Phone Phanatic had an article speculating on options at qb for next year if Tua is no longer in the picture: https://phinphanatic.com/2022/12/28...mi-dolphins-have-to-replace-tagovailoa-in-23/ FWIW, I think we need someone more mobile than Brady or the OL will get them killed.
Another interesting article on QBs in 2023: https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/...gets-draft-prospects-projected-landing-spots/ Spoiler alert: They predict Brady will sign here on a one year, $35 million deal.
To answer the posters original question if I was asked this in November then noway I would ever think that possible.5 weeks later yea I could see it.
After seeing how some teams get around the cap (a prime example is the Saints last year), I no longer worry about such things, lol
Cut Byron Jones as a post June 1st. Resign Wilkins and Connor Williams. Restructure Tyreek and Chubbs deals to change the guaranteed salary next season to be signing bonus instead. Trade Cedric Wilson and Ogbah. That would probably give us $50M in space if we needed it.
Lets see if wilson has any trade value out there.. maybe dallas would take him back with the injuries theyve had on receiver and the success he had with dak
Either way, with Tua being an injury prone player at this point, you have to at least sign a viable backup option for him. I like the names on that list. The only name on that list that would come here to be a backup with the potential to start would be Mayfield. After that, I think any name on that list would come here to be a starter. That would mean that we are moving on from Tua in 23. A month ago the idea of moving on from him was insane to me, but not so much any more. We may need to do this because he's clearly not getting over the injuries. They keep happening, and concussions are no joke. I can see him being forced into early retirement over them. Whether you like him or not, it's just bad injury to keep sustaining and at some point, his health and life need to be the concern over him playing. I personally think we're done with him. We need to be at this point based off of health alone.
I think Ross is going to be all-in on Brady. You know he already went after him and got caught tampering. Now he'll be a FA, and he wants to be in Miami with his children. It's really a no brainer.
Tom Brady is 45 years old. He’ll be 46 before the season begins next year. Why in God’s name would anyone want to sign a quarterback THAT old? It’s not like he’s lighting it up like he used to…and with the Dolphins history of poor offensive line play, Brady would get killed here in Miami.
I'm two months younger than Brady. No way would I ever sign someone my age to play. There are head coaches a decade younger than us now!
I wouldn’t root for another team but I wouldn’t watch the Dolphins either. Probably watch Redzone all season instead.
I would take Brady in a heartbeat. We have a 23 year old who can't stay on the field vs a 45 year old who is ageless and never injured.
Brady’s numbers were down this year due to a shaky offensive line. Why would he want to come here, where the line has even more question marks? Plus, he’s only around for a year - then what? They’ll probably be good enough to finish around .500 again (or slightly better), which takes them out of the running to draft a top candidate the following year. This team has too many holes for a 46 year old Brady to fix.
Arians did Brady and that team dirty, retiring the way that he did. He left them absolutely no choice but to promote from within. I very much think it was a parting favor to Bowles and Leftwhich.
I was afraid of this option when I originally posted it - but now I almost welcome it; but just the Brady part not Sean Payton. Especially if there was a scenario where Brady was just a one year option and the team could put Tua on ice while he gets his head right literally and figuratively.
Tua is the QB in 2023 or he's done with the team for good, I think. You can't bench a QB in the last year of his rookie deal and then move forward with him after that.
You're probably right - but the concussion situation with Tua and how this season ended is not going to make for a typical last year of a rookie deal.
No. No. Tua is done in Miami. Sucks, but true ….or maybe they will start using those big, funky helmets with the padding outside: This all sucks
Those things were awful! Wasn't there a Bills player that used to rock one of those things? Running around the field looking like he was in the special olympics. I'd rather retire... Edit: Found it - Boy looks touched up...
The team has basically no cap room and few draft picks next season. There is no reasonable alternative. We have to hope that he's OK, and then if he isn't, then next year is a disaster, and we start over in 2024 when there are more resources. Pouring money or future draft picks into trying to get a new QB next season would only hurt the team down the road.
https://www.yahoo.com/news/espn-narrative-changes-suddenly-tagovailoa-174902558.html A good article about the Tua situation and I agree with most of it. It mentions both Jimmy Garoppolo and Brady as potential stop gaps. I wish I never penned this thread. All the disaster scenarios I outlined originally that could lead to Brady being here have mostly been realized or will soon be realized: Season hits another skid? Check! Early round playoff exit? Probably Check! No playoffs? No, but almost.
The irony is 23 years later, we’re still looking for our franchise QB and continue to make bad decisions with our approach. We had all the draft capital in the world to get it right and went with a small, injury prone QB. We then fired a HC who didn’t like that QB and forced the next HC to seal his fate with that same fragile QB. Grier and Ross are too stupid to get it right.
Problem is that coach who didn't like the QB wanted to draft the QB and then immediately replace him with a QB who looks washed and would be suspended and require all their capital. Not doing that and firing him is the only thing good Ross is ever done
And then then the coach cost us a number 1 draft pick! That's ****er is up there with Saban as most hated dolphin coach. At least to me.
I don’t know who to believe on that one. I’ve also heard that he wanted Herbert. Applying logic vs here say, why would a coach whose job is likely tied to one chance at a QB want that player and the very next year want to replace him. Or was it Grier saying this is our guy, you better get behind it or your job. Which is how most corporate/organizations operate. I don’t want to get into another debate about Flores. All I know is the 2 consistent variables to our failure is Ross and Grier. One can be fired, one cannot.
It HAD to be Grier that went with Tua. The selection has his name all over it. Again, I THOUGHT it would be Herbert, but I was open to Tua as long as his health wasn't going to be an issue. At the time it was the hip that scares me. Oh well, I'll continue to support this franchise no matter what.
You can continue to support the franchise while not liking a single person involved with it at any given moment. That's certainly been me on various occasions.
I heard Flores wanted Love back then and I don’t think he really was on board with Tua. But who cares Flores is gone and I think it’s a good thing, cause he didn’t get the offense right and had coordinators that shouldn’t have been in the roles they had when they were here. Hopefully McDaniel gets his **** together, he seems to be really good offensive mind, if he gets Fangio for the D and a good special teams coach, then I think we might be set up pretty good when it comes to coaching.
I really feel like Flores wanted to try to live and die on big plays on both sides of the ball, instead of actually trying to create a sound, reliable foundation of a system. Sacks and turnovers on defense at the expense of giving away huge amounts of yardage and losing the time of possession battle every week, and then a run around, playground style QB who makes plays with his legs and hits deep passes downfield, instead of building a solid OL, running the ball in a traditional manner, and focusing on moving the chains with the passing game. Basically like a 12 year old playing Madden.
Let’s not forget what he did with the rest of that first round, which was….what’s worse than an epic fail? He could have paired Tua with Jefferson and Tee Higgins (imagine that), or added Swift, Taylor or Dobbins to the backfield or added Treyvon Diggs to the secondary. Instead, he takes a project tackle (nice story, but c’mon) who should have been a fifth rounder and then an athlete with little cb experience who should have been a sixth or seventh rounder (at best). Nobody hits on every pick, but Jefferson and Taylor were college stars that were there for the taking and would have transformed the franchise. Look what Taylor has done with dreck at qb and how Jefferson makes Cousins look like a stud.
