A new wrinkle in the still-evolving explanation as to why Vic Fangio and the Miami Dolphins broke up last week. Criticism from Dolphins players should be taken with a grain of salt, former NFL quarterback and longtime Fangio ally Ron Jaworski suggested on 94WIP radio Tuesday. Why? Because they were more interested in living the Miami lifestyle than putting in the work, per Jaworski.

Ron Jaworski on Miami Dolphins-Vic Fangio Split
In the hours and days after Fangio and the Dolphins announced their mutual decision to split last week, some of Fangio’s players in Miami took some shots at him.

Jevon Holland suggested he should kick rocks. Cam Smith said a lot with his “unlocked” emoji tweet.

And Dolphins receiver Tyreek Hill said the following:

“I’m not surprised he landed in Philly. People talk around the league behind closed doors. They was like, ‘Vic trying to get to Philly anyways.’

“I just want to say shoutout to Coach Vic for making a pit stop in Miami. I learned a lot from him, even though it was quick. He’s really a guru at defense. He’s just got to learn how to fit in with his players.”

Fangio has yet to comment publicly on the rift, but Jaworski, a friend of some four decades, didn’t bite his tongue during a Tuesday radio appearance.

“Coaches coach,” Jaworski said. “I have connections as well around this league and I hear another side of that story, that there were some players on that defense that didn’t want to work. Didn’t want to put the time in, didn’t want to put the effort in, didn’t want to make the commitment to be successful.

“Guys like to party at night and South Beach is really a great place to party. And Vic tried to get those guys and push those guys to become harder workers and better athletes, and more committed to their team. And he couldn’t get through to those guys. Those were the guys that Vic was pushing, and they’re the guys that are whining right now.”

Fangio wasn’t unemployed for long. The Eagles hired him as their new DC just days after his departure from Miami.

“You won’t find a better man, a football lifer, a guy dedicated to his profession, a great designed, not an ego that impacts anyone else,” Jaworski said.

ME - Let's see Holland was the glue that held the D together until his injury to both knees from a player sliding into him from the side. He wasn't working hard? And Tyreek isn't a hard worker? Maybe Cam fits that bill but the two others I just don't get how to connect 2+2 on that one as those were the 3 cited.

How would Ron Jaworski know anything? How would he know if some players didn't want to put in the work? What inside sources confirmed this?

This comes off as pure conjecture.

Jaworski, who is a big Eagles homer, is just sticking up for his buddy Fangio.

We all know his old school methods of communication don't sit right with players of today. When Jalen Ramsey, a future hall of famer, says put me on the best guy 1 on 1 and I guarantee I eliminate him, and Fangio waves him off, it's not gonna sit right with the players.

The "South Beach party atmosphere" is just an excuse for Fangio not getting along with his guys. Such a lazy, bullcrap shot by Jaworski.

I honestly think Miami isn't a football town anymore. Way too many distractions and I posted this years ago. Way too much to do, family wants to vacation / party on weekends / etc. Also the New NFL players are way less disciplined nowadays compared to old Shula players.

There's also reports that he didn't interact or take input from any of the other defensive coaches. It was his way or nothing.

Just someone sticking up for his pal. I said it a few times throughout the season but Fangio genuinely looked put out when he was wheeled out for his press conference. Short, terse, mostly 1 word answers nearly every week.

I can still remember my shock when he said one week that he hadn't watched film of last year's Dolphins and he hadn't watched film of the upcoming opponent. I can also remember his speech about how in San Fran he had "4 or 5 guys" on that defence, in Chicago "the cupboard was bare" and I thought he was insinuating that he thought the cupboard was bare in Miami.

We now have Omar saying that Fangio hated Cam Smith and would push Eli Apple out there instead although Apple was one of the guys out partying who "didn't want to work".

Just seems like a dysfunctional situation all round.

    So to summarize:

Didn’t watch last years’ team to learn strengths and weaknesses of his players.

    Played favorites with his players.

    Didn’t listen to his players.

Didn’t listen to other coaches and overrode or outright ignored them in meetings.

Never really wanted to be here and used us for the money when it looked like Philly was going to keep their DC last year.

Yeah, screw you, Fangio. Hope you and Sirianni sink like the Titanic next year.

One thing for everyone to keep in mind, we heard this about Flores as well...and Gase, Philbin, Sparano, etc. Every time, highly negative news was "leaked" a few days after the personnel moves. Part of this is NFL politics; you must control the narrative because you have a desk to fill and this has to look like a great destination to build your career.

Part of it is also pride and the macho side of the NFL- these are alpha males and they have to appear in control. The person departing can only say nice things- thanks for the opportunity, great organization, etc. Again, it's politics because they need another job. Bad-mouthing a team is career suicide and it's why nobody ever does it. Flores took a stand based on race and the optics were right for it then (Black Lives Matter). Good for him, he played chess while the league was playing checkers. But if Belichek tried that this week, the blowback in inner circles would be a disaster and he'd have to announce his retirement.

The real story for me here is not what's being reported- Fangio did this, did that. It's that once again, something didn't work out and the Dolphins are in PR attack mode with someone who can't fight back. Fangio's friend is also biased but there's probably a hint of truth there as well- would anyone be shocked that single millionaires in their 20's in Miami would want to go party? I've shared stories here before of the 90's, when I'd see Zach Thomas and other Fins drunk as skunks at the Davie Ale House or Baja Beach Club. It happens and it's not a condemnation...I was doing the same thing at that age and I wasn't a rich football star.

I guess what I'm trying to say here is "don't believe the hype." This is journalism and public relations 101, and most of it is being spun in an unfair way.

I'm not sure this is coming from the actual Dolphins Organization. It's a couple of players on X.

LMAO, his name was Zach and he married a Taylor, LOL. I'm only 50 and shouldn't be having these types of senior moments. I actually had to google his name because Zach Taylor felt 100% correct.

At least I remembered the Davie Ale House, that was the important part of the story! He was there several times with Jason Taylor...I think I'm trying to make excuses here, LOL.

Hehe, I remember seeing Junior Seau partying in Ft. Lauderdale. It was unbelievable how huge he was, when I saw him in person.

I’d agree if his own players weren’t bad mouthing him. And whenever there is one doing it publicly there’s no doubt a lot more doing it privately.

That’s not to say that Vic isn’t a coaching genius. It seems he has a bad personality and an ego problem that affects his players and that isn’t what being a good coach is about. You need to have your players buy in. Not by kissing azz, but by being a decent person that’s willing to understand that not everyone has the same personality and may need something different. We say this about players all the time… be selfless, it’s about the team, don’t be a diva, drop your ego at the door…but rarely hold coaches to the same standards.
