I think the issue is the salary cap rather than the pay per player. Each NFL team makes the same amount of money. It’s all pooled together and split evenly sans parking and concessions profit. So this “small market teams can’t compete” is just not true. If you added up all of the player’s salaries they’d be only a fraction of what the NFL makes. Just the TV deals alone pays each team the amount of their salary cap. Add in corporate sponsorships etc and we’re talking over $1B more in revenue. I realize that there are other employees than the players, but there’s enough to go around. In 2022, each team made $375m in revenue. The NFL as a whole brought in over $18B in 2022. That’s up from $4B in 2001.

If this was Chris Grier saying this about a quarterback from another team, and the Dolphins were in need of a quarterback, you can best be assured he would be under investigation.

What’s it like living under a rock?

Actually, you’re probably living a pretty healthy life with minimal social media if you’re unaware of this girl right now so good on you!

Worth a quick YouTube just so you'll be up to speed when this meme breaks into Twitter. It's already in the sporting world - Bryce Harper had something on it over the weekend. Also - I'm sure there's at least a handful of Dolphin fans out there that have custom made "Hawk Tua" jerseys on the way...

It seems like more of a commentary on the state of the QB market as a whole in which case the NFLPA should probably be unhappy.

On NFL Live, Jeff Darlington said he’s scaling back slightly on some of his previous optimism over the Tua contract extension. “Right now, the Dolphins are not offering the contract that is the market value,” he said. “Based on my conversations, they are not in the Jared Goff and Trevor Lawrence ballpark.”

The market is not the market

Jordan Love will be the next QB to sign a contract extension. The Packers and J-Love's agents plan to get it all done before the start of training camp on July 22nd.

Russ Ball is the Packers contract guy. J-Love will get a very lucrative contract, but it will be structured in a very team friendly way. J-Love and the Packers both want that.

I am not sure when Tua will sign, but from what I am hearing, it is doubtful it will be before training camp. I am sure both sides want it done as soon as possible. The less distractions at camp the better.

Bigger contracts with better players take more time to negotiate. So Jay Luv ten getting a deal done before Tua makes sense. Jay Luv should command something in the mid 20 million dollar range in this QB market.

To be fair, in the interview you cited from Darlington, Darlington himself says that he thinks the Love deal will gets done before Tua's.

We're very close to entering the "f*ck around" phase of the F*ck Around and Find Out principle of business. This is eerily reminiscent of the headlines we saw about Christian Wilkins last offseason. If we don't see movement before training camp, I honestly think Tua walks next offseason as opposed to being tagged. To tag him would require us to pay him the average of the top 5 QBs in the league. That's going to be more in 2025 than it is in 2024 and if Grier (and Ross) thought extending him was a priority, we would have done it already.

Maybe Cleo Lemon or Josh Rosen are still available...

Yeah, everything I type is factual, but thanks for pointing out that it was very relevant to the topic at hand.

Darlington mentioned Goff money, and I can tell you that J-Love's contract will be north of what Trevor Lawrence got. Structured very differently, but it won't be for less than Lawrence's.

We shall see how Love's deal will play into Tua's negotiations with the Dolphins.

    Stay tuned....

I would worry just yet. Justin Herbert signed his contract on July 15th. Joe Burrow signed his contract in September. This is June.

Everyone needs to take a breath.

The only concern I can see is how much the ceiling keeps rising everytime another QB gets their deal done. The longer time goes on the more we'll need to pay Tua to keep him in Miami. Once he signs we can all sit back for the next few years and watch teams pay more than what Tua got and feel like we got a good deal. This isn't the housing market where you wait for prices to drop before buying. The arrow it pointing up indefinitely.

How so? The housing market will crash at some point. Do you ever see franchise QBs getting paid less over the next five years?

IMO, Herbert isn't the best example of what we're seeing because he signed his deal going into season #4, so getting him done before TC showed how much they valued locking him up. They could have put him off by exercising their 5th-year option, but everybody knew he was going to be around long-term. The concern I have is the fact that every other team has shown priority toward signing their guy.

As mentioned before, we played the same game with Wilkins and he wound up leaving. I suspect the wait is more because of terms than it is about money, but at some point, it's a risk to tell the guy leading your team that football is more about business than relationships and loyalty. After all, Tua has played well in spite of Ross trying twice to replace him. That alone would lead me to refuse taking a penny less than I believed was due.

We didn't play the same game. We didn't want to pay him the kind of contract he got. It was massive.

Don't you know that money doesn't really matter in the NFL? LOL

Not sure how the Dolphins can extend Tua today unless they slant the money into the extended years. They are likely not extending Hill because of what you suggest. Tua balls out this year and they need more money for next year to sign him.

Personally I'm fine with them playing him on the 5th year option and going into next year with franchise. Average of 5 highest is still cheaper then the highest.
