We just traded for RB Jeff Wilson to fill the vacancy with chase Edmonds departure. Looks like we gave up a 2023 fifth rounder. Wilson has 486 yards and two TD this year. Will be out #2
He knows our offense, he's having a solid year, and he fits our speed mentality. Simply no downside in this move and he should be an immediate contributor. The only reason he shook loose was the big trade with Carolina for Christian McCaffrey...Wilson was previously the starter. This was a steal at this point in the season, and combine that with getting rid of Edmonds- great moves today.
Really he was the backup thrust into the starting role due to the injury to Elijah Mitchell back in week 1. I wouldn't be surprised to see a healthy split between him and Mostert, either riding a hot hand or splitting duties fairly evenly.
A lot of folks don’t understand just how important that is. When you average over 5 yards per carry that often puts you in 2nd and short…which really opens up your playbook. Not to mention being able to grind out the clock and secure the win
Which Miami hasn’t been able to do in forever. The inability to do that is why Marino never got a ring, IMO.
I love it. Running backs in outside zone schemes have to have patience, good vision, and quickness to wait for the hole to develop and then shoot through it. Most backs don't have the attributes necessary for it, but Mostert and Wilson do. Look at video of Atlanta's Super Bowl run where Tevin Campbell and DeVonta Freeman were in Shanahan's offense to see what I mean. Then, look at the next year's film and see what happens when they were put into a more traditional scheme with different blocking concepts. Edmonds was a bad fit; Wilson is the opposite of that.
Wilson is a great get. Hard working, no non-sense type of player. Went from being a UDFA on the PS to carving out a role for himself in Shanny's rotation in his second year with the team back in 2020. With Elijah Mitchell coming back off IR soon and the trade for CMC, there just wasn't going to be much opportunity for Wilson going forward. But he's a underated back and should hit the ground running (pun intended) in McDaniels scheme.
Wilson Jr had a lot of juice in the run game yesterday. Showed some quality hands and agility along the sideline on that receiving touchdown too. Already played an almost even split with Mostert. Great game.
