One thing I think we’ve missed for a long time is an identity. Defense. Offense. What are we. it seems like a solid right now, but could be next level, defense. I’m all for that. Defense keeps you in. And in bad weather it’s what wins. I’m all for that identity.
I'm grateful that we've clawed our way back to .500, but I'm not a fan of anything that we do on either side of the ball, honestly. We haven't had an offense that I've been happy with in more than 25 years, and that's still my desire.
That’s kinda what I’m saying. We don’t have an identity and until you do have one, it seems like we will continue to just flounder. I want to be competitive and have teams worried about our offensive prowess or our defensive dominance.
It's pretty rare for a SB winner to be one-sided, so having an identity that says you're good at only one side of the ball is really bad. Statistically, offense is more important than defense for winning the SB with an average z-score across SB history of 0.94 for points per game for the SB winning offense and 0.41 points allowed per game for the defense. In today's game with ppg average of 23.1 (currently) in 2021, that translates to the offense scoring on average 27.5 ppg and the defense allowing 21.2 ppg. Our defense is good enough in this recent streak but with the mishaps early on we're still a bit shy. We've allowed 22.3 ppg this year. Our offense however is pathetic. We're scoring 20.4 ppg so we're a full TD per game below where we need to be. So hopefully in the future we do NOT have an "identity" and have both a good offense and defense, with greater priority on the offense. That means Tua needs to improve and we need to give him more protection and weapons. Maybe we found the RB we were looking for today?
I don't want to sound like a brat, but we could have the #1 defense in the league, and if the offense sucked, I wouldn't be happy or excited. We've been there and done that. Its not the football that makes me have confidence and its not fun to watch.
