It’s a good move for the Panthers as well as Mayfield. The NFC South is without a doubt is the worst division in the NFL and with the pending retirement of Tom Brady at the end of the upcoming season, he’ll be the top quarterback in that division. Now it’s going to be interesting to see what the Browns are going to do. Even if Watson is still a decent quarterback, they aren’t going to have him playing for…how long?
All they had to give up was (at worst) a fourth round pick AND they got Cleveland to pay more than half of his salary? Good move by Carolina.
It’s basically the Ryan Tannehill trade 2.0 Sam Darnold equates to Marcus Nariota, the over hyped but never delivered high first round pick incumbent and the trade terms are very similar to what Tennessee got with Miami. I haven’t followed Mayfield’s career in any detail, but there seems to be some similar elements of his progress being held back by a sub par organization and injury. The difference for me is that I liked Tannehill as a person and actively rooted for him to succeed in Tennessee. Mayfield doesn’t strike me as the sort of guy I’d like to have as a neighbor and invite him over for a few beers and a barbecue. So I really don’t care too much one way or the other about his performance in Carolina.
For the record I did hear from someone within the Dolphins organization that Tannehill was a really nice guy. My question to them was, "who is the nicest person on the team."
Cleveland was over a barrel. The Panthers were smart to wait for the price to drop, but he's got a short time to figure out how things work on his new team. I always wondered why Cleveland didn't try to throw him into the trade for Watson. Probably because Houston didn't want to eat his $19 million salary.
Carolina is my "home team" now so I'm hoping that he has some good years here. I've tried rooting for the Panthers for years now but it's been tough since Cam's heyday.
He was not there at that time. I think i might have asked the nicest person she had met, and it was Tannehill
IDK, I'm a Mayfield fan so I'll be rooting for him in Carolina. He's got charisma, he's been to the playoffs, he's got CMC if he can stay healthy. DJ Moore and Robby Anderson are decent receivers...Better then what he had in Cleveland. I think he'll do well.
Carolina is one of the worst situations in the entire league. You got a coach that probably shoulda been canned but has been able to stick around because he has such a long, expensive contract. I think that this moves screams desperation, and everyone is going to be fired at the end of the season. I don't think Baker is a big enough upgrade from Darnold to move the needle.
I do not agree with that at all in the sense that Cleveland Browns had a crap ton of offensive talent. Mayfield had some maturity issues but mainly just shouldn't have played last year. He did not have the mentality to change his game with an obvious physical limitation. Should have gotten surgery and came back as soon as he was healthy enough to be the gun slinger he is.
