UGH... hate to see one of the other top six getting better while LFC is stuck in neutral, but it is what it is. I wish him nothing but the worst

Belgium's old, slow, 3 in the back finally cost them. As did the inability to make the last pass on the attack, and the failure to attack in numbers compared to the way Italy was able to...

As well as Italy played, they still reverted to the traditional Italian diving team at the end of the game!

Immobile's Immaculate recovery after he realised Italy had scored when he was dying on the pitch...embarrassing.

It was a great game though, pretty much end to end. The other quarter-final today, not so much. Backs to the wall defending by Switzerland, and Spain reverting to their earlier tournament form of not being able to score.

They've always been my least favorite European team for this reason! Close 2nd is Portugal, which always reverts to hacking when they're losing...

What a game. Italy played amazingly well against Fifa No. 1 seed. Fully deserved that win. Spain next.

Also lets all pretend that only Italy resort to dives and embellishments, whatever makes you feel better about disliking them. Immobile was shameful though, me and family were calling him a number of bad names for that before the goal. Every player, club and country does it though - that's the sport these days.

I like this highlight from the game as well.

You don't think Portugal hacks when losing?

Check out their games against the USA and South Korea at the 2002 World Cup, their game against Germany at the 2014 World Cup, and even their game against Germany in these Euros...

If you look up hacking the dictionary you see a photo of Pepe.:2guns:

As for todays games, I thought Roberto Martinez got it all wrong vs Italy. He played a 343 but it was really a 523. Is Macca going to give him the same guff he gave Southgate for playing too defensive? Did Martinez not watch the Ita Aus game? Belgiums front three were way too isolated for the majority of the match. Now give Italy credit. They can only play their style. And if u arent going to press them thru the midfield and they are going to get on top of u with their full backs. They get rewarded for playing aggressively. They lose possession and they win it right back.

should be really interesting vs Spain. Could be an instant classic. And i hope we are talking about each teams skill rather than their theatrics

give the Swiss credit. They made it interesting. Michael Oliver sadly affecting the game with a straight red. At this stage u just cant do that. Terrible for the Swiss. Think they might have won it in regulation had the red card not been given. Their effort reminded me if Croatias run many years ago.

I like Italy, to me they're the best team in the tournament and should win it if they play at their best in the next two games. Immobile was ridiculous though, but you're right that they're not the only team that will try to milk the ref for free kicks and cards.

The double standards from commentators here is shameful, you often here them say "he wouldn't get away with that in the EPL/SPL", which is nonsense, you see the same almost every game from every nationality of player.

I remember, in particular for me as a Hearts fan, one of our Lithuanian players at the time was playing against Scotland and dived (it was blatant) to try and get a penalty, and he was then almost hounded out of Scotland afterwards. In one of the next games, a Scottish player did the same thing, nothing said apart from something like he was being "clever".

The theatrics have spread throughout the world, true. One would think with VAR it would be not as blatant. But until the FAs do something more harsh to combat it , it will never go away. I mean the Italian gk being fouled really by his own player (called on Witsel) was pretty bad. If anything Witsel was fouled.

but if u want to go back and talk about how it all started many years ago, my Italian friend here can give us a lesson.

Spinazzola out for Italy with an achilles. Thats a big loss IMO. He has been a real factor for them in their attack and freeing up Insigne.

Denmark counter has been lethal. Going up one early on a suspicious corner call has been big.

im not expecting CR to come back. But having just said that a clear opportunity.

Not a fan of the English lineup. Both Rice and Phillips are on yellows. Why start them both? Its odd. I do like them going four at the back. Sancho has barely played and you start him now? I like the formation. But id rather see Grealish than Mount who has done nothing. At least its Sancho instead of Foden on the wing.

4-0 is a just result. England dominated in that second half. Ukraine really did have a left down after giving up the 2nd goal so early in the second half. Back to Wembley and a shot at the finals against an inspired Danish side. It won't be easy. A lot of pressure being the favorites in that match. And a keeper who is capable of the miraculous. I would expect England to stay with four at the back and not revert back to the 343. It's really a minor thing though, the formation. It's all about the mindset of Luke Shaw at LB and Kyle Walker at RB, do they go for it or stay back. Shaw in the first half today was a bit defensive at times. England are yet to concede and yet to trail in any match so far. So we haven't seen them go "offensive" yet.

England took care of business. Expected to win and they did, convincingly, although Ukraine showed something before halftime. Denmark will be a tough game but England should see their way to the finals.

Spain with an interesting lineup change vs Italia today. I'll be watching it later, so no comments till then I'm afraid :wink2: . But the change for Spain is that they really haven't got a true #9 as I'm going to call him Olazabal () is probably not a striker? This means Spain may high press Italy and if they do, we could be on for a cracker of a match. If they don't, it could be a snoozer, very tight affair with neither team taking any chances till way later in the game. I'm hoping for the cracker... but I fear the snoozer/drama with each team looking to draw fouls and penalties near or inside the box. The lineup suggests Spain are willing to take a risk and go all in. If they do, I could see them pulling the slight upset. 2-1, or 3-2? Classico!

While it's halftime in the Spain-Italy game, just wanted to say about a couple of things I've really liked about this tournament.

The refs have let the game flow a lot more, not being fooled quite so often and stopping play for fouls when one player collapses to the ground at the least little touch by an opponent.

And VAR has been, in the main, very well used in the tournament. Decisions have been made and communicated quickly when reviewed and haven't held up play for long. A issue that the EPL in particular seems to have. They need to learn from how VAR has been used in the Euro's, and in the World Cup to be fair, where it was also used better than the EPL do too.

Fantastic game. Neither team deserved to lose, but especially Spain who created and probably had the best of the chances. End to end play for most of the game though and could have been 3-3 or more instead of finishing 1-1.

I had a feeling when I saw Morata go up for his penalty, he just looked nervous and not confident at all, and so wasn't surprised with his weak penalty. Terrible for him though, even though he scored the equalising goal, he's missed so many chances for Spain throughout the tournament that he'll probably get a hard time in Spain for it.

Hope the game tomorrow is as exciting.

I fully expect England to take care of business in regulation.. 2-0 victory. Denmark had a great tournament but England is an overwhelming mismatch.

Luis Enrique got it all right for the match in terms of strategy. He can only do so much, the players have to finish. And they didn't do that except for a fantastic goal from Morata / Olmo. For me, Olmo has been brilliant and a joy to watch. He has to be on the all Euro starting eleven. BUT, he can't finish a goal for the life of him. And between him and Olaryzabal (sp?), they missed golden opportunities. Morata and Moreno supposed to score too, to be fair.

Italy after conceding the goal looked to be playing for penalties. And why wouldn't they in looking at those pens??? Holy wowzers... As an England supporter I would have preferred to play Spain in the potential final due to familiarity of their players in England (I dunno, half the Spanish team plays in England?). For Italy, I can only think of Jorginho that plays in the EPL (there may be a couple others I'm not thinking about). So the familiarity of the player vs player match up would have been a help for England. But that's not to say they can't beat Italy. But of course, lets take care of Denmark first. It's not going to be easy. I have mad respect for several of those Danish players.

What did Spain get right today? Well, they pressed for one thing. They really made Jorginho uncomfortable. he couldn't settle into the game the way he wanted, the way he has for most of the tourney (except for parts of the Austria match). The Italian GK at HT had touched the ball more than the Italian MF. And that's what you want, he's not a good passer of the ball  Italy looked their most threatening when their LB Emerson could get up field and help in the attack. But that was few and far between. I like the matchup of Kyle Walker vs Italy's pace. But Chiesa on the other side is quite the player. He'd be a threat for a spot on my Euro XI. But Italy's strikers don't scare me. Immobile looks old and slow. Berardi seems to be lacking form. I think they would be the favorite vs England, slightly. :wink2:

Looks like the same England lineup that faced Ukraine except for Saka coming back for Sancho. so a 4-2-3-1, with Mount in that central role under Kane with Sterling and Saka out wide. As I mentioned previously, it's more about Shaw getting forward into the attack with a sprinkling of Walker on the other side. Walker will have to be mindful on the counter, so he's a quasi third CB if you will. Denmark look mostly unchanged from their last match. They'll be most dangerous on the counter and on set pieces. I don't think England will have their usual success on set pieces, it's pretty much a stale mate there. Can England create enough in the final third? I suspect we'll see a lot of Denmark with 5 at the back to watch for Saka/Sterling behind their back three... We shall see.

    Nervous.

Deserved win for England. I thought a lot of people were unjustly writing Denmark off beforehand, and for 60 mins or so it was a fairly even game, but from then on England dominated. The subs the Danish manager made around the 60 minute mark seemed to take the Danes out of the game they were playing and they didn't carry the same threat. They were pushed back and back by England and were defending deeper and deeper, and it was only a matter of time before England scored. Bit of luck for the penalty, which was pretty soft, but they deserved the winner.

Should be an interesting final. I still have Italy as the favourites, but not by much, especially with the game being at Wembley. Denmark did put England in trouble tonight (for the first 60 minutes) with their counter-attacks, and they'll see more of that from Italy too.

Marginal penalty for Sterling. I dont care. Kane should have had a pen though so it equals out. He is fortunate to get the rebound on the aweful pen he took. Deserved probably. Looked the more likely to score.

sunday is going to be fun. First time in the final for me. Im not THAT old. 1966.
