    So another one year deal.

There was talk about Howard wanting more money, but is McCourty really a replacement, even for one year??

News was that NO wanted to trade into the top 10 for a CB but had no takers. Clearly they are willing to part with picks. Question is what would it take and would it be worth it for us..
Edit: I personally don't think mccourty is enough to replace X at all, and don't by any means think this signals a trade, but I like that they're creating contingency plans if contract talks fail.

    Saints cannot afford X's salary.

IMO probably just a depth signing, and may even be more to replace McCain than play CB. If anyone is to replace X, we should hope it's Noah - cheap salary for the next 4 years. Hoping he takes a big leap this year with our other young guys.

Xavien is signed through 2024... we have no reason to negotiate anything right now, he needs to lace up his cleats and relax... after the 2021 season we can talk... maybe make the remainder of his salary guaranteed... but we arent going to be paying top dollar for a 32 year old cornerback in 2024..

Isn't X already paid an insane amount of money? I would guess that the MCcourty signing is more about depth and flexibility than anything else. He may not actually play a whole lot. Noah I, is the player that I think all eyes will be on. We may be looking at a potential bust with him if he doesn't start making things happen this season. I think the MCcourty signing is more insurance with that than it is with X.

Look. X is worth every penny he makes and then some. May be the best corner we've ever had in Miami but I'm going to take a page out of the classic Belichik playbook here. I look at trading him before this contract is over when he is around 30. Get something for him before we get nothing. In the meantime, give him a raise if you need to, make his salary guaranteed.

McCourty is a good depth signing. Inexpensive, experienced depth.

I'm gonna come out here and say something controversial. This roster is starting feel oddly constructed, and I do not see why a DB or a TE would sign with this team.

I just look at those two positions and think to myself that it would be next to impossible to crack this roster at those positions. Take this signing. I am not even sure that he winds up making the team. We have so much young talent, and if there is anyone playing anywhere close to McCourty's level, I would much rather have them on the team. You could probably stash them on the bench and give them limited reps to the elevate their skill.

Some of these moves feel odd.

Well I saw some news yesterday that McCain is going to be cut. That opens up a spot there, but yeah the DB room certainly is crowded. Maybe security here as well if X and the team can't come to terms. Heck, maybe there's a potential June 1 deal in place for X as well which may explain the teams desire to add more DB's.

Maybe also Flores knows McCourty and is giving him a shot. Maybe he sticks here, maybe he doesn't but gets an opportunity to show in camp and preseason that he's healthy and can still play which can lead to him landing elsewhere if we cut him. Could just be Flores doing him a favor and McCourty can likely help out our young guys here too.

I don't know if we can look at Noah as a bust just yet. It didn't look good last year at times, but he's young and was put in a pretty tough spot early on last year. as a rookie with no experience, no preseason etc. etc. He's got alot of work to do, but I just think given his age it's too early to label him a bust even after this season. Unless it's catastrophically bad; then yeah...

Okay, I think that the first idea that you threw out there makes a lot of sense. If X was on the move, signing McCourty would make a ton of sense. I will throw another log onto that fire, and say that I would not exactly feel comfortable if I was Noah I. Like I get that it has been a year, and he was a first rounder, but it is pretty clear that the Phins have zero issues with moving off a guy in just a year. Also, we signed numerous guys that could play slot. So with either of those scenarios, I see McCourty as making sense.

But your second idea I was not so confident in. I think that McCourty has certainly regressed, but by no means is he a bad player starving for a chance at this point in his career. I almost think that a guy like him would hold off and wait. One of two things will inevitably happen. A team will have a key starting DB get injured in camp/preseason, or a team will realize that a younger player, likely a rookie, that they had penciled in as their starter is not ready to play. For McCourty, a situation like that almost certainly dictates that he will get the job. With Miami, I would actually kinda be surprised if he made the team - unless someone goes.

    Ugh don’t like this.
Flores obsession with Patriots guys from his days there is growing old.

I think this is like the 14th guy they’ve signed and that does not include other guys they tried to sign.
How many of them have worked out? Rowe and Karras (for one year)?
