I think it will depend a lot on practice. I get the feeling that McDaniel is the sort of HC who will go with the player who gives him the beat chance of winning, regardless of pay, draft position or tenure. If Teddy plays like he did against Cinci, then I can see the hook come out and putting in Thompson.
My thoughts exactly. This thread is a complete over reaction at this point, not that I'm surprised as we seem to love our backup QB's around here. We're talking about a kid that "lit it up" in preseason garbage time against other players likely not even in the league at this point. I do think there is upside and potential there, but sitting at 3-1 this is not the time to be exploring that.
As much as I like Tua if he comes back and gets another concussion this season then he needs to seriously think about retiring imho. What he needs to learn to do is throw the damn ball away and live to fight another day. I think his play this season has proven that he can the QB for the future but he now needs to keep himself healthy. Stop trying to stretch every play to the limit and stop taking unnecessary hits. As for Skylar I still don't see him getting a shot unless Teddy gets injured or throws 4 picks in the first half against the Jets.
I think he should absolutely get a shot. Let him start. It won't happen, but it should. See, imo, I think the 2020 was such a colossal failure by Grier. I mentioned during the draft and ever since that mistakes like those can set a franchise back for many years and all we can do now is hope we somehow get real lucky along the way. So, give it shot wit Skylar. We have nothing to lose and maybe he becomes are Tom Brady/Kurt Warner, etc type of story. Hahaha. I highly doubt it, but as I said, at this point, that's all for which we can hope. San Fran is looking good, so...
If he were 21 with a good college career, then I'd be excited about his potential. Even if he was still a 7th rounder. But he's 25 and had few memorable games as a passer while in school. (somehow, he turned 20 before his true freshman year of college, and it seems that he turned 18 before his junior year of HS, which is really odd). Despite being a rookie, Thompson is older than 21 players on the Dolphins 53 man roster, including being a year and a half older than Tua. I think that the upside is probably pretty minimal, unless someone is hoping for a Kurt Warner type of come out of nowhere career from him.
I'm not counting his age as negative on him. Sure, he's four years older than the average rookie. Sure, he doesn't have outstanding high school and college tape. But Skylar was expected to be the 1st undrafted rookie off the board and numerous teams were planning to extend an offer. So there's something there anyway, some potential to be an NFL quarterback. Personally, I'm glad we grabbed him and I'm glad he showed out in preseason. As the detractors say, preseason means nothing. But I'll counter that by saying he led the league preseason. If he was dead last in QB rating, then folks would say it meant something (including myself). He's a solid prospect- no more or no less. I'd advise everyone not to buy into the hype and not to discount him either. We'll eventually see him in live action and that will do all the talking.
To clarify; by upside I meant as a backup. Not a future QB1. Your point here is exactly why I think that. Now isn't the time to experiment with him when you know you've got Bridgewater. My hope is his rust against Cincy will shake off with a full extended week of practice as QB1 and a gameplan built around him. At 3-1 it's not time to experiment with a 25 year old 7th round pick as your starter just because he played decent in garbage time of the preseason.
You mean 8th INT? Unlike many of you, I have ZERO confidence in Bridgewater. Hope he proves me wrong, I really do but with what I’ve seen from him this season, it’s no surprise to me he’s on his what (?) 4th different team in his career.
I don't think expecting your third string QB to hang 40+ points on an opponent in his first NFL game is anywhere close to a reasonable expectation.
Thank you. Not only did he play poorly, his physical gifts looked really weak, and he seemed incapable of getting the snap off on time far too often. How much of that was on the coaches, I don't know, but Thompson didn't look like someone who needs more time and he'll be a great asset, even as a backup. He might end up being our backup QB in 2023 due to cap concerns and his famialarity with McDaniel, but I will dread seeing him on the field again.
While I don't think anyone should be hard on him they scored most of those points off short field. It was 19-17 in the 4th so he obviously didn't need to score 40.
He lacks all of the physical tools and he looked very uncomfortable in the huddle. Despite all that, he played as well as he could. Without a Conner drop and Sanders missed field goal he probably has the lead in the 4th quarter thanks to some questionable play calling by the Jets.
A really disappointing debut by Thompson, but before all of you start with the whole, "I told you so" please be a bit logical and consider... Last week's loss to the Bengals...SHORT week and Bridgewater likely go little to no reps with the first team during what few practices the Dolphins had. Tagovailoa goes down, in comes Bridgewater with little preparation. Now because is his experience, he played ok. Nothing worth writing home about and made the mistakes you come to expect from Bridgewater. 10 days between the Bengals and Jets game. Bridgewater is the starter. Get him all the reps he needs with the first team. Thompson elevated to back-up. Bridgewater getting all of the snaps with the first team...Thompson getting very few. Jets game...first play from scrimmage and what does Terrible Teddy do? Yep, moved slower than pond scum, didn't feel the heat until it was too late, throws an intentional grounding and gets planted and injured yet again. In comes rookie quarterback Thompson who went from 3rd string to starter in 10 days, without the benefit of first team reps because Teddy needed those. Is anyone surprised that a rookie gets his *** handed to him his first game?
apparently alot of people should be. Hell, there were calls around here for this guy to start even before the tua injury if I’m not mistaken. It’s a ridiculous idea even if he had a full week of preparation
We now see the difference between the preseason and the regular season. I thought he played about as well as you could expect a 3rd stringer to play in that situation. But when you’re relying on a 3rd stringer to win the game for you, you’re already screwed.
7th round pick? For all the flack Tua gets for not having a cannon arm, Thompson's throws had even less juice behind them. Definitely not an ideal situation for him, but he did keep us alive. Thing is, we aren't going to win a single game without Tua. I can't pile on Thompson, he's nowhere near ready. It's really that simple. No Tua...no Ws.
Great... way to miss the point Res. Nobody is expecting him to put up 40 in that situation, but it was quite clear he's not the guy people think he was based off of garbage time in the preseason against a bunch of JAG's that likely aren't even in the league now. It wasn't reasonable to think he deserved a shot either... but uh... here we are.
Obviously the people that were expecting Dan Marino were way off on their expectations. I realize that players are supposed to be ready at the drop of a hat, but he did not prepare as a starter this past week. Bridgewater was and did prepare as the starter. Even though injuries do happen, I highly doubt Thompson was ready to be thrown into the fire. I don't think a player really ever is. Now...If by some horrific chance he HAS to start next week against the Vikings, I do expect him to be better prepared and ready to go. I think we'll see a different showing from him if he does in fact have to take the start. It's a lot to ask of a 7th round pick, but obviously the team along with quite a few of us have seen something in him that suggests that he can cut it in this league. If we have to move forward with him, then so be it. Yes...It was a bit ridiculous of people to suggest that he just outright takes Tua's job from him. Based off our track record, we don't really win at all when Tua doesn't play. That alone suggests the importance of Tua to this team. It should also squash all arguments about us being better with Bridgewater, Thompson, Fitzpatrick, or any other cast off quarterback that we could sign.
I mean, the team screwed him out of what, another 10 points? His play was good enough for them to have had 27 points. I think that's pretty damn good from a third string QB with less than a week to prepare and play with the starters, in a divisional dogfight.
im all about drafting a quarterback next year. And it doesnt have to be a first round pick.. if Devin Leary, Will Levis or Jordan Travis is there in the second or third.. im all about bringing in a talented arm here. Tua will still be the starter but the competition needs to continue. I dont imagine these quarterbacs will be first rounders, but their talent isnt thatfar off from cj or bryce young who will both go 1 and 2 in the draft. Two of them will definitely be there and we should grab one
I agree, they will look at the second tier guys in the 2nd or 3rd round. There's just some guys you see play and say, there is no way he can play in this league. We saw that on the other side last year with Book. We saw it today with Thompson. Spend a 7th round pick on an offensive lineman you can develop.
What we do in the draft next April depends mostly on Tua. First his health, and then how he plays the rest of this year. Whether you love him or not, he has a cap number of nearly 10m next year and can't be cut. I think think that the most likely scenario is that Tua plays mostly OK the rest of this season once he's cleared, and if he's healthy most of the way, he goes into 2023 as the undisputed starter. In that case, you don't spend a high draft pick on a player who won't contribute to a team to hopes to make the playoffs when they have tight cap space. We'll need those picks to play right away and make a difference. And than Tua's play in 2023 determines whether or not they look to replace him in 2024, when his contract is up. If Tua can't play at a solid level due to his injuries, or if he just goes out and stinks even though he's healthy, then anything is on the table.
His deep throws and outs floated yet he was throwing bullets at receivers 5 yards over the middle. The one were he bounced it off Edmonds helmet was a rocket and he also threw the most horrible spiral that the TE dropped (think it was Conner) that would have been good for a first down as well. We did get 3 PI penalties on 3 underthrown deep balls as our WR had to come back after beating the CB's, that was about the highlights of his debut. Also Chase Edmonds should never be sent out on a pass catching route again until he's done at least 10 hours on a Jugs machine. Man has hands of stone.
I agree. It's a lot ot ask of a kid that just got promoted with no experience at this level. The defense is going to have to step up until Tua is cleared. To be honest, I'm not sure what happened in the 4th quarter but I guess it was just one of those days. These guys are pros and learn from the whoopin' and move on.
I’m fine with it. Skylar looked like a rookie. We needed to see what we got because TUA isn’t the long term answer I’m afraid he’s 1 hit from career ending damage. Teddy is an unemotional block of cheese. Skylar look decent he didn’t get the reps in practice etc, and as I predicted we tried to turn the game into a run offense. I’d still give him a shot next week if tua isn’t back.
Aren't all QB's technically one hit away from career ending damage? Tua has to do a better job of protecting himself by throwing it away instead of standing in there until the very last split second. I'll be amazed if Tua or Teddy aren't ready to go this week. If the OL plays the same was as against the Jets then it doesn't really matter who is under centre if they are getting pressured on nearly 50% of their drop backs.
I disagree completely. A few of his early passes were dropped because he fired a cannon at the receiver. The kid does have an arm. With that said, I saw the pick in the flats before he even released the ball. He made several "rookie throws" that only gets etched out with experience at the NFL level. As others said, he had zero days to prepare. For someone like Fitzpatrick or Matt Moore, that's no big deal. For a rookie who's never taken a snap in the NFL- that's a massive deal. The kid did what he could and simply came up short due to inexperience. Do I want him starting next week? If Tua and Teddy aren't ready, then it's a foregone conclusion. But if either QB is ready to go and gets a week of practice in, then I'd say that's a foregone conclusion as well- you start your starter. The question comes in if Tua or Teddy doesn't clear until like Thursday or Friday...that would mean Skylar got most of the practice snaps for the week and now you have a starter coming off injury raw. I could see that one going either way- maybe start Skylar, but bring in Tua/Teddy at the first sign of adversity. Then again, Skylar doesn't know the full playbook...maybe he doesn't belong out there no matter what at this point. But the last thing I want to see is the team rush Tua or Teddy back and see them getting knocked out for the season. We need Tua 100% healthy to compete for the division.
Well he got his shot. He took too long getting the offense out of the huddle and lined up. He took too long to process the field in the pocket and get the ball out. He underthrew the long ball and threw the short passes with too much steam/no touch. His arm looked weak. He could not spin a spiral. His Speed and athleticism is lacking. He is not capable of out running an NFL end or OLB to the outside boundary. That is a fair evaluation. This is not the try league. This is the NFL, you either can play at this level or you can’t. I personally don’t care how old you are, you’re experience level or your back story. He should be released at some time today. So we can start to prepare Sinnett for his shot. (Or some Street QB). If they want to put him on the practice squad… I wouldn’t complain. But you can’t trot him back out on an NFL field next week (even as backup) if you are running a serious operation.
Now that the terrible idea of starting him over Bridgewater is in the past do we really need to come up with even worse ones?
Let's be real. As much as we would have loved to see it, there was absolutely no way a third string quarterback was going to win under those circumstances.
Skyler didn't play well, but c'mon. This is a rookie in his first game without any serious practice with the 1st stringers. This one game doesn't show what Skyler can or cannot develop into. I agree it shows that he's not ready right now and we're better off with Bridgewater as backup QB (i.e., 50/50 team with our backup), but one game doesn't show Skylar can't make it in the NFL.
Given the cost, and his injury history, I don't see Bridgewater as a viable backup beyond this year. At least not so much better than what Skyler could do with some practice time and development. He is super cheap too. Skyler was not ready to play on Sunday and it showed. Problem is, Bridgewater didn't look ready either.
Tannehill is/was a beast on the field. I don’t think anyone can deny that but even some of the all time GREATS were frequent victims of concussions. If you want to know why there is a grass field at Arrowhead stadium, ask Joe Montana. Montana had numerous concussions and that one pretty much sealed his career. The new anointed Joe Cool…Burrow has already stated he’s blacked out and doesn’t remember playing after suffering a concussion. That’s insanely dangerous. Bottom line, when it comes to the injury Tua suffered against the Bengals, durability isn’t an issue. When your zucchini gets smashed on the turf, a head is a head and a concussion is a concussion.
Remember Tua lost a fumble in his first NFL snap. Thompson can be a capable backup but I wasn’t expecting him to come off the bench and light it up. Our team is suffering from injuries at multiple key positions and our 3rd string qb only turned it over once(his arm was hit). Let’s see what a week of preparation can do. I still feel like we are playing with house money and hopefully Tua can return soon.
Some QBs allow their "zucchini" to be smashed a little easier. You think Josh Allen would allow someone to throw him like a ragdoll? By Tua not understanding his body and not just throwing the ball away, he allowed something like this to happen. He's allowed this type of terrible contact his whole career going back to college. As much as you'd like to throw your hands up and say "what a freak occurrence!", this could have been prevented. This IS Tua. injury prone players get injured and stay injured often for good reason.
