I'm glad X got his bag. And I'm happy with the structure. He gets paid if he plays well and often. It's a win-win.
Definitely- I hope he hits every incentive and makes out like a bandit! I don't know if 10 picks is a realistic expectation with offenses knowing his name more this season, but Byron Jones is a big part of forcing the ball his way (and vice versa). If the rest of the secondary improves this season, then it's possible to be the same turnover machine as last year. Really looking forward to it since this defense is going to carry us a long way in 2021. Combined with what we're hearing about the offense...this team is getting awfully serious folks!
I love the fact that he bet on himself. Shows that he expects to play at an all-pro level. And I hope he gets every incentive, too.
Looking at the way his previous deal was structured it makes perfect sense to me that: 1) X was unhappy with it; 2) X fired the agent who negotiated it; 3) The phins didn’t want to change it. A lot of the dollars in that contract were very easy to make disappear.
Never gonna happen. Besides base salary and guarantees are paid on the expectation of future performance, whilst (true) bonuses are paid for performance. The expectation of future performance is set by past performance and projections (eg age, health, scheme fit, continuing improvement etc.). X’s original contract was light on salary and heavy on bonuses. I suspect this was the Agent looking after the agent so he could say to other clients “l git X the biggest CB contract” and not looking after X’s interests i.e. a desire for more salary/guarantees.
Actually, they the team have all the leverage. This shows in how team friendly this contract is. It may end up being the boiler plate contract for all future new and re-negotiated contracts.
Well, the thing is, during the trade request, Xavien's his side (him and his agent) stated that they put forward proposals that were team friendly prior to the trade request. Now, granted, nobody except for the parties involved in the negotiations know if that is true or not. But, considering that Noah Igbinoghene was struggling in camp and the best performing corner (aside from Byron Jones) was Needham, I'd imagine the prospect of having the latter opposite of Jones played a role. But, as it is, it doesn't matter. It seemed like both sides walked away happy and Xavien is still in Miami.
Not to beat a dead horse, but the Saints released Latavius Murray five days before the season started because he wouldn't restructure his contract for less money. They could easily have handled this months ago but decided now would be a better time to leverage him. If you think that players who hold out like X did are bad for "breaking their deals", then you should also be indignant for how the NFL does business. X saw the handwriting on the wall and was valuable enough to secure his bag. Other players clearly are not in position to secure their situation.
