Wow. What an offseason. Whether we're contenders on the field remains to be seen, but Grier decided he wasn't going out without a fight.

Two years removed from last good season (7 sacks, 48 tackles for Chargers in 2019).

Sounds like he might be on the decline over the past two years. I'm not too excited.

I am guessing that his salary will reflect this. Even if we get a solid situational pass rusher, that will certainly fill a need.

Hard not to like this. Outside of QB/OL, pass rush was the one I was most concerned about.

He's definitely not a full time, every down guy at this stage of his career. However, the impact he had on the KC defense last year after being traded from Pitt was undeniable. As a pass rusher and situational guy, he can definitely be a good asset. Also good veteran presence. I feel we were missing some of that last year with the loss of dude's like Van Noy.

A pass rush specialist at this point, plus we need the depth. Unless the money is over $6 million a year, I like the signing.

Really like the signing. Hopefully, he can serve as a mentor/example to Phillips for how a tenured professional edge rusher takes care of his body and his business.

This is a good signing! Added depth to a position of strength. He'll be good to rotate in. Getting after the QB is one of the better things that our defense does. Ingram gives us another menace. I do think Phillips is going to Beast this year, AVG is a playmaker, and Ogbah is like an underrated, reliable Chevy.

Veteran depth at edge is never a bad thing. Probably not a starter and that's perfectly fine. We're gearing up for a run and this is a very smart move by Miami.

Smart move/signing. We needed some help there; so that's a nice addition in any capacity.

I keep seeing this from Dolphins fans, but it seems odd that nobody is pursuing him. I know the reports said that he hasn't been able to practice much over the last two seasons but he was at least capable on the field. I can only presume that his body has degraded to the point where teams feel that he won't pass a medical or can survive one game let alone 17+.

The pessimism has nothing to do with the Dolphins though? It's to do with a player that fans are calling for without thinking that there might be a reason why nobody has yet to sign him.

I’ve read that while he hasn’t missed a start in two years, he also has practiced very little in that timeframe. Maybe the latter trait is outweighing the former, especially for a team like Miami which is rebuilding their OL.

He's just a rotational piece. As such his passrush ability is a welcomed addition.

I should make it clear that I'm not against signing him nor do I have any great knowledge of the situation. I was just trying to think through the situation, which seems to be that you have a top 5/10 Centre in the NFL available and currently it seems that nobody is going all out for him so what gives?

Looking at some people's thoughts it seems that his position as the player's representative makes teams a bit nervous about hiring him, but to the point where teams are going to let a top player in his position just not be picked up? Seems unlikely.

Others point to his injury history and the fact that he didn't practice last season. Whilst managing to make the field 16 times last season, he barely practiced during the week and so could that make teams wary of signing him? Sure. It still feels like somebody would still be willing to take the risk though.

Which leads me to another thought; what does he want? He's played in the NFL since 2013 and would've made good money in that time. Does he want another season stuck in the treatment room doing whatever's necessary to get him on the field for game time? How much would it take for him to through another year of that? At this point in his career he also probably understands that he's in a fairly unusual position in that he's a top player in his position that is available on the open market. If he was 100% then he could almost dictate his landing spot at any team in the league. Despite not being 100% he knows that there are a lot of good teams that could improve on the O-Line. So he probably gets to make the decision on does he want to make more money or more likely end up at a serious contender? Let's say $10,000,000 is the yearly want? A reasonable amount considering his talent, but how many teams are willing to pay that for a guy who probably will never see a practice field for them? I know that we can say they won't care if he plays every week, but if his body is already restricted enough that he can't practice, how long does it become until his body degrades further or that it starts impacting his on field play?

I think overall this becomes one of those areas where there will be a disconnect between what a fanbase wants and what a team wants, largely because it's not our money as a fanbase. Can the Dolphins afford to go and sign the man? The figures would suggest yes. Do the team want to pay serious money to a player that they have no allegiance to and has constant knee and ankle injuries to the point that the last team that had him, decided that he wasn't worth keeping? Possibly but it would be understandable if they didn't. Finally, does Tretter want to come here? Who knows? But the talk from sort of our fanbase that it's as simple as offer him a contract and he's ours seems a little short-sighted.

That defensive front line is shaping up to be a big strength and veeeerrrrryyy deep.

Edge ; Ogbah, Phillips, Van Ginkel, Ingram

Inside; Wilkins, Sieler, Raekwon Davis and Adam Butler.

And we’ll need all of them to stay healthy and perform as a unit at a high level to compete in the AFC, with the collection of talent at the QB position we have to wade through this year.

My only concern with this signing is what happened with him in Pittsburgh last year.

He said he wasn’t playing a big enough role and wanted to play somewhere he would be used more.

We are deep at the position, Hopefully the brass made sure he understands he is playing behind a couple guys and won’t cut into Phillips snaps/development.

I've read a lot of fans posts here.
I can state, with only a few exceptions, most posts are driven by emotion, not thinking.
I find it difficult to believe other posters here haven't seen the same thing.

In fairness, he probably just needs to beat out AVG here for playing time. If he can't do that, I would not expect there to be a big market for his services elsewhere.
