Spoiler: RE: Spoiler Apparently, Meng'er Zhang, the actress who plays the sister Xu, is a stage and theatre actress/singer, who had never acted on camera before, even in China. I had the same impressions that you did for the most part. Hopefully she can grow into the role when she appears in her next movie. As for Trevor, I really enjoyed them brining back Ben Kingsley, and felt that it added some needed levity to the movie when he showed up, and they found a clever way to make his character useful for a while. Just the right amount, and not too much.
Essentially, the whole MCU has been delayed, post The Eternals and Hawkeye. https://geektyrant.com/news/disney-...black-panther-sequel-indiana-jones-5-and-more Dr. Strange and the Multiverse of Madness moves from March 25 to May 6, 2022 Thor: Love and Thunder moves from May 6 to July 8, 2022 Black Panther: Wakanda Forever moves from July 8 to November 11, 2022 The Marvels moves from November 11, 2022 into February 17, 2023 Antman & The Wasp: Quantamania moves from February 17 2023 to July 8, 2023 Two other unnamed MCU movies have been removed from the schedule, originally dated 7/28/23 and 10/6/23. It had been speculated that these would be Guardians of the Galaxy 3, and either Blade or The Fantastic Four. It remains unsaid to this point if this will effect the shows that are coming to Disney+. Ms. Marvel had already been pushed into early 2022, while She Hulk and Moon Knight were tentatively scheduled for some point next year as well. Secret Invasion has largely been expected to air at the end of 2022, but its fair to wonder if the Marvels being pushed back will effect that as well, given Carol Danver's connection to Nick Fury. Ironheart, Armor Wars and Echo were expected to air in 2023, and the second season of Loki is announced without a date.
https://geektyrant.com/news/kevin-f...onal-rollercoaster-of-losing-spider-man-again Its a bit vague, as these things often are, but Kevin Feige says, quote "I don't anticipate us going through that emotional rollercoaster, or putting fans through that emotional rollercoaster, again." regarding not knowing if Marvel will keep Spiderman in the MCU or not. Some people are taking that to mean that Tom Holland and the character are in it for the long haul and indefinate future, as Holland has said that he wants to be. Others are taking it to mean that Marvel and Sony have worked out an outline for how the end of Spiderman's time in the MCU will come, and make it happen in a long planned out and hopefully satisfying manner for everyone. Time will tell.
https://screenrant.com/black-panther-2-production-shutdown-letitia-wright-injury/ Laticia Wright has still not recovered from the "minor injury" that she sustained in August on the set of the Black Panther sequel and director Ryan Coogler says that he's filmed as much as he can without her, and now has to stop production until she's ready to go again, which won't happen until next year at some point. This had led to people (including me) thinking that the whole rearrangement of the MCU schedule is because of this, and that if Wright can't get back to filming sooner rather than later, we could see further adjustments. Its very tricky when everything is connected and one move effects everything else, and they need to go in a certain order, or at least very close to it.
I had hoped that the luke warm and mediocre early reviews of The Eternals were, like many others, ones that I would end up disagreeing with. Sadly, that's not the case. I saw the movie today, and was less impressed by it than I have been by a MCU movie in a long time. Maybe since 2013, when Iron Man 3 and Thor 2 came out. Its not what I expected it to be, and its nowhere close to what I had hoped that it could be. The movie isn't poorly made. The acting and special effects are fine. But its two and a half ours of slowly meandering from one thought and place to another, always calmly, and generally with a sense of melancholy. Its not shot like a MCU movie, its not written like a MCU movie, and it doesn't feel like a MCU movie. Its like a group of long time friends going through a collective mid-life crisis disguised as a superhero film. If anything, it feels more like one of the better DC movies in recent years, and that's not a compliment. At times a bit like Watchmen, from 2009, in a broad sense. There are also various points through the movie where the broad outline is pointed out, and I can't help but wish that they had done things differently than they do - gone into more detail here, give a lot more backstory there, give a few lines of dialogue to close a plot hole, and another, and another, ect. Its not as tight as MCU movies usually are, and they spend so much time on the various characters feelings that they've left with not nearly enough room for digging into the actual plot, despite the movie's extreme length. In the end, I'm left disappointed because it could have been so different and yet told the same story in a more enjoyable way, and hoping that a different writer and director do more with the characters in the future.
I had a completely different experience. I had a lot of fun with it. I enjoyed the different direction and thought the cinematography was beautiful. Though it did feel like a lot in one movie, I loved the characters, enjoyed the action, and loved the bigness of the questions that it presented.
What did you think of the OG Captain America movie and Ragnarok? IMO those are probably the two most tonally and directorially different movies from just being a standard Marvel hero flick (and to be clear, I'm not denigrating the normal stuff, I enjoy it). The OG Cap movie was basically a WW2 movie for a good while, while Ragnarok's heavy comedic turn was notably different from Thor 1-2 and even the other movies like Iron Man which employed some humor. I might also lump the Wandavision and Loki TV series with those two movies as beating to a somewhat different drum. I am glad the cinematography seems to have lived up to the hype. I LOVE gorgeous movies, it's one of the more important things I consider when I turn things over in my mind on the degree to which I like or dislike films. I really enjoyed The Last Jedi, for instance, in part because the cinematography and shots were so incredible as to halt some of the knee jerk responses I saw from others. Dune as well was just an incredibly shot film.
I love Captain America. Its a fun movie, moves along really well, and does a great job of estabilishing the characters and setting a good tone. Ragnarock is actually one of my favorite movies of all time, hands down. MCU or not. I absolutely love adventure comedies, and the industry as a whole was severley lacking in them for ages. What I love about the MCU is that all of the movies are fun. They get there in their own different ways, but they all achieve the same basic goal. But The Eternals just wasn't, at least for me. Its too serious. Its to dreary, and downbeat, and feels like a bunch of people who are stuck somewhere they they don't want to be and are trying to make the best of the situation, but never really do. Its just not made the way I enjoy moves to be made. Its not my flavor, so to speak. While that's a personal choice for me, it seems to be one that's shared by a lot of other people who have seen it as well.
Saw Eternals. While I can kind of understand some of the hate, I thought it was flat out excellent. It does feel the least Marvelly of the Marvel movies - that's a fair criticism, and if you were expecting a "generic" Marvel film (again, not meaning that in a negative way, they just have a certain vibe) I can see some disappointment. But I will say that man, I think this was a super challenging film to pull off, and I think some of the attacks on the director and the choices made are WAY off base. Because, while this IS a Marvel movie, it's NOT an Avengers movie. It just absolutely dwarfs the rest of the film MCU in size and scope, and that's including the space faring Guardians. Like, by orders of magnitude. The challenge of filming the actual Celestials, and literally taking us from the creation of our universe to our present world? Holy smoke. Taking 10 team members most of the audience will have very little to no knowledge of (certainly when compared to the main Avengers), giving them each a background and story, letting each of them develop together and independently across all of humanity's history? Telling it's own contained story while still also being a setup to perhaps multiple other movies/directions via Spoiler not just the remainder of the Eternals, but also Starfox and Black Knight . Something else man, and TBH Zhao pulled it off and made it look fantastic. The powers were so well done imo - from the Ikarus laser vision, to Thena's arsenal and especially Makkari's super speed (using shockwaves was a great idea). It's not without flaws certainly. The "big bad" Deviant felt completely superfluous by the end being perhaps my biggest (and I didn't really like his design, though the other Deviants were fine). The twists weren't super clever or well hidden, but I thought they were still executed well enough. And again, yeah, it had parts that didn't feel standard for Marvel - the romance and love scene ofc, but even bits like Spoiler Hiroshima, which personally I thought maybe underwhelmed , Phastos Spoiler having a kid and even being in a gay relationship - I thought it was generic/organic enough, but you know certain types will react poorly. Also, Ikarus Spoiler: MAJOR SPOILER flying into the sun was a bit on the nose lol. If you were expecting "Avengers but with a different cast" or "Guardians on Earth" I can see some initial confusion, but for me it was honestly a breath of fresh air. I was ready for different, I was ready for a change of pace, we have plenty of Avenger's style movies (and more coming). I guess I'm just good with having the occasional movie strike out on a different path, especially when it's something pretty whack to begin with like the concept of the Eternals in the comics are.
https://screenrant.com/black-panther-2-letitia-wright-set-injury-worse-details/ The details of Laticia Wright's injuries on the set of Black Panther 2 have finally come out into the open: Hopefully, she's OK. And hopefully, she can resume work on the film in January as is currently set. They didn't come out and say it, but this is almost certainly the reason most of the MCU schedule was pushed back, and if she's not ready to go when planned, that might end up happening again.
Might be unpopular, but I don't like her in the Marvel Universe and was not thrilled that she would be taking the mantle from Chadwick. I think either Winston Duke or especially Lupita Nyong'o would have been much better choices. That said, I certainly don't want to see anyone hurt and hopefully she recovers fully.
Well, we really don't know what direction Wakanda Forever is going to take. All of the other main characters are returning, and Kevin Feige just stated again that they aren't recasting BP himself. So, we'll have to wait and see. Between this movie and the two shows directly related to it that are in the pipes, I'm sure most of the cast will get their share of screen time. Plus probably in other Marvel projects too.
I watched the first two episodes of Hawkeye and enjoyed them. Its a slow burn, but very much what I expected. Gifted young character gets into trouble by chance and gruff, experienced older character comes to their aid reluctantly. It feels like things are really going to take off in Episode 3, and since there are only 6, that makes sense. I also watched Shang Chi for the second time (first at home), and its just as fun to watch again. My ten year old really liked it too. Mostly safe for that age group, save for a few curse words.
Hawkeye looks more like a movie than a TV show, so far. I hope they maintain that focus for the remainder of the season. They set it up nicely and I hope they stick the landing like they did with Loki but failed with Falcon & The Winter Soldier. I also enjoyed Shang-Chi and will be rewatching it soon. Made the mistake of watching Venom: There Will Be Carnage this week and it seems more like they made it in order to make money than to tell a story and that's the biggest no-no for me. Will not be watching it or the first Venom film any time soon. Sony sucks so much.
I have absolutely zero interest in Venom or any Sony property that's not MCU Spider-Man. Crossing my fingers that those stay forever separated.
Spoiler Alert: The mid-credit scene of Venom: TWBC shows Venom and Eddie Brock taking interest in Peter Parker, who had just been doxxed by J. Jonah Jameson as Spider-Man. So, the Sony-verse and the MCU are now one reality.
Then I hope it stops there. Or at least those characters don't intrude into the mcu proper. I just don't want to feel obligated to watch that. It's not something I would enjoy at all.
I think Sony wants to use Spider-Man for one film (maybe Kraven The Hunter) and they'll probably introduce Miles Morales in it so he can be Spider-Man going forward. Pretty sure Spider-Man's days within the MCU are over after next month. Sony's going to screw up Miles Morales' Spider-Man just as badly as they've screwed up Peter Parker in previous bites at the apple. It's what happens when you let studio heads make decisions about comics-based films instead of fanboys like Kevin Feige and Zach Snyder.
Well, I'm almost as surprised as you are, but Disney and Sony just announced that they are making three more Spiderman movies for the MCU starring Holland. So things are stable for the near future. And this announcement is purely about more Spiderman movies, so that means that Holland could and likely will be in other MCU projects in that time frame too. https://geektyrant.com/news/sony-an...man-movies-together-with-tom-holland-starring https://www.ign.com/articles/tom-holland-spiderman-mcu-trilogy-marvel-sony
I'm seriously shocked. Holland just said that if he's still making Spider-Man movies when he's 30, he's done something wrong. Perhaps it was a negotiating feint?
My wife just opined that given Holland's tendency for spilling the beans, perhaps he was going all out in the other direction to deflect.
I watched it the other day and really enjoyed it- Venom is essentially a comedian delivering constant one-liners. It didn't feel like a superhero/MCU movie but I do think it's worth watching. Spoiler: Best One-Liner The one that cracked me up the most was when Venom saw his spawn/offspring and said something like, "Oh, it's a red one...never mind. We're going to die, let's get out of here!" That killed me!
For you and Lucky- is Hawkeye worth watching now, or should I wait until the whole thing is rolled out? I almost watched the first few episodes over the holiday break but decided to wait.
I think that depends. Do you go on Twitter or any other website where people will post spoilers? If you do, do you mind being spoiled? It is done in the Disney Marvel style of the show being cut wrong. Well in my opinion. What I mean is that the episodes start with the climax of the previous episode and end at the part where the climax is supposed to begin. In a frustrating way to keep you watching the show. I am growing to hate this. If it wasn't for spoilers and my love of being surprised when I watch stuff, I would just watch them all at once. Too many episodes end with, "Ooo, something is about to happen." and then nothing happens.
It depends how patient you are and how much you like to binge things, probably. The first two episodes are about an hour and a half total, and are mostly setup. Sort of like the first 20 minutes of a two hour movie would be, if that makes sense. Personally, I like watching one episode a week, or at least taking a few days between them. It lets me take it all in subconsiously and process it, and that gives me a better frame of mind for the next one and helps me remember everything. Plus, as Dupree said, if you watch them as they're released you won't be spoiled. People have gotten really, really lax about throwing spoilers out almost immediately these days, and it drives me nuts. I want to go into any movie or episode completely naieve about what's going to happen other than my own personal guess and hunch.
I don't think I would like that either- so I'll wait until the whole series is out. I stay off social media pretty much anyway.
Yeah, me too- I don't want to know who dies at the end, or what horrible things the bad guy did. I want the full experience.
Yeah, they're putting spoilers into YouTube video titles now. Some even put them in thumbnails. Anything for clicks (and to take views away from other creators). Personally, I'm cool with watching the shows each week. There were a few episodes of F&TWS that were complete duds and if I was binging when one of them came up, I'd probably want to step away for a day or so. Probably can say the same for the Quicksilver episodes of WandaVision, too. Watching them every week, cushions the blow of my disappointment in bad episodes.
https://geektyrant.com/news/cobie-s...-maria-hill-in-marvels-secret-invasion-series Cobie Smulders will return as Maria Hill in the Secret Invasion series. I'm really looking forward to this one, and think it has the potential to be really awesome.
Me too. She's kind of a prop for Nick Fury in most of her appearances. Hopefully, they'll use the opportunity to flesh out her character the way they did for Wanda, Vision, Sam, Bucky, Sharon, and even Loki. The single best thing about the Disney+ MCU shows is that they made 3D characters out of people who got lost in the ensembles. There's no time to give everybody depth in a movie, but the shows made me see them as more than NPCs for the folks who got the real dialogue.
Caught up on Hawkeye. It has very late 90s/early 2000s energy. That's neither a complaint nor a compliment, just an observation. I like it, but it does feel like they're trying to stretch a 90 minute movie into a 6-episode mini-series.
Of all the Disney+ MCU shows, it plays the most like a movie. There's some filler, but so far, not whole episodes of it like there was in the previous shows (except for Loki). There seems to be a ton of universe building going on with it and I'm guessing that the upcoming Echo series won't be the only spinoff/sequel to it.
I agree. One of my very favorite things about the MCU is how its all interconnected and something that happens in one, happens in all of them. This show is very likely being used not only as a goodbye to Clint, but as the jumping off point for multiple other characters to spread their wings in the future.
Renner has said that he wants to be a leader of the West Coast Avengers Maybe this is how he gets his groove back to lead a young Avengers team
That would be cool, I hadn't heard that. What I'd read from a while back was that he felt that he was getting too old to keep playing a super hero. But maybe transitioning to a Nick Fury type of role would make it more appealing.
