Just to avoid confusion.. I know now that the combined price of Wilkins and AVG is higher than that of Ogbah and Chubb..

My stance is that there was a window to sign both AVG and Wilkins and have them both signed for less than what Ogbah and Chubb make now.

If I remember correctly (feel free to chime in if I get the details wrong.) Wilkins expressed a desire for a new contract for an extended period of time.. He even stated that he was willing to accept a hometown discount. Wilkins stated that once a certain point had passed he would no long negotiate or accept a new deal from the Dolphins.

During this timeline of almost 2 years the market changed and the base price for a top DT reset.. (Much to the benefit of Wilkins on the open Market.) To make things interesting I went back and googled what the top DT's in football made in 2022... for reference: From what I could see the top contract on the market for 2022 was Deforest Buckner and he signed a 4 year 84 million dollar contract..($21 per) Considering that at that time Wilkins was willing to take less to stay a Dolphin long term I have to believe his number was under $20 million per. Not letting AVG hit the market means he gets less than 11 million per. We are paying Chubb and Ogbah 27 million this season.

So the math is tight.. but it works.

And even if I was wrong on the calculation and Wilkins and AVG did cost a couple million dollars extra... I would still rather have that combination and the first round draft pick.

The way this organisation throws away top picks sickens me.

The owner is a moron and tampers... costs us a first round pick
Chubb cost a first round pick
Ramsey cost a first round pick
We traded back up from 12 to 5... costing us a pick
Hill cost us a first and second round pick... (And then three more lower picks.)

Why does Grier keep throwing money at problems instead of investing in talent, and managing the cap? Overpaying for players other teams cannot afford? Then letting the talent that actually pans out from the draft to leave town?

Again, Wilkins was offered a top 10 contract from the Dolphins and turned it down. He never said nor implied that he’d give a hometown discount. He wanted the highest DT contract in the NFL. That’s what the Raiders paid him at the time.

It was a dumb move to not back up the truck for AVG. I’ve read a few conflicting reports, but if you look at AVG’s wife’s Twitter they bought a house before the legal tampering period. It looks like the Vikes tampered and he accepted their offer.

Ross did nothing that other owners don’t do.
Hill, Chubb, and Ramsey are all elite players.
    The cap is fine.
Players get paid a lot of money.
I don’t know what Wilkins and AVG leaving have to do with a 1st round pick.

Nearly all of your post is incorrect or doesn’t make sense.

Also.... the article you posted does not specify contract offers to Wilkins.. And note that the Dolphins still missed their window with him... He indicated well before that time.. He wanted to sign with the Dolphins and they passed... almost a year later the Dolphins made a lowball offer based on the salary market from the past..... They waited too long...

You were correct about one thing.... There came a time and date when Wilkins said: "Screw it, I will just become a free agent." It was after that time the Dolphins decided to offer him a contract... But again the market had reset and they were caught a day late and a dollar short.

That does not change my stance or the premise of it. There was an opportunity missed with Wilkins... He could still be a Dolphin and he would make much less than 27 or 28 million a season.

Yeah…yeah… I remember last season all the handwringing and they ended up being something like $80m UNDER the cap when all was said and done. The cap is fine.

You have to read the article.

    Here’s another.
    https://www.profootballrumors.com/2...he talks last year,more than $40MM guaranteed.

The Dolphins didn’t “pass” on Wilkins. They offered him a huge contract and he turned it down. This is just fact. And no matter how many times you disagree or say outlandish stuff, the facts are, the Dolphins offered Wilkins top 10 money and he refused. You’re just making stuff up. He never offered a “hometown discount”. Not even close. Wilkins is all about the money.

Because Grier knows he cant draft for **** so he prefers giving up those picks for established players.

Super bowl teams are built through the draft, but Grier sucks at drafting so he tried to take a shortcut. Of course it doesn’t work that way and here we are.

Lol, they had to let a lot of good players go to get under the cap, and this years team is worse than last year. Nobody was arguing we couldn't get under the cap, the argument was we were going to have a worse team as a result.

That brings to mind the best description of Grier's tenure as GM I can think of; could've, should've, would've, but didn't.

While I’ve been critical of Grier’s ability in drafting offensive linemen, to say Grier can’t draft for sh!t isn’t completely accurate.

He drafted Wilkins and he became such a beast, he demanded more salary than the Dolphins could afford.

He drafted Waddle…and we have him locked down

    He drafted Achane
    He drafted Wright
    He drafted Tua

To say Grier can’t draft isn’t fair. To say he can’t draft an offensive line to the detriment of the team? That’s MORE than fair.

Lies. They had the money, they just didn’t want to pay Hunt and Wilkins. I guess 2 people are “a lot “ in your book.

Grier is above average in the drafting category/ again, you’re just flat out wrong. You need a new schtick. It’s like dolphin25 and his inability to add and subtract or cite stats.

But in all fairness to the critics of Grier, me being one of them, his inability to draft an OL has outweighed any other success he’s had drafting other positions.

It’s been our Achilles Heel that we can’t get past.

Yeah, I had hoped that over the past 2 or so seasons that they’d get the OL up to speed. Last season, before the injuries, they were fine. Lack of depth is what’s killing them.

Armstead is certainly going to retire. AJ has shown that he can be a borderline pro bowler. Brewer is actually playing very well. Eich is a good back-up. They need to either get Wynn on the field or cut him loose. Is he dead or something? I’ve heard nary a word about him. If he can get healthy he’s definitely a keeper.

I’m hoping next draft, depending on where they pick, they go QB, OG, OG, OT, WR, TE… in that order. They may have 9-10 picks next season so I’d rather have some new blood drafting players. I also think the Dolphins scouting personnel need changes.

Fair enough, though with our record with him under center, and his nagging injury concerns it could be argued that no one should bring up Tua as a solid draft choice at this point. Wait and see what happens the rest of this year and next year with Tua. If the team goes on a tear and makes it past the wild card round I would be way more tempted to agree he belongs on your "good" list, but if not then he goes on the "naughty" list.

To say Grier can't draft is completely fair. Yes he has hit on a few, but taking into account the entirety of his drafting record and the amount of draft capital he had to work with, he's done a piss poor job, and not only in regards to the oline.

I praised him when he drafted Wilkins, but the impact players he has drafted are few and far between.

For Waddle he had to move up and give up a 1st round pick, and while Waddle is good he is not exactly a world beater or all pro.

Tua, are we really counting Tua as as good pick at this point when he is clearly not a franchise QB, cant stay healthy or win any big games, and we could have drafted Herbert or Love that year?

The only all pro Grier ever drafted was X his first year as GM. Overall he has way too many complete busts, washouts, underwhelming players, and few hits . Even when he did hit on a player, he left much better players on the board.

Overall I would give him a D grade as a drafter.

Now let’s get back to reality. I mean, you don’t even know what conference and division the Dolphins play in so I wouldn’t expect you to know the players Grier has drafted.

    Howard- All Pro
    Minkah- All Pro
    Tunsil- All Pro
Tua- top 5-8 QB’s in the league and back-to-back MVP candidate the last 2 seasons( has played in more games than Love. Herbert has a losing record- both of whom have had injury issues of their own but you love them for some reason)
Holland- having a down year, but still considered one of the NFL’s top safeties.
    Wilkins
    Hunt
    AVG
    Achane
    Waddle
    Wright
    JP
    Jackson
    Grant
    Brandon Jones

    and the list goes on

Grier’s biggest issue has been finding a HC.

You should hang out more on your team’s forums. Maybe you know more about them.

Stop being ridiculous and trying to make chicken salad out of chicken ****. That list is not impressive given the amount of pics Grier has had during his tenure.

Tunsil fell on Grier's lap, and neither Tunsil nor Minkah were actually All Pros with the Dolphins. I don't care what they went on to do with other teams, with the Dolphins they were not all pros. I'm talking about players who actually played like all pros with the Dolphins. Only X fits that bill.

Of the rest on the list, Wilkins, Hunt, AVG and Waddle have been good with us, and I praised Grier when he picked Wilkins and Hunt, but we just let 3 out of 4 of those good players go last year.

Achane and Wright have shown good flashes but neither of them have yet to put a whole season of good play together let alone multiple seasons.

Jackson played like dog crap his first three seasons before he turned into a decent RT in year 4. He was not worth that 1st round pick in 2020 when we left Justin Jefferson on the board to pick him.

JP has not been healthy enough to make a real impact for us which was the knock on him coming out of college.

Grant was not an impact player for us and we traded him away. Not sure why you would use him as an example. Same for Brandon Jones. He was good against the run but terrible in coverage and got injured too often, and we let him go last year.

    You are grasping at straws.

And regarding Tua, there is not a GM in the NFL who would not pull the trigger on a straight up trade for Herbert or Love in exchange for Tua right now.

Herbert and Love are true Franchise QBs, Tua is not.

Stop dending the indefendible. No, Grier’s only problem has not been picking bad HCs, Grier’s problem has been Chris Grier and his own incompetence in pissing away the rebuild and plethora of picks he had.

Except it’s not true. There’s that, of course.

The Dolphins were willing, and offered, to pay Wilkins. They ended up around $80m UNDER the cap. They didn’t want to pay Wilkins what the Raiders paid him. Same with Hunt. The Dolphins could have paid both that amount of money and still been way under the cap.
If they had, and Wilkins suffered a season ending (maybe career altering injury as he’s done in Las Vegas) the dullards would then been crying about how Grier signs “injury prone” players.
