Stupid pick in a long line of stupid picks. I’m ready to move on from Chris at this point. Starting to feel like the 2013 draft that was supposed to be franchise defining and we pissed our own legs.
This was the worst pick so far for us on paper. He may be the next great TE I dunno, but we didn't need a new TE or if we did we have the BEST ONE available to us but decided we didn't covert that enough to stay at 3!!! We need a RB, and Center and I can't help but feel this was a colossal whiff and wasted pick when better talented needed positions were available. Maybe we trade up and grab someone else today and get a need!! Man what a downer for the evening.
Outside of Liam, I don’t really like any part of this draft or really last years 1st round. Hope I’m wrong but at this point I’m not buying it.
While the kneejerk reaction may be that he is a Giesikie replacement, it may be more that he is Smythe's replacement. We aren't paying big bucks for 2 TEs, so while it's not an immediate need, it's a forward-looking move. Personally, I'd have gone with a more pressing need, and Ill admit I don't know much at all about this guy, but hopefully he has a decent year. He's the first of our picks that I don't really expect to see a lot of playing time.
that’s fine in later rounds but when good players are there at major positions of need, I don’t understand this move. Or really most of the moves this draft
The rest of the draft is pretty self-evident, I'm not sure what you mean by that. I think we may need to live with the idea that perhaps what we consider needs aren't really considered needs by the team. I don't like or agree with that evaluation, but I don't call the shots.
What I’m considering is Grier has been hit or miss on first round picks and seems to not care about players who can stay healthy. We now have 3-4 WR’s, our starting QB and our OLB who have injury histories.
In terms of being "hit and miss" I'm not sure how you can say that at this point. The injury thing is a red flag to me, but I've heard that the front office and coaches have a lot of faith in the training staff. We shall see, but I think declaring guys like Waddle to be injury prone is beyond hasty. Established dudes like Parker are another story, but also wasn't a Grier pick.
Harris bust. Wilkins is below average. Tua had to get pulled in favor of a backup QB so our offense could move and also missed another game due to injury. Jackson was 75/79. His best 1st round picks aren’t on the team anymore and the jury is out on the players he selected with the draft picks we got to replace them.
I learned early on not to get into an argument with an idiot because they’ll bring you down to their level and beat you with experience. Have a good night sir
Yes Miami wants to use tight ends. Gesicki is getting resigned. Smythe is gone. This guy will make nickels and is probably better than Smythe. Makes sense to me.
Geisiki only played about 63% of offensive snaps last year. Geisiki was lined up in the slot 66% of the time he was on field. (Highest of any Tight end in 2020) Math on that... Geisiki was lined up as an inline tight end only 20% of Miami offensive snaps. There are lots of inline snaps available, because Geisiki is basically a slot receiver and tight end in name only. I don’t know anything about this kid. It stands out that his hips look really tight and inflexible on the highlights. But he did produce and seems like a really smart dude. Hopefully he is a blocking machine and can get off the line, Because with Waddle and Geisiki in the slot... he isn’t getting any gravy pass catching/slot snaps anytime soon.
Here is what I don't get about the pick. We have Gesicki who is a really solid player. Shaheen has carved out a nice little niche and just got an extension. We have Smythe who is serviceable. We did sign Cethan Carter for special teams. I can't fathom us carrying five tight ends. Even for seems like a lot to me. I'm also not sure if anyone is trading for Smythe. Perhaps this may mean that they do not envision giving Gesicki a big contract after seeing what the market value for tight ends were. I'm not exactly sure how this is gonna work out.
who the hell cares if you don‘t understand the move...Miami was lacking a truly functional TE in this offense.
This is a sports forums. I was voicing my opinion. If people didn’t do that this would be a ghost town and boring.
I know not everyone cares about the draft “experts” but I’ve now read/heard Pioli, Kiper and McShay say Really good things about Long. McShay called him the steal of the 3rd and Pioli said he was one of his favorite players in the draft. Feeling a lot better about this pick. Allows us to sign one of our TE’s next year, let the other walk and hopefully have a tandem that will be tough to cover.
I have a hard time believing he's a Gesicki replacement, but with Gesicki's deal coming up soon it may not be a stretch really. I think the option of having both Gesicki and Long on the field together though is interesting to think of. It's not like this would be a new concept for a coach coming from NE.... think Gronk/Hernandez. At the end of the day I'm surprised to see the backlash to this pick. Last year so many said that Tua needed weapons to be successful. He's been given 3 weapons this offseason now already. Fuller, Waddle & Long to pair with Gesicki and Parker, Williams and the others. So... we've given Tua two new speedy WR's an upgrade at TE2, maybe even TE1 long term and some more help on the OL with Eichenberg. I wish we added a RB somewhere in there too (I dont see much in Doaks) but this is a passing league so that's where the focus has been. This was a draft for the QB position IMO and they've added some nice tools for him to use.
Mike Gesicki doesn't really play tight end. He plays a very limited and very curated number of snaps where he's creating a gap in the formation. Because of these limitations, you've got to give a lot of snaps to your other tight ends on the roster- you had 800 something snaps that went to Smythe, Shaheen, and Myarick, which is more snaps than you gave Gesicki and is essentially a full-time starting role. At a certain point when you're talking about holes in your offense, a big one is that you're giving a starting workload to tight ends who are #2/#3 quality. That's what Long is meant to ameliorate.
*runs to google* I can honestly say I've never heard that word in my almost 40 years. I still feel this means the impending end of Gesicki. I mean, surely his role will be even more limited now with the additions of Waddle and Fuller no?
I do not. I think Miami does what Seattle did when they made their Superbowl runs when Wilson was super cheap. Have an overload of talent. His role might be limited, but he will still get a bunch of yards and touchdowns and big plays.
I think it is one of two things. A - You're right. He's coming to replace Gesicki. B - The lie was actually the truth this time. Chris Grier always says that he is a BPA guy; however, it just so happens that the BPA is always a player at a position that we need. Helluva coincidence if you ask me ;-) Maybe this time Long truly was the best player on their board, and they took him. There might be truth to that because he was a third round pick, so odds are, there is no master plan to replace Gesicki because there was no certainty that we could get him.
I don't know if there's a scenario in recent history where a team has taken a more of an BPA-at-all-costs stance than Igbinoghene while you had Jones/Howard.
I don't think so. To me, it means the end of pretending that Gisecki is not a slot receiver. Long is a true TE and he also led the league in receptions, yards, etc. for TE's last year, so I'm no longer upset about this pick. I have a feeling that he's going to be a great fit and he'll contribute for a very long time in Miami.
