If they are doing a total teardown and 3-4 year rebuild maybe, but tbh I'd probably keep both unless a massive offer comes in. You need some stability and veteran presence. Both can be big pieces if the rebuild is intended to be shorter term.

They're probably looking at a 95 to 100 loss season next year with those two.

Heyward would have been traded if he was any good. Not surprising you didn’t get a haul for Bryant or Rizzo. If the Mets had more mid level prospects you probably wouldn’t have gotten PCA either. Teams stopped giving stud prospects for rentals a few years ago. I was kinda surprised Contreras and Hendricks weren’t moved though.

Agreed. I’d be surprised if they’re Cubs by next year. May as well get more prospects and continue developing players while cutting payroll.

Yeah, Heyward is a Cub for life. His contract is an anchor that will tie him there through 2023.

As for the prospect deal, its especially painful as a Cubs fan to keep seeing that we were the last team to give away major hauls in the other direction (2016 & 2017) and now we can't get anything back when we're on the other side. It makes rebuilding look like a huge task, but it is what it is. The free agent class this coming Winter looks really poor too, for that matter.

As an amusing side note, the Cubs and Nationals traded away a combined 16 MLB players over the last few days. The two teams face off to start a 3-game set tonight. As really the only option, both teams have called up a bunch of guys from AAA to fill the holes on the roster, and its really going to look like a minor league game for the most part.

Ya after that Torres deal teams really stopped giving high end prospects for rentals. This Fa class is good for middle infield not much else IMO.

The next year, the Cubs traded their top two prospects to the White Sox for Jose Quintana. So, that might have been the last one. Boo

Which is funny because it bought them a WS flag. Meanwhile, after a hot start, Torres is now not looking that great with streaky hitting and poor fielding.

This and the Heyward deal were killers man. Not sure what happened to Quintana, he was really good with the Chisox and fell off dramatically almost as soon as he went across town. The entire staff kind of disappointed from that point going forward, somewhat excepting Hendricks who has been mostly consistent but has had a few issues and poor streaks of his own.

That inability to be consistent at either pitching or hitting wrecked them. It seems like everyone peaked the year they won the Series and just couldn't live up to it. Bryant, Rizzo, Lester ... never the same.

DeGrom taking a few more weeks off. Mets better hope this doesn't turn into a TJ.

They started really slow in 2017. So called WS Hangover. I'm not sure if that was it or not. They were around .500 until late July before they turned it on. They were just outclassed by the Dodgers in the NLCS.

2018 was really when it all went South, though. Bryant injured his wrist diving back to third, of all things. He's honestly never been the same since. Arrieta and Lester started to decline, and the overall amazing defense slid a few clicks.

From that point on, the pitching basically went away other than Hendricks, and none of the bats ever progressed. They sucked at hitting with men on base the whole run, its just that they were awesome at taking walks, hitting home runs and wearing the other team out and taking advantage late in games when they were at their best. But they were never actually good hitters.

Agreed. Jake had TJ in the minors when he first converted to pitcher (he was a SS at Stetson), that’s why he took to so long to get to the majors. IMO it’s just arm issues because he’s throwing so many sliders this year.

Ya he couldn’t hit a lick as a shortstop. Which is funny cause now he’s a pretty good hitter as a pitcher.

He's a really good hitting pitcher in MLB The Show (the video game). I hit around .300 with him one season - mostly singles of course.

More importantly, he's also my favorite pitcher to use in the game. His combination of stuff, pitch selection and windup/timing/motion are perfect for my style.

Just some comments on the trade deadline..

i love Rizzo on the Yankees… i dont love Gallo on the Yankees. Gallo is such a typical yankees move.. really, they already have two bats like him. All it did was increase their strikeout ratio.

they should have targetted Frazier instead. They need guys that can actually get on base consistently.. setup stanton and judge

not sure what Frazier brings to the padres in the short term with Tatis out.

i feel bad for cubs fans, but the good news is theyll be able to rebuild real quick with all their assets. It was a firesale but the cubs are not the marlins, they definitely got money to spend.

i gotta say i love bryant on the giants..

Can anyone tell me who the Field of Dreams nonsense is supposed to appeal to? It just seems like such a waste of time to me.

Yikes, it's been a rough go. Which makes it strange that they are going to be in next years Field of Dreams game (against the Reds). Usually you want *good* teams to play each other, like the Yankees and White Sox this year.

That said, it was amusing to watch the Padres of all teams grab Arrieta ... who promptly gave up like 5 in an inning and deuced out injured.

Locally, everyone is grumpy that Miguel Cabrera didn't hit HR 500 during the Tigers homestand, but they walked and hit him several times.

As far as the game in Iowa, that's where the Cubs AAA team has been for decades, and there are lots of Cubs fans there due to the large footprint of the team, WGN, ect. They're also a good ratings draw.

It was originally leaked back in Spring Training that the Cubs would be in the 2022 game. I've been amused that all of the media are saying that no one knew before recently. But I don't imagine that MLB expected that they would sell off absolutely everyone and start over, or be as bad as they are now.

I don't have a strong rooting interest in this WS. Just watching because its the WS, mostly.

But also, as they pointed out on the FOX broadcast, these games in Atlanta might be the last we ever see without the DH. And for me, that means the last "real" baseball games I'll ever watch. And that's really sad.

Congrats to the Braves. Now we'll see if the offseason really begins, or if the players and teams are at a standstill expecting a work stoppage.

As for the offseason the Mets are already scheduling meetings with Kris Bryant. Makes sense since he’s one of the few big name FA not tied to pick compensation that would cost NYM pick 14.

Syndergaard and Conforto were given Qualifying Offers…Conforto rejected his. Syndergaard had previously said he’d accept it which makes sense since he’s thrown 2 whole innings the last 2 years and he will still be under 30 next offseason.

Very curious what this offseason will look like with a new CBA and ownership now having a year under its belt. Could start by finding someone who wants the GM and President of Baseball Operations roles since Alderson is transitioning to the business side full time once we do that.

Good luck with KB. Its too bad that injuries completely wrecked his potential. He hasn't been fully healthy since mid season, 2017. He's still a good player though. I'd absolutely keep him at 3B rather than moving him around.

Cubs fans and writers all desperately want the team to reconnect with Nick Castellanos. He would be an ideal piece to build around. National media all thinks that the completely pass on any impact free agents, sign players who aren't any good instead, and choose to suck. I guess we'll see what happens.

They started the offseason by claiming Wade Miley from the Reds and penciling him into the starting rotation even though he's best served as a long reliever. He's had an ERA above 5 in five of the past eight seasons, and turns 35 this week. But somehow they think he's going to turn it around!

The appeal to the Mets and Bryant would be that he can shift to LF when Brett Baty or Mark Vientos are ready which should be soo.

He's fine in LF. Wasted as a defender there, though. My feeling is that you might as well put your worst defender out there and use the player with a good glove at 3B. I'm not familiar with what the Mets overall situation is at third, other than Villar played there a lot this past season.

So if you remember last offseason when we were talking Mets and Cubs…I actually felt like Vientos was a little better prospect than Baty. But Baty took a significant leap particularly the 2nd half of the year and in the Arizona Fall League in both power and plate discipline to the point where a call up in the 2nd half of 2022 seems likely. Vientos is a really good prospect as well and like Baty is best suited at 3b.

    https://www.bleachernation.com/cubs...lly-expanded-playoffs-modestly-revised-draft/

MLB proposes some signifigant changes to the playoff format. I'm not sure I like adding that many teams to the playoff field. Five per league seems fine. But I have been a big fan of the top seed getting a bye for a long time. It only seems fair. Winning 100 games in the regular season and then potentially losing in a short series to someone who won 85 just feels wrong. That's basically what happened to my Cubs in 2008.

It feels surreal having Jake and Max 1-2 in our rotation. Looks like we will be winning a lot of 2-0/3-1 games after losing Baez. Hopefully Uncle Steve isn’t done spending (doesn’t sound like he is)! Excited for Marte too as he’s a player I’ve liked for a long time and NYM has needed a true CF since Beltran. And Canha is a sneaky one…he’s 4th among AL OF’s in WAR over the last few years. #LFGM :butthead:

I like Canha a lot too. A little old (33 next season) since he got a late start as a major leaguer, but he has a solid bat and can play a lot of different spots. Like a B version of Ben Zobrist.

Jealous of the Mets willingness to spend!

Jealous no more…you signed Stroman 3/71m

You will like his competitiveness but hate his Twitter account. Guy can’t shut up. Takes the ball every 5th day but only goes 5 innings per start. He’s a love hate guy.

We have a long rebuild ahead of us. Maybe only two positional players who even might be long term answers. Looks like they have ho desire to extend catcher Wilson Contrares, and will end up trading him for pennies on the dollar, just like Bryant, Rizzo and Baez.

Now at least we have two starting pitchers, and are probably going to end up starting several guys who belong in long relief. In the end, I wonder if Stroman will even be around by the time the Cubs are competitive again.

3rd year is a player option so I’d bet no on Stroman. But he’s been a part of losing teams before so he will deal with it I guess since he wanted money over everything apparently
