play a dangerous and sloppy style of football a lot of the time.

However, Xs and Os aren't the most important thing for a head coach, so he might have the traits you need to get the big job done. But you never know until it happens.

It's largely been a talent issue, he is doing a lot with little. He's also considered a strong leader type, and both him and Ben Johnson get a massive boost from being under Dan Campbell (who should be coach of the year). He got some nibbles last offseason. If teams want a defensive guy, he strikes me as the hot candidate. Flores is going to get some looks too. I just don't see more than 1-2 defensive guys getting hired.

That said, if Weaver does get hired I wouldn't be too concerned. Both Robert Saleh and Jeff Ulbrich will be available as replacements, and you'd get a comp pick for Weaver being promoted to head coach (though in next years draft I believe).

I think Weaver would need to be here at least two years to get a comp pick. I’m not 100% sure on that though.

You might need to offer big $$ to Saleh to keep him from going back to San Fran. The opportunity for payback vs. the Jests might be tempting, though.

Let’s hope weaver stays one more year in case McDaniel gets fired early he can then just step into being our head coach

Ross is many things, but a cheapskate isn't one. Saleh's DC Jeff Ulbrich and McDaniel also have history. That said, Weaver returning is my best guess.

He’s got interviews with the Bears and Saints so far.

The Bears job might look interesting based on having Williams in place and having some good pieces around him, but a comment from the guy running the team (George McCaskey) should worry any interested candidate:

The Saints are a mess - a job you take just to get your foot in the door, but one that could bury your career if you don’t pull a rabbit out of your hat.
