I think he sacked him like 3 or 4 times in the game the Jags beat the Bills last year.

ESPN have Chubb as 3rd in the league this year at pass rush win rate. I’m expecting he will be seeing the double teams now so it’s time for Phillips to step up.

Phillips is actually playing well this year but is getting double teamed a lot. I’m expecting him to get to the QB more often now.

Chubb is only 26 and Phillips is 23. This is exciting for the defence.

And it was amusing EACH AND EVERY TIME. Chubb should make it easier for both Ogbah and Phillips though, which could really boost the pass defense. The defense will not depend on having two dominant CBs, but it would be nice to have them....

Do we know when Byron Jones will be back? This defense could be downright scary with the addition of Chubb, both our corners finally healthy hopefully creating more opportunities for Ogbah and Phillips.

It's getting to the point where I don't think Jones plays at all this season.

This is still the biggest question. After thinking about it I do think getting a premiere pass rusher over a corner helps a defense more. Any corner will break down over time if no pressure is applied so I think this was probably the best possible move we could make. However, we are still weak on the backend so this won’t fix everything. If Byron comes back we are a capable deep run playoff team imo, but an early exit if not.

Whatever the story is, it’s worse than expected. He had surgery and was expected back by the beginning of the season. Then he wasn’t ready, so they put him on IR, expecting him to play week 5. He’s been off IR for four weeks, but has been inactive all that time. No word on progress, timeframes or anything - the only time his name comes up is when reporters ask McDaniel about him, and he gives a noncommittal answer and moves on.

I think whats crazy to me is that the broncos mindset is, they just gave up a ton of money to Wilson and are not able to sign their best defensive player to a deal as well because of it…

considering what theyre getting in return for their investment in Wilson, if im a broncos fan im crying in a corner.. yall got four more years of that mess.. and the likelihood that the late first rounder they got in return will ever turn out as good as chubb is very low..

Phillips might not be showing the numbers but he is actually playing very well. The one that is not is Ogbah and you have to wonder how much his back injury is affecting his play.

Really is looking this way. His absence has effected the entire defense this season.
He must be the SLOWEST healer in the NFL.

I found this from two days ago in the Herald-

“Same story, nothing’s changed,” McDaniel said Monday.

Jones has yet to return to practice after undergoing offseason surgery on his lower leg. He was initially expected to return for training camp but now will have missed the first half of the 2022 season. “He’s not progressing as fast as we hoped from the spring,” McDaniel said in early October.

“There hasn’t been a major setback. I won’t put a dude on the field [until there’s] stability. We’ll keep addressing it. It hasn’t had to do with a major setback. That could change any time, day by day, week by week.”

The thing is, No team in the league is giving up a top 20 Cornerback, let alone a premier one. The best thing we could have done is improve the pass rush and that will help those guys on the backend. If, by the grace of God, Jones finally makes it back on the field before the end of the season this defense will be really nasty!

The whole reason to get him is hopefully they can stop using Cover Zero to get pressure.

Does anyone know exactly what he had surgery for? All I've heard is that it was one his achilles but that doesn't really say much. Never heard that he tore it.

General Manager Chris Grier told reporters in his press conference on Wednesday that trade talks between he and Denver G.M. George Paton started to really heat up once the Broncos got back from London. But the conversations began a few weeks ago. “We’re always looking for opportunities to upgrade the roster and do things that would benefit us not just today, but long-term as well,” Grier said. “He’s a 26-year-old player at a premium position. He’s a very good football player.”

From the long-term standpoint, Chubb is currently on the final year of his rookie contract. But the Dolphins certainly don’t view Chubb as a rental. “When you do a deal like that for a player, you always would like to — from our perspective, when we do business — we would like to have something done,” Grier said. “And we anticipate having something finished up here shortly.”

Chubb has recorded 5.5 sacks, four tackles for loss, eight quarterback hits, and a pair of forced fumbles this season. He has 26.0 career sacks in 49 games since being selected with the fifth overall pick in the 2018 draft.

This is from ESPN back on August 20:

As for Jones' return, McDaniel said the Dolphins are "very hopeful" he will be ready for their season opener against the Patriots. He's yet to practice since undergoing surgery on his left Achilles tendon in March, although a source told ESPN at the time that he was expected to be ready for training camp. McDaniel said Jones is "exactly where we thought he'd be at this point" and is starting to incorporate some change-of-direction drills into his rehab.

McDaniel didn't put a timeline on how long Jones will need before he's ready to play but did say the eight-year veteran's experience shortens his ramp-up period

Something doesn’t add up - if he was doing change of direction drills in August, how is he not ready to play two months later?

The whole thing seems vague. It says "surgery on his left Achilles Tendon" but really doesn't say what the heck was done. If he tore the thing they wouldn't have been expecting him back during camp - he would have been straight up out for the year. Clearly it wasn't for a tear. It is all very strange.

I had a really bad ankle sprain in my teens and it took me like 7 months before I could do anything. After 3-4 weeks of zero running, playing, etc. it would feel fine. Then I'd take a quick step or two and before I knew it, I'd be on the ground in agony like the injury just happened. So I stayed off it for two months, finally tested it and bam, I'm on the ground again. This went on and on and on.

This situation could be that simple- it's not fully healing or easily gets re-aggravated. That would explain the day to day prognosis for several months now.

At this point, that’s the only logical explanation. Maybe it’s just the vague answers from the team that are making this seem more mysterious than it is. Either way, the absence of a strong second corner, especially in combination with Howard’s injury, have really hindered this defense. Here’s hoping Chubb can ratchet up the pressure on opposing QBs and take the heat off the secondary.

Looking at over the cap https://overthecap.com/player/byron-jones/3875 his dead money hit is horrific next year if you cut him before June 1st. You only save $4M against the cap before June 1 but $14M if you designate him an after June 1 while push $10M into the following year.

It's costly to get rid of him next season. If he can contribute at all I think he'll stay.
