The Miami Dolphins brought in some big-name players in the offseason, and they reportedly are looking to land another one before the NFL trading deadline. The Dolphins were one of two teams, along with the New York Jets, mentioned by name in longtime NFL writer Peter King's weekly Monday morning column as being interested in making a deal for Denver Broncos edge defender Bradley Chubb. Interested enough to part with a first-round pick. "A well-plugged-in GM told me over the weekend the Jets and Dolphins are interested, and interested enough to consider dealing a first-rounder for Chubb. But to make that deal for a significant price, Miami or New York, or any team, would have to have a deal done with Chubb beyond this year." That was the paragraph in King's column, which illustrates both why the Broncos would be willing to part with a proven pass rusher and why a team would be hesitant to pay a big price for him. A first-round pick in the 2018 NFL draft, Chubb is making $12.7 million in 2022 playing on the fifth-year option and is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent next spring. That's why any team giving up a significant return would want to have Chubb signed beyond next season. Another franchise tag for Chubb in 2023 always is an option, but then that would potentially make Chubb a year-and-a-half rental instead of a half-year rental. WHY CHUBB WOULD BE A GREAT ADDITION FOR THE DOLPHINS The appeal with Chubb is obvious: The guy can rush the passer. Chubb has 5.5 sacks in eight games for the Broncos this season, including two in the opener against the Seattle Seahawks and 2.5 in the Thursday night home loss against the Indianapolis Colts. Before that, Chubb had 12 sacks in 16 games as a rookie in 2018 and 7.5 sacks in 14 games in 2020 when he was selected to the Pro Bowl for the first — and only so far — time. And the Dolphins right now clearly could use an elite pass rusher. Through eight games, Miami has only 15 sacks, on pace for 32, a clear drop from the 47 they recorded last year. To be sure, the absence all season of cornerback Byron Jones has hindered the team's ability to blitz as much as usual, but there's also not been anybody stepping up to provide consistent pressure on the passer. Emmanuel Ogbah, who had nine sacks each of the past two seasons, has only two sacks so far in 2022 and he's coming back now from a back injury. The team leader in sacks is second-year linebacker Jaelan Phillips, but with only three. Veteran Melvin Ingram, signed late in the offseason, was named AFC Defensive Player of the Month for September, but that was more for his two fumble recoveries than his sacks — like Ogbah, he's got only two sacks on the season. Ingram also played a season-low 16 snaps against Detroit on Sunday. Adding Chubb no doubt would bring an added element to the defense. THE DOWN SIDE OF A POTENTIAL CHUBB TRADE As stated before, there's a reason the Broncos are even entertaining offers for Chubb. While it's clearly about his contract status, that contract status — and the accompanying upcoming negotiations — is made trickier by his injury history. In reeling off his career sack stats, notice we left out the 2019 and 2021 seasons, and that's because Chubb played only 11 of a possible 33 games those two years. He missed the final 12 games of the 2019 after sustaining a torn ACL in his left knee and had surgery on his left ankle in 2021. So there will be a risk factor involved for any team willing to include a lot of guaranteed money in his next contract. Or maybe a team takes the short view, trades for him and tags him again next summer. And maybe that team ends up being the Dolphins if they decide they're a stud pass rusher away from being able to compete with the Bills and Chiefs in the AFC. To be sure, a first-round pick in a trade for a midseason rental would be an awfully steep price, so one would think if the Dolphins are willing to part with that No. 1 pick from the 49ers — which certainly looks like it could end up in the bottom third with San Francisco clearly looking like a playoff team — they would like to have a long-term deal in place. If that materializes, it no doubt would be a bold move for the Dolphins. But they also have shown this year they're not afraid to be bold.
Bradley wasn't the first Chubb I thought of, but he makes sense if we can find the cap room for an extension. I don't see any way to shell a high pick for a rental, he would have to be extended.
He could be a solid piece of a SB run if we can agree to terms. There are downsides (as mentioned in the article), but we're basically getting a stud in the prime of his life. I would personally roll the dice if it's a multi-year contract.
Love him as a player but I would think we would better targeting a corner if Bryon Jones isn't coming back.
I make this move all day every day. Pass rush is a primo position, and we are probably drafting late in the first round. Grier is so hit or miss on his draft picks. Yeah, we might get Jevon Holland, but we might also get Noah I. Solid pass rush makes our entire defense better. All of this clearly would be contingent on him signing a long term deal.
I think If we can improve our pass rush it will help the guys on the backend. If we can make the money work and sign him to a long term deal I think they should pull the trigger. It's a darn shame Ross and his bungling cost us a 1st round pick next year. This would be a real no brainer.
While I agree with everything you said, I'll play devil's advocate for a moment and say that there's tremendous value at the end of the 1st round. It seems like there's always a top 10-15 player that slides. Plus, Ross might pursue Brady again now that he's back at work. I'd rather get rid of that pick before the actual draft, LOL, to make sure we actually get a player for it.
My concern is that we're not exactly flush with cap space for next season and there's still a decent number of deals that need to be done concerning our current players before adding in any extras.
Well...Since we suck at drafting I say why the heck not? Bradley Chubb is a hell of a talent and he's still a young ascending player.
Schefter just said on MNF halftime show that the Broncos have an offer on the table for Chubb that includes a first round pick…
I'd be way more interested if it was for a second and a fourth. That first rounder needs to be for OL or maybe a CB. I think the Broncos are bluffing about having an offer that includes a first rounder, or they'd have taken it by now.
It’s not like Chris Grier is good at drafting, which is why we have to trade for a pass rusher in the first place. I wouldn’t be too upset if it’s a 2024.
Any other names being floated out there besides Chubbs? While he is in his prime, his injury history is a little worrisome, not to mention what he’ll cost to extend. There’s no doubt that the pass rush is an area of concern, so hopefully there actually is help on the way.
Happy with this trade. We need help at CB (though Byron Jones someday coming back will help) and at DE. Anything to improve pass defense. And we got rid of dead weight with Edmunds.
The package the Dolphins are giving up will be the 49ers’ 2023 first-round draft pick, the Broncos’ 2024 fourth-round pick and running back Chase Edmonds for Chubb and the Broncos’ 2025 fifth-round pick, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN. The Dolphins have the 49ers’ first-round pick next year because the 49ers traded up with them to draft Trey Lance in 2021.
Agreed, with the assumption we can extend him. Got a high level pass rusher which would have been my target in rd1 anyway, and dumped the Edmubds salary with what is essentially a minor pick swap for the future as well. This trade structure makes me wonder if we are done though. I can see a trade for a RB coming.
They wouldn’t have had to do this if Phillips and Ogbah weren’t sucking it up this year. I though pass rush would have been a strength this year. Oh well.
