At least one random Twitter user lists Dolphins fans in the 'elite' tier of his NFL fan listings:

Then again, he has Eagles fans in the 'Good' tier...

He does say that it's "based on interactions I've had".

What say you Phins fans, are we elite, or would you disagree? Why?

Also, How many of you actually get to hang around with other Dolphins fans IRL? As far as I know I'm the only Dolphins fan in Gibraltar, so my only connections are online.

I'd say after years of disappointment after disappointment, we're probably up there with the most realistic and tempered of fanbases. I know any time I've ever gloated about the Phins there's been a caveat attached. I think we have perspective too- we know a bad thing when we see it at this point and a good thing when we see it. I think we know what fool's gold looks like.

I go to all the nfl message board communities just to research stuff..

I can tell you equivocally that the Miami Dolphins fans are the most active online fan base in the league..

Philly fans will turn on each other and the team in a heartbeat. I think he's got the mostly toxic list spot on aside from the Arizona Cardinals. I really don't remember their fanbase being all that when I lived out there. Of course that was in the early 90s when the team was awful. In terms of just "die hard" fan base, I have to say...The elite list if pretty accurate. Fans of these teams love their franchise no matter what.

When people ask me what's your team, I always say "I'm a long suffering Miami Dolphins fan".

The chart is weird, to start with. Obviously, its based on one person's own experiences. But he had Steelers and Chiefs fans near the bottom, and both are known to be among the most loyal and passionate of anyone. And in my experience, neither is anywhere near as annoying (or violent, or disturbed) as other teams.

No one likes Raider fans. They attract a very specific type of bozo. I haven't met a lot of Buccaneer fans, but the ones I've known have been similar. Drunk and loud.

Bills fans love their team passionately, in spite of the lack of success. But again, they aren't people I'd often want to spend a lot of time around. Almost universally very loud, and say whatever is on their mind when a game is on, no matter who else is around. Tactless.

As for us Dolphins fans ourselves, I've long held the belief that we are almost unique among major pro sports teams in the US. The Fins don't have a huge, passionate local fan base. At least not any more. And yet, there are Dolphins fans everywhere. You can look at the top lists in most markets and we'll be in the 10 to 15 range everywhere as far as "who are you a fan of". And I think that we largely tend to be very loyal, very hopeful, but also pretty cynical.

In a nutshell, Hurricane Andrew leveled Miami in the early 90's and locals scattered across the country. Others in South Florida are snowbirds- living up north in the summers and vacationing there in the winter. So between the two, you have a lot of folks who aren't in the area that love the Dolphins.

Then you have the two football factors- the perfect team in the 70's and Marino in the 80's and 90's. We basically went three decades without a losing season and there are very few teams who have seen our overall level of success. That also draws national interest- plus we now have the long string of international games as well. While we don't have a lot of rings to show for all that, we've been a tough, respected team for quite a long time.

I suspect the animal, the Dolphin, and the colours of the team have a lot to do with it. If you have no home team loyalty then often it comes down to things like that, and Miami the destination, the bright colours, and dolphins, are all well known and popular.

Key and Galant, I agree with both of you. I think that all of that is partly the reason. There are a ton of Dolphins fans in their 40s and 50s who have never lived anywhere near Florida, both here on the board and in general. The 80s and 90s were a big reason, and the colors and mascot spoke to me strongly as a kid.

It might be a minor thing, but I do think that people who grew up far from Miami and chose to be fans might have a personality that's less likely to be hostile if they are attracted to the Fins image, truly.

The only interaction I've had with Raiders fans was when we played them at Wembley a few years back, and a whole bunch of them were in the rooftop bar opposite Wembley with us after the game. They were all pretty cool and I had no problems with them whatsoever.
