Back at the league meeting in March, Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel told reporters that Miami had made an offer to free-agent receiver Odell Beckham Jr. but noted “business takes time.” There has now been enough of it for both sides to get something done. Beckham has agreed to a one-year deal worth up to $8.25 million with the Dolphins, according to NFL Media. Also per the report, Beckham could have made more money elsewhere but he preferred the fit with the Dolphins. Beckham, 31, appeared in 14 games with six starts for Baltimore last season after missing all of 2022 due to a torn ACL suffered in Super Bowl LVI. He caught 35 passes for 565 yards with three touchdowns in the regular season. Beckham then had four catches for 34 yards in two postseason games. He’ll now have a chance to contribute alongside Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle in Miami’s explosive offense with quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. The No. 12 overall pick of the 2014 draft, Beckham has recorded 566 career receptions for 7,932 yards with 59 touchdowns in 110 games for the Giants, Browns, Rams, and Ravens.
Took less to come here. He will be a perfect compliment on the outside to the speedsters in the middle.
We have a lot of competition in the receiving room: Tyreek Hill Jaylen Waddle OBJ Braxton Berrios River Cracraft Malik Washington Tahj Washington Erik Ezukanma Braylon Sanders Anthony Schwartz Matthew Sexton We carried 8 over the course of last season. Hill, Waddle, OBJ, Berrios, and Cracraft are locks, IMO. Malik Washington will get poached off of the PS, so I think he gets a spot with a good preseason. I still hope Ezukanma can show some of the toughness that he displayed in college. I also think Tahj Washington has a very high ceiling, but a very low floor. Sanders, Schwartz, and Sexton have their job cut out for them. I fully expect us to bring in another decent vet to push the young guys for a job.
I was pretty staunchly against this, but for $3M plus incentives, this actually feels like a good move for us. $3M is not a big enough number that would prohibit us from cutting him if he becomes a locker room cancer, and I don't really mind paying him if he does perform at a high level. Moreover, I do think that in the event that Waddle or Tyreek gets hurt, OBJ is a viable starter. I think there is also a massive, massive takeaway from the last month of the Miami Dolphins. I really do think that I can deduce the front office conversations. I firmly believe that they felt like they had a Super Bowl winning roster that was lost due to injuries. I see them incorporating the engineering principal of redundancy. Achane and Mostert were playing hurt at the end of the season - fine bring in another RB just like them. EDGE guys were hurt - boom, add three more. All of our WRS are essentially the same guy. Although, I do think OBJ plays taller than his listed height, these guys are more undersized, speed guys. Finally, and I think that this is big, I do think that the acquisition of OBJ and Jonnu Smith is a signal that we want to reduce our reliance on Tyreek. I could see him getting more rest plays this season in order to have him fresher toward the end of the season. I think Grier and McDaniel do not want a repeat of last season.
Fills the need of the correct type of slot. Excellent at getting off the line and into his route Best route from start to finish is the slant Tua is the best slant thrower in the game, with his quick release and accuracy this route shoukd be schemed to open up. Odell housed a couple long ones where he split the defense up the middle last year. Odell has great great hands, this will be in conversions when he’s going up against the defenses #3 corner Like taking candy from a baby One year removed from major surgery so if he’s working out hard we should see a better version
Odell was an entitled douchebag no way of sugarcoating imo, I mean how long ago was the plane ride incident? The hope is he did some self reflection and rejected that version and is now in evolvement phase as a human and trying to become a good one in the process The game is there and he’s gonna help us a lot, the upgrade from a Cedric Wilson to Odell is tremendous
This is my only concern with him. To quote Spock, the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few…or the one. I don’t care how great he plays, if he becomes a cancerous distraction, he’s got to go. I just have to believe he knows and accepts what his role is going to be.
I think Beckham has matured over the years and by all accounts an amazing teammate. He's 31 now and looking for one more bag. I think he will be on his best behavior off the field. The rumor is he chose less money to sign with Miami over Kansas City and Buffalo. Have to love that.
This will take a bit of getting used to. As a Manchester City supporter, I hate the name Beckham, but as long as OBJ is a Dolphin, I will support him fully. The first time he came to my attention was when he made that incredible one-handed TD reception. I know that was a long time ago, but he is clearly a very talented guy, and if he can reproduce that sort of form, he will be a great addition to the receiving corps, and his experience could prove invaluable.
I'd be concerned if Miami had guaranteed him $8-10 million, but at a bargain rate of $3 million, it tells me he is humble enough to see what his true value is at this stage of his career. He wants a chance to win and to be able to contribute, and it won't ever be easier than as the #3 WR for the Dolphins.
I agree. Malik had a great season on a bad team where he was the defense's focus in every game. I think he has a heckuva shot to not just make the team, but contribute in a significant way. Of course, I had the same opinion of Ezukanma two years ago and he hasn't been able to stay healthy or find a role. The wideout competition is going to be fierce.

As long as the line holds and we don’t get bitten by the injury bug again, this is going to be a frightening offense. My questions though still lie on the other side of the ball. The AFC is offensively loaded. The defense has GOT to force more 3 and outs against these offensive powerhouses.
For sure, I think we need to make one big move for the defense once our money comes in June first I would spend that on need and impact Justin Simmons would be my choice That dude is just waiting for the right opp. He witnessed what we did to his team last year
Yea, we are a bit thin in the safety department but for me, we need a “Christian Wilkins”. To me, you win games dominating the LoS and in todays pass happy league, if you can control the LoS and cause disruption in the backfield, it sets the secondary up for success. Just my thoughts
Understood, I think the plan is to take the hit at that position, fill it wiith a platoon and allow Sieler to have more freedom to use his extraordinary athleticism.. Also being more stout at the linebacker position is part of that plan perhaps and playing two true inside backers in Long and Brooks. I don’t know what their philosophy will be for either spending to the cap or keeping some on the books for the season in case we need it. But, we have the money, we have the need, we’re ready to compete, and a huge upgrade is out there. Why not go for it?
Last season Butch took fringe “bust” players and unknowns and turned them into a pretty good unit. Injuries are what turned the tide there. Hopefully he can do the same this season. Wilkins will be missed, but he played every down and it didn’t seem to matter much. Blame it on Fangio’s antiquated ways and injuries, but I think Weaver has what he wants and needs in order to produce a solid D-line. As Deej mentioned, the LB’er core is solid, and IMO our secondary is better. Granted it’s a new DC and scheme, but they have a chance to be better than last year, and they need to be better. The offense should be fantastic as long as we don’t suffer the same amount of injuries as last season…and I doubt we do because last season has to be just a lot of bad luck. I’ve never seen the like in all of my 45 years of watching the NFL.
During his introductory press conference on Wednesday, Beckham noted that he’s just fine with not being the top option at receiver — in large part because that’s how his career has unfolded as of late. “You just all push each other,” Beckham said, via Joe Schad of the Palm Beach Post. “And for me at this place, my life, and my career, I haven’t been the No. 1 in a minute, you could go back and look at targets, you can go look at anything. That’s not really where I’ve been at. “So, just understanding your role and how can you be the very best at that role? How can you maximize those opportunities?” Beckham noted that head coach Mike McDaniel sold him on signing with Miami with a vision of how he could be utilized. “Watching the film, this reminds of a place I had a lot of success at, as far [as] the Giants,” Beckham said. “The timing. And all the things [McDaniel] preaches. We talked about football and it got me excited. … Coach was mentioning that on third down, they were getting a lot of doubling both of them [Hill and Waddle]. And there’s just a lot of room for opportunity.” As he enters his first year with the Dolphins, Beckham said he’s “at peace” and carrying less resentment than he used to earlier in his life. “I’m a competitor,” Beckham said. “Forget the middle part. You read a book. The start is going to capture us. You read the body of the story. And how’s it going to end? That’s where I’m at [in my career]. “Let’s have a great ending to this story.”
It is a distinct possibility. We let Howard go so he could test the free agency market but with Howard’s obvious decline the past season or 2, I doubt he’s going to garner the big payday he’s looking for. I can see X-Man coming back on a 1 year team friendly contract.
I would welcome him back, but pride is a terrible thing and I could see him taking less money elsewhere out of spite
I see your point but I think Howard loves playing here and would rather play with the team he has camaraderie with than having to build that report with another team. Howard didn’t want to leave but did understand the business decision behind it.
I think deep down he did, but he did say that he would never return to Miami. It was a couple months back and time does heal wounds…so maybe…I’ll keep my fingers crossed
First hell yes. I have always loved watching OBJ play. He is by far one of the most exciting receivers in rhe league to watch play. But, as much as I love.our receiving corps, and I do, I can't be the only one that feels we need to add someone that has a combo of good size and physicality with speed as a legitimate threat to both stretch the field, win the fight for jump balls, and pick up hard fought contested yards after the catch. His reach and vertical jump abilities could really help on deep passes where Tua's accuracy falters. Nothing hurts like seeing Tua put up a deep ball that floats a bit too much and having a tall DB out jump our receivers for it. As it so happens the '49ers just waived Terique Owens. It will be interesting to see if they sign him before the season starts. If not he could be a great low risk signing with possible big receiver rewards for our squad which while talented and dynamic is kind of undersized.
They’ve tried to get a few larger WR’s, but they’ve been injured or just weren’t grasping the offense or didn’t try. And this is the second time I’ve seen you criticize Tua’s deep balls. You do realize that he’s been tops in the league over the last two seasons on deep passes, right?
You guys are literally describing Eric Ezukanma, who has the size, physicality, and strength to get the extra yard, but also can't stay healthy. He has a chance to not just make the roster, but to carve out a roll for the team on Sundays, but once again, he's injured. That's too bad.
That is patently untrue. Tua's average yards in the air per pass last year was under 8 yards. That placed him at 17th in the league, so technically he was rated with highest yards in the air per pass of the lower half of league rankings. Second, stating a QB or any players strengths and weaknesses and calling him a good quarterback does not equate with bashing or criticizing him. It is stating the facts. Everybody in the league, fans, scouts, reporters have all known since he played at Alabama that the two big weaknesses in Tua as a prospect are his arm strength, and his proneness to injury. He's a good team leader, a very smart QB, he's accurate, he's got a good quick release, but his arm strength will never stretch the field in a considerable way.
I think we all realize that Tuas arm is not a field stretcher It’s more about the advanced skill set he does have in areas and how that ceiling could be raised because of it. Right now I think there might be some unprecedented areas that he’s working in. Speed of set up, speed of release, accuracy, all relative to the depth of target. I think if you add those up I’m not sure anyone has hit those numbers
1st to set it straight, as long as the guy is our QB I am in his corner. Hell, I like watching him play and his character enough that I would root for him even if he left and was signed somewhere else, just so long as that somewhere else isn't the Jets, Pat's, Bill's, Eagles, or Cowboys. i would love to see Tua flourish, and if we become a perennial playoff team, and make it to the big game a few times under his wing I will be one of the people shouting his name as a candidate for HOF status no matter what his yards in the air per pass are. In fact if he can do that despite his past injury issues and his lack of the deep bomb I would argue that would make such an accomplishment even more significant and a sign of his deserving to be named with the greats. i also feel that with better OL play we can be one of the fastest and most dangerous offensive threats in the league. These are all good things. If he can shore up his down the hard stretch play, which again will be dictated significantly by our OL play down that same stretch Tua could indeed make the leap from good to great. We'll see how this year goes, but believe me I am rooting for it to go great starting tonight when he is not even on the field. Let me be clear. I am not one of those fans who, like we saw in the end of the Tannehill years, will hope we tank just to increase our draft prospects to bring in Tua's replacement. As long as the man wears the teal I want him to excel and to win at a high level of competition.
