If not the Dolphins, who would you root for and why?

Just for a bit of fun. There's a few people on here said recently, in the light of the Watson trade rumours, that they'd consider taking their allegiance elsewhere. Whether it would be true or not, it got me thinking - if the Dolphins franchise suddenly ceased to be, who would I follow?

For me, I wouldn't - couldn't, throw my weight behind one of the more popular outfits. Over here in the UK, apart from the Dolphins (for some bizarre reason, obviously not based on recent success), the popular teams seem to be Patriots (puke!), Cowboys, Packers, Steelers, Jags and now the Bucs. If I followed someone else, it would have to be someone way down the pecking order in the popularity stakes. Lions? Colts? Nah, blue and white for a start, not for me. Vikings? Saints? Mmmmm, possibly, I do identify with Viking lore, but that purple??? Browns? Very possible. Solid history, great working class/blue collar fan base, Baker Mayfield, about as useless as the Dolphins. Boxes ticked, what's not to like? Er, logo doesn't look great on a cap. What logo? The plain brown helmet? Hmmm, no further questions, y'honour...

For me, if the Dolphins weren't around, I think I'd follow the Falcons! I'm a birder, so the name resonates with me. I love the red, white and black colour scheme they've got going on. Those are the colours of my soccerball team, Sheffield United, so the merch slots right in seamlessly. I like the logo, looks great on caps, t's etc. And I love the nickname 'dirty birds'. Takes me back to my youth when Friday and Saturday nights were all about drinking beer and meeting 'dirty birds'... a-hem.

So who would other readers follow and why? Just for fun.

It's hard to even imagine me rooting for another team. I might just give up watching all together. I'm from Allentown PA so I guess that makes me a Philly fan by default. I'm already a Sixers fan and that is extremely painful at times. It takes a lot to be a Philly fan. I'm also...A Phillies fan for baseball. I like St.Joes for college B Ball so it's pretty much Philly across the board. I'm even a Penn State fan for football. I've seen Randall Cunningham play every bit as much as I saw Dan Marino play. I've also lived in Phoenix AZ so I have some Cardinal love as well and Kyler Murray is growing on me in a hurry. I now live in TN and Derrick Henry is something else. Usually it takes a player for me to fall for a franchise and then I'm stuck with them. Dan Marino sealed my fate as a Fins fan. Charles Barkley made me a lifelong Sixers fan. Just a year ago Deshaun Watson was my favorite player in the entire league, so this whole thing has been extra difficult for me personally. Having him in Miami was a dream come true, but now it's turning into a potential nightmare. I don't know. Gun to me head, if I had to pick another football team to follow? I guess I'm comin home to Philly.

I like dolphins so I root for them, but if they weren't around and I had to root for another team (not sure I would) it would probably be the Seahawks. Like you I like birds of prey, but I like the blue-green part of the spectrum more than red, so I'd go with the Seahawks.

No way I'd have the same level of intensity of support though. It does make a difference we're the dolphins lol.

Same for me. I started rooting for them in 1983 when I was 6. Growing up in Iowa, everyone liked the Bears, Packers and Vikings. Seeing a passionate, young QB throwing lasers drew me to them long before I even understood the game.

I’ve stuck with them for 38 years of my life. As frustrating as it is, I can handle losing. I can’t handle trading for QB’s who are sexual deviants and possibly don’t respect women. Hopefully those are all rumors.

I would/do root fo the Chargers and 49ers. The Chargers because I wanted us to draft Herbert and he looks like the real deal. The 49ers because of Iowa TE Kittle. This year I’m rooting against them because it helps the Dolphins.

Packers. I lived in Green Bay for a few years as a kid, went to a few Lambeau games (right before the Favre era lol). Followed them as my NFC team since. Phins have always been my 1, but the Pack have been a good backup through all the strife here.

Outside of that, I'm just a general fan of the game (see Rob Lowe and his NFL hat). I also enjoy rooting for/against certain players and sometimes teams. It gets tough when a player you like is on a team you like to root against though.

I will always be a Miami Dolphins fan. Its a part of my DNA now. Anyone who knows me knows me as "that guy who's the Dolphins fan". There is absolutely nothing that they could do to lose me. If they go 1-16 each year for the next decade, I'll still be there 11 years from now and hoping for better times. The problem is never the team, its the people.

That being said, if the team went defunct and ceased to exist, or moved to another area and completely changed their branding to something that I disliked, I'd probably become a Steelers fan. I grew up in the Pittsburgh area, the vast majority of my family and friends are Steeler fans, and the only reason that I'm not is that my dad hates team sports and never exposed me to it. My choice to become a Dolphins fan was made at 7 years old because they were my favorite animal, aqua was my favorite color, and I happened to watch them play in the Super Bowl at my grandparent's house.

Honestly, its not that difficult for me to root against a player that I like. I went to Tennessee at the same time that Peyton Manning did. He is easily my second favorite QB of all time after Marino. But since he was in our division at first, I rooted for him to fail during those years, and to have the Fins pick him off and sack him as much as possible when we faced him.

    Fins first. Forever.

I’ve made mine known…Titans for me and the reason why? The Dolphins franchise quarterback, Ryan effing Tannehill…the one who proved me RIGHT about him is their quarterback.

And as I said in another thread…if Patriots fans can root for the Buccaneers because Brady is their quarterback, then I can root for the Titans for the same reason.

Eh, i dont think i would root for a specific team.. there are a lot of teams i like in the NFL. I like the browns, bengals, chargers, saints, cardinals, titans, raiders, falcons… hell i like watching josh allen play… there are many other teams i like to watch play

i will say though my fandom for the Dolphins is not as strong as it was 15-20 years ago. I was obsessed during the JT/ZT/Ricky era.. now.. i still follow them but if theres a better game to watch and the dolphins are playing.. i am probably watching that other game and occasionally tuning back to the dolphins to see Tua throw an interception.

I was born in Tampa and have always had a soft spot for the Bucs, mostly because my late father was a fan. I don't wear their gear or go to their games, but I'm happy when they win (unless they're playing the Dolphins.)

I might just watch Red Zone, at least for a while.
My wife's family were Packers fans so that's one option. I think, though, I'd have to look for a well run organisation, one with a good culture - since the reason I'd not be following the Dolphins is essentially a culture/management issue.

I'd have to dig into that.

Some teams I'd take a look at would be the Ravens, Titans, Vikings, Steelers... really not sure.

I might just follow different players, teams, lightly. Watch a variety of games, enjoy the storylines throughout the league. Look for good matchups etc. That sort of thing.

The only other team I have a remote interest in is the Tennessee Titans due to Tannehill. That's been my "playoff team" the past 3 years anyway and it is fun to have a fallback once Miami gets eliminated. I've also tried to root for my current hometown Panthers but I just can't seem to care- I ended up rooting for Manning and Denver to beat them in that super bowl.

I think the only option for me is to remain a Dolphins fan and a sorta-kinda fan of Tennessee. For now it works!

I think it would be the Bengals right now. They are lovable losers, and I think that Burrow is a ton of fun to watch. Chase is dynamic.

I couldn’t pick another team. Phins til I die!
But if the Phins went away I’d just cheer for my second favorite team. Whoever is playing the jest. Might have to expand to whoever is playing other teams I hate like the foreskins and the crows week to week.
Could go with my local team the shehacks, but that would make me a “12” and those bastards are just too ****ing annoying. Can’t do it.
If they trade for Johnny jerk off I don’t know what I’ll do. But it won’t be cheering for him

LMAO, you still root against the Jets? They're so bad I stopped rooting against them a few years ago- now I just feel sorry for them! I did spend most of my life hating that team though and seeing them as our biggest rival.

I've often thought that if I were to give up on the Dolphins I'd try being a Cowboy fan. They're on TV here a lot and I don't hate their colors, but every time I end up watching them I find myself hating them and hoping they lose.

Maybe the Raiders because it would be another excuse to go to Vegas.... But nah, I hate them too.

I'd probably do as a few others have said.... Watch RedZone and not have a favorite team.

Same for me for the same reason.

Also, the Bills. Hometown team with tons of friends and family that are fans. I don't live in WNY any more but the region would go nuts with a SB win.

Finally, on a weekly basis, anybody playing the Jets, Pats, or Brady. Imagine my glee when Tannehill and the Titans ended Brady's career in NE. Now if only the Dolphins could do something.

I cant with the Cowboys… Patriots.. Jets or any team Brady is in… i dont like the chiefs… just an arrogant bunch in Kansas City and now theyre getting their teeth kicked in..

i also am not a fan of Russell Wilson… theres something about Wilson’s personality that doesnt come off genuine, seems rehearsed and forced.. also he goes on these little hot streaks and then becomes a turnover machine.. that team hasnt done anything ever since their defense has fallen apart..

I used to despise the Bills as much as the Jets and Patriots.. but they have the team i want us to become.. and i just love watching Josh Allen play.. if that team trades for a dynamic running back before the deadline… theyre the AFC favorites in my opinion..

I approve the trade for Watson. There is plenty of talent to be had in other rounds, and always a chance to trade back into first later with players/picks. Not to mention shoring up some major holes through FA. We just need the proper GM to do it, and I don't think we're going to get them. I'm more worried about that than Watson actually being prosecuted, and it doesn't matter if he plays this season or not anyway.

Tua (if he stops throwing braindead ints) and sticks to his wheelhouse of plays, is live trade bait himself. While we get instant QB upgrade. I do not know how Dolfans can say no to that.

Would you go back and stop the Dolphins Ricky Williams trade? This is a more important position that the Fins have been cursed at since DAN.

tl;dr Haven't thought about it much, but now that you got me on it: Saints, Titans, Falcons, Carolina.
