I'm so thankful we could make some easy moves to free up 70 million in cap space so we would not lose any of our good players and could sign a bunch other quality free agents....
Hefty start, would have liked to keep Wilkins, Hunt and AVG. Wilkins and Hunt got crazy money, good for them and I understand why we didn’t pay them that. AVG on the other hand I don’t get at all, if we’re paying Jones 7,5 $, I don’t see how you can’t pay AVG the 10 $. Let’s see how we look when the season starts and what Grier will do, but I don’t think we’ll be a more talented team next season then last.
Good thing we didn’t, seems hefty. But I guess those are the new prices one has to pay. Still don’t get why we didn’t resign AVG though.
The Dolphins lost a right guard, defensive tackle, a backup defensive end, and backup safety today. They're in shambles.
You lost your roster core on defense to FA and/or injury. They going to be dumb enough to extend Tua anyway to try to sell tickets to the mediocrity show?
Dolphins are officially under the cap, with the money from the Armstead restructure still pending. They have some room to play with now.
We lost one core player, Wilkins. I guess you can count Phillips/Chubb but both will play this year. You extend Tua because he has had a lot of success and the alternative is garbage. Something around 50 would be fine to me. Anything above 55 and things start to get a little messy to me.
It's possible, but also overly morose and pessimistic, especially prior to the bulk of free agency and the draft. Buffalo also losing a chunk of players, the Pats are starting over, the Jests ... bleh. Looking at who we lost, Wilkins is really the only DUDE on the way out. Everyone else is replaceable, even Hunt. And as good as Wilkins is, he's not Jones or Donald and he didn't get us over the hump.
I would be surprised if the Dolphins couldn't have signed either or both if they wanted. When they release the contracts see what their respective cap hits are this year. There is a clear philosophy at work here, and the Dolphins bargain shop the inside of both lines. They don't value those positions compared to tackle and end. Even top talent doesn't get top pay.
So who is rushing the passer next? No gink, wilkins,Chubb and who knows about Phillips.. We only had 3 good Ol last year. One is gone the other I'm sure to follow and Armstead is unreliable.
Who is the core on defense? Ramsey? Who else you got? You lost AVG and Wilkins who were two core guys on defense. AVG was especially needed with Phillips/Chubb not being able to start the year, and even when they do it make take them some time to ramp up. Who else is playing CB? LB? How do you intend on competing when you couldn't win one playoff game on Tua's rookie deal?
Still lost I see… Paying Wilkins and Hunt like a QB is your idea of being “cap smart”. My point still stands, the Dolphins had enough to pay Hunt, Wilkins, and AVG (the only real losses), but for what Wilkins and Hunt got giving them that is just stupid. Like your posts. AVG does sting. The only reason I can think of for why he wasn’t given $20m is either he doesn’t fit what Weaver wants to do or his injury was more serious than we’ve been told. He’s going to be 29 yrs old before the games start so maybe that played a factor too. One thing is a fact though, Wilkins and Hunt weren’t let go because of “cap space”. They were let go because they got outrageous money from other teams. BTW, have you learned how to use the sport stats sites yet? Do you still believe that Smith’s backups only had 4 receptions between th last season? lmao
Sieler, Ramsey and Holland, with Chubb and Phillips when they return. Let's see who they bring in during free agency and the draft as well. How will we compete? The same way every team in the league competes. Let's not pretend this is a roster with no talent anywhere incapable of doing anything. The offseason literally JUST started and people want to make grandiose statements of doom.
Holland and Sieler are pretty far from being core guys. Chubb and Phillips are coming back from major injuries. I don't think I'm pretending the roster is talentless. However, are you pretending they aren't a worst team next season with all this lost talent? How do you envision them running out as talented of a roster?
I'm going to have to significantly disagree with you Holland and Sieler. I do think you are underplaying the talent the roster has, but that's my opinion. I don't think on paper they will be much improved, but I also think the idea that we are going to be much worse is overplayed at the moment, especially since, again, it's literally day 1 of the offseason.
That’s part of the problem. Most here don’t understand how the cap, FA, trades, the draft, or anything else that happens in the offseason works. (That’s not a shot at you pump) They will sit here and cry and complain about things they just don’t understand. It’s a lack of foresight, critical and abstract thinking. They are “$50m over the cap” and don’t have the ability to understand how that will be rectified. Another problem is some of these people are just trolling. They’ll whine about the team and then cry when the team is changed. We don’t know what Weaver wants at edge or D-line. We don’t know what other players the Dolphins are in talks with. Some of us realize that paying BOTH Wilkins and Hunt over $50m AAV combined is just not smart. I, like most fans of the Dolphins, live Wilkins, but there is just no way that he’s been such a game changing DT to command nearly $30m a year.
It usually takes a year to comeback 100 percent from ACL and he got hurt in late December And Pbillips is coming off Achillies and u never know with that injury. Gink should have been resigned that should have been a no-brainer.As for Ramsey and Holland they are studs but when you have no pass rush u can't cover for ever. This will be a bottom feeder defence and if I'm wrong quote me in December. Grier needs to go.All those draft picks he had amounted to nothing. The Texans are farther along than we are at this point and that is pathetic.
You lost the highest rated player from PFF on defense in AVG in a position of MASSIVE need. You lost the core and the leader on defense in Wilkins. You need 2 starting DTs, starting corner, starting safety, two starting guards, starting inside LB, starting center and 2 starting edge players, and a few WRs. Much worse isn't overplayed. It's the reality with the cap and what you have in picks, and what you need.
Gink was also coming off a big injury, don't forget. That may have played a role, especially with the status of the others. We will bring in at least one, maybe more edge guys. Weaver is a rotation heavy guy for the line, I'd expect 3-4 guys at both edge and tackle. We will bring in bodies. Let's see who it all is before we make sweeping judgement, yeah? And the last part ... we see the complaint that Grier is a terrible drafter from the same folks who are angry we are losing ... guys that Grier drafted. He isn't getting fired this season. As for the Texans, good for them, they had a great year. Let's see if that's actually a sustainable thing they have going or if they come back to earth a bit.
Holland is a dog and Sieler had more sacks than Wilkins. They each had 23 QB hits and were nearly identical in tackles. Yet Sieler isn’t a core player and Wilkins decides whether the Dolphins win or lose.
Jordyn Brooks is a thumper and a tackling machine. Pretty clear the direction Weaver wants to go on defense. Great signing to replace Baker.
Owenu going back to New England on a 3 year 57 million deal. This guard market is nuts. At this point I'm in favor of just pencilling in either Fuatanu or JPJ in the draft and just being done with it lol.
