Gaskin over Michel? Did I miss something?

Gaskin couldn't run his way through a cheerleader. Michel is much more physical. What does Gaskin have over Michel that would give him the spot.

Michel by all accounts failed to do much during pre-season whether it be in the games or at camp whereas Gaskins did?

I thought for sure Michel would win a job as a short yardage back given all his experience in big games, but seems like Gaskin just wanted it more. I'm not thrilled by it, I felt like Michel would have been good for this team when it came down to playing real games.

He earned it. He performed better than Michel. You gotta' give props to Gaskin. I always thought he was solid. When we say how the OL and their poor play was a big reason for Tua's issues, well, the same would go for the RBs. He's not a pure #1 back, but he is solid and good to have in the rotation.

When Michel was playing a lot with the ones on the first preseason week, I knew he was in trouble.

The fantasy guys seem to think our short yardage/goal line guy will be Raheem - power through speed.

Ingold will either be clearing out the trash or getting some of those carries.

I think McCoachin' values speed over power hence - Ahmed making the team.

Gaskin is "good" at a lot of things but great at nothing.

When did Michel show power? It's been awhile. Gaskin is average at everything, which means he sucks at nothing. That's valuable.

He sucks at pass blocking, which Michel excels at.

Any RB would have sucked at pass blocking behind last yrs OL. RBs are helpers in pass pro not primary blockers. And no one can pick up multiple breaks in protection. Gaskin is a better back than Michel, that's why he was a 4 yr starter and record setter at UW and is still playing for the team that drafted him in the 7th rd and Michel who was #2 back on an SEC team was traded by the team that picked him in the 1st rd for a 6th after 2 yrs and then released by that team and then cut.

    Cuz he ain't all that

I did not see anything to make me want to keep Michel. And if the only real argument is for the power on short yardage well, we are carrying a fullback this year. I am fine with the 4 we kept.

I like Gaskin. He's a good utility back. I guarantee, this came down to a day in practice when Gaskin did something that a coach told him the previous day. Fans aren't privy to what happens on the practice field or film room and coaches want guys who actively listen and make adjustments.

It could be as simple as not hesitating while taking a cut in the outside zone. The scheme works with guys with good vision and quick decision-making. If Gaskin improved on that and Michel was incapable of adapting, that alone could be the reason why we kept Gaskin.

Not saying that's the case here, just that it's the kind of situation that might result in one player being kept over another who might have higher upside. I think Gaskin is fine as an RB3.

There’s no doubt we had a lot of depth at the skill positions during training camp. Not everyone was going to make the cut and when you have this much depth, you had better impress. I’ve not been a big Gaskins fan but when you actually look at it objectively, Gaskins performed, Michel didn’t. He wanted it more and took it.

Keep in mind, Gaskins was our feature back the past couple of seasons. We signed Edmonds and Moestert during the off-season. Gaskins knew he was already looking to be replaced. Guess that was a bit of motivation for him to step it up a notch or he was going to be on the waiver wire.

    Ability to take directions
    Alot more speed
    Better pass catching ability
    Better vision
    Better cut back ability
    Better in the locker room
    Is that enough?

I'm really, really concerned about our run game.

Edmunds should be a solid receiving back and long yardage/draw situation guy. But he's a low volume player. But everyone else is just cross our fingers and hope for the best.

As it is, I'm just expecting to wait it out and hope we draft a workhorse back and a big tight end early next Spring, so we have a more dependable offense in 2023.

Scheme is great. I'm absolutely not a believer in thinking it can make any player into a success though. Don't go cheap. Draft top talent.

Nope… said he would win that job and that I would take him over michel, and almost everyone scoffed..

Good for him, gives us a solid player on the depth chart

I mean, if you look at the Shannahan run system, it kind of does turn nearly any player into a success. Lots of RBs going through that system all the way back to Denver post Terrel Davis who performed well in the system and then failed elsewhere.

Now that doesn't mean I wouldn't love to have a Jonathan Taylor here, but in terms of a system producing RBs, this is the one.

Hopefully, if the scheme works and the OL gets sorted out, we don't need an elite All Pro at the position, but I still believe that if we have a guy who's a solid, top 20 NFL starter then its a whole lot more likely to work than just some bottom of the roster schmo like Gaskin.

Edmunds isn't a high volume back. Mostert is always injured. And McDaniel has said that he wants to run the ball 30 times a game, which I'm in favor of. So who's getting those carries? I was counting on Michel, but now he's gone.

Gaskin getting some work in an offense that maybe can open the occasional hole plus his receiving game has some appeal to me. He is certainly worthy of being a #3.

Edmunds. He should get 15. I like Ahmed better then Gaskin. You do have a point though, only 4 RB on the roster right now.

I saw nothing out of Michel that stood out. All 4 of the backs we kept on the active outplayed him in the preseason.

Michel is going to be out of the league after this year. He has lot his explosiveness through all his injuries. He has looked so pedestrian in the last few years.

IMO, I think fans overrate preseason. Even Mike McDaniel said that he puts more clout into joint practices.

Though I do not think it is meaningless. It was nice to see Raheem still have his speed for instance.

Though, I think Micheal showed in preseason what he has been showing in the last few years.

He chugged out about 600 yards over the last six games for the Rams last season. How can you get more recent than that?

I certainly wouldn't have expected that for Miami, but he solidly has averaged over 50 yards per game for his career. 12 carries for 50 yards most weeks would have been huge for us while the others made the big splash plays.

Now we're left with no one in that role and I'm confused and worried.

The guy is a loser. Couldn't even beat out Chase Edmonds.

He would have been Malcom Brown or Jordan Howard in this offense.

We are carrying a Fullback and an H back. If we need a tough yard, that is, theoretically, one of the things they should be able to do.

I'm not going to believe it until I see it. Carter has never carried the ball at the NFL level, and Ingold has 5 carries for 5 yards the last two seasons. Carter made 8 ST tackles last season, so I guess that's how they justify his salary and roster spot? At least Ingold can block.

But I'm less concerned about "one tough yard" than I am about running the ball for 4-5 yards between the tackles over and over. I believe that Edmunds or Mostert can be the type who get you a big run followed by several that get nothing. I'm not convinced that they can grind out the ground game to control the ball and eat the clock.

I think he was always just insurance in case Mostert’s health was in question to start the season.

Mostert is probably going to have a bigger role then people anticipate.

It would be awesome if he plays effectively in all 17 games. I think we'd all be happy with that. But he's 30 years old, missed most of last season, didn't play more than four games straight in 2020, and has only put together five productive games in a row once in his career. Counting on him to be more than a spark here and there is asking too much, IMO.

Not really. Every one of these running backs were under the same conditions…playing with and against second and third stringers.

If some performed and other didn’t, you have no excuses. I’m no fan of Gaskins but to his credit, he stepped up and Michel didn’t.

Same thing with Skylar Thompson. That kid played his butt off. He wanted on this team and EARNED his roster spot.
