He's putting on a clinic tonight. I see lots and lots of short passes. Mix in a couple of deep shots. Obviously the familiarity with Tua. I think he's the front runner.
Tua isn't Josh Allen, but he'll be in the best possible position to succeed if Daboll is here and works with him.
Don't forget we are also interviewing Leslie Frazier, Bills DC. He's not really an exciting candidate imo, kind of that boring retread type. But they are both getting it done tonight.
Should we seek out the coaches of the worst teams? I get what you are saying, but most good teams have good players. The point is, did he help develop any of them? Does he put them into position to succeed? Does he seem like a good gameplanner? Playcaller? Do we think his coordinator skills can translate into full game management?
No, but I'll tell you who I do think he might bring... Mitch Trubisky This could be a sneaky good signing. Matt Nagy has essentially proven that he cannot develop a young QB. Daboll got a chance to work with him, and there are very few people other than him who know how much he has improved. I think that adding him would work on multiple levels. First of all, Tua gets hurt a lot, so we need a primo backup. I would bring him in and say that he is here to backup Tua, and has system familiarity. I think if you are Trubisky, this is a very, very attractive opportunity for him. Remember when the Titans brought in Ryan Tannehill to back up Marcus Marriotta? If he is smart, he is probably thinking that he could A - go to a terrible team that need a QB and much more or B - come to Miami and try and beat out Tua and land up on a team with Waddle and a solid defense. I really do think that this would be a mutually beneficial signing. Maybe he is just a backup, but then again, maybe he is a reclamation project.
I'd honestly rather have Leslie Frazier out of the two Jills Coordinators. Ideally he uses his past Vikings connections and gets Klint Kubiak to come OC for him. I think that combo walks in and wins from go.
Thought about this the other day. I have a feeling this is what’s going to end up happening. Daboll and and Trubisky to Miami.
Absolutely I’m sold. McDermott is a defensive coach. I think all credit for the Buffalo offense and Allen hitting his full potential goes to Daboll. Watching him orchestrate a perfect offensive game last night (which had never been done before) in the playoffs and against a top 5 NFL defense… is truly incredible. Add in his history with Tua and likely harmony amongst the players and coaches. It’s another selling point. We’ve already exhausted the angst/distrust option for years. Might as well try something different.
So long as Daboll is a "yes ma'am" to the front office, he would fit in perfectly. The head coach position in Miami is nothing more than a "shut up and do as you're told" position.
It doesn't matter who they choose. As long as they keep Tua and his RPO offense, they'll never be good. They will never have a strong offense. They'll waste the young defensive talent. Flores saw and knew that, but Grier won. Bad for Dolphins fans.
He could have hired more experience but I don't think that was the root of the issue. He got rid of Gailey who had a spread scheme offense that Tua admitted he didn't learn and understand. A system that was built for Fitz. So they hired dual OCs that built an entire scheme around what Tua knew and was good at, RPO. It's literally all he's good at (See graphic). Quick RPO passes. They also brought in Charlie Frye who was Tua's QB whisperer who had experience with him. Then they drafted Waddle, someone Tua had experience with . Was the line very bad? Absolutely. Does Flo some of the blame? Yes. All of that blame? Absolutely not. However, you aren't going to get another coaching staff that went out of their way to cater to Tua anymore. No one is figuring more out with Tua. This is what he is. Those are his physical limitations. Flores saw he was injury prone. Saw he lacked high levels of physical skill. Didn't like things in work ethic. Wanted to move on. I can't blame him.
Main issue with Daboll is that he was OC for some of the worst offenses year after year until he got Allen. Then one of the best: https://www.pro-football-reference.com/coaches/DaboBr0.htm Both from points scored and yards gained look at the rankings: always in the 20's or 30's (out of 32 teams!) until Allen's 2nd year. So is Daboll really the guy you want if you don't have someone like Allen?
Tua having an injury history is not exactly breaking news and yet Flores wanted to draft him anyway and then failed to build a competent offensive staff.
I’ve seen things where he preferred Herbert and told Tua to his face that Mac Jones is better. We’re never going to know what happened behind the scenes. Maybe Flores is a tyrannical monster or maybe Grier/Ross are saving face. Based on track record, I lean towards Grier/Ross being the root of the dysfunction. Since we dont know the truth, I’ll blame Flores for his staff issues and Grier for his long documented history of misses in the draft, for his failure to find a franchise QB and build a respectable OL.
The person who said that about Mac Jones said Flores didn't say that and he misspoke. We have multiple reporters saying he wanted Tua. So I blame them both for their inability to pick the right QB and Flores for his inability to develop the one they did take making the situation even worse.
I suspect it's a "column a" and "column b" situation. But aside from the issue with Harbaugh like a decade ago, I'm not sure what "track record" Grier and Ross have of dysfunction? Not specific to you, but I am seeing a narrative built of how Ross and Grier just want a "yes man" to have the job and dumped Flores because he dared to contradict them. However, this seems to ignore way to many contradictions. We have talked in the past about Ross hanging on too long to poor coaches like Gase. We have seen major dysfunction among the coaching staff below Flores which is not at all on Ross/Grier. We have seen multiple Patriots assistants promoted to coaches who struggle with the exact same thing. We have seen instances of Flores' ego get in the way of putting out the best team. We saw Grier and Ross be open to the idea of Watson which seems to have emanated exclusively to Flores, to the point that Grier had a deal in place and Ross only nixed it due to the ongoing (and severe) legal issues. I find it very fair to question some of the decisions and draft picks from Grier, and to question what the issue has been in selecting an elite coach from Ross. Ross' tenure as an owner has been disastrous in terms of results, and Grier's only silver lining is that maybe the staff dysfunction is making some of his picks (namely the Tua/Jackson/Iggy trio and OL in general) look far worse than they actually are. I was totally fine with the idea of moving on from Grier (and I'm still hopeful that he has ceded actual behind the scenes power to Marvin Allen - it's no coincidence that our best draft happened the year he came), and question his remaining. But at the same time, I find this pro-Flores narrative to be baffling. I think he was a guy whose fate could have gone either way based on field results, and as it turned out, his off-field issues were worse than many of us thought. The staff dysfunction was both obvious and questioned going into the season, have been present all through his tenure and likely weren't stopping.
It's literally all over the board right now. I see the same thing you do with regard to Ross/Grier, but the narrative that has been building is that Ross/Grier are incompetent (fair) guys who just want a pushover coach to do what they say (imo false).
Agreed. No Daboll. He's an @sshole and riding on Allen's success: https://sports.yahoo.com/ms-silver_colt_mccoy_browns_brian_daboll_112411.html
All I know is with SF winning we are now picking at best 26th in the draft. Unbelievable.. thanks Grier! Oh, and after Cinci winning we are now only 2nd to Detroit for longest playoff win drought. They're at 30 years we're at 21. Thanks Ross!
1. Who cares? We screw up our high picks anyway. 2. Not going to happen. SF would lose to the Chiefs, the Titan or the Bills.
Disintegrate? You're making the assumption they were ever integrated Roethlisberger is going to do the same thing Marino did...retire after a dismal Wildcard loss...and become only the 2nd quarterback to start his rookie season and his final season in a playoff game.
