Could the Dolphins lack of aggression in FA at positions of need be related to a cap conscious approach because they're hoping to snag Watson?

Does anyone have the cap hit numbers?

I recall reading something like the Dolphins would be able to get Watson and one high profile FA.

There are lots of other possibilities, of course, just pondering whether or not they might be settling on one single FA target since they're hoping to accommodate Watson...?

EDIT- Here's what I've found after a quick search:
    SI.com
"Should the Dolphins opt to cut Van Noy, which seems the most likely outcome at this point, they will have $37.1 million in cap space...

Watson's contract dictates he counts for a $15.94 million cap hit in 2021, which is set to increase to $40 million in 2022.

As such, theoretically, the Dolphins would be able to accommodate Watson's salary this season whilst also looking at other potential free agent targets at positions of need such as wide receiver as mentioned on the podcast... "

Miami Herald had this projection in January:

"But here’s the bad news: Tagovailoa’s Dolphins cap hit — which would be $6.9 million in 2021 if he remains a Dolphin — would be a $14.7 million Dolphins dead money hit if he’s traded to Houston (or traded anywhere)."

"But to acquire Watson, absorb Tagovailoa’s big dead money hit, sign a receiver of the quality of Robinson or Kenny Golladay or Will Fuller - and have a little space to take into the season - there will need to be tough decisions beyond simply the five hypothetical cuts above (McCain, Fejedelem, Grant, Hurns, Wilson).

Maybe Miami will need to go very cheap with a backup QB, draft a punter instead of paying Haack, find a No. 3 defensive tackle and No. 3 safety in the draft and/or maybe restructure one or two veteran contracts and sign only backup linebackers at the minimum to conserve cap space to sign a receiver.

So if the Dolphins traded Tagovailoa, the 3rd and 18th picks for Watson, there is a way to add Watson, absorb Tagovailoa’s big dead money hit and sign a receiver of Robinson’s caliber. But it won’t be easy and it will hurt your depth somewhat.

One thing this doesn’t factor in: any restructured deal for Xavien Howard, who wants more money. That’s going to be very difficult to accommodate from a cap standpoint. He’s signed through 2024."

"Watson’s Dolphins cap hits beyond 2021 would be $35 million (2022), $37 million (2023), $32 million (2024) and $32 million (2025). So Miami could have significant salary cap challenges beginning in 2022, requiring tough decisions.

And here’s another thought: It would save Miami $7.9 million against the 2021 cap to give the Texans picks 3, 18 and Miami’s first-rounder next year instead of 3, 18 and Tagovailoa. That would also solve the Dolphins’ backup QB situation, though Miami at some point would likely want to trade Tagovailoa for an early round pick if Houston trades Watson to Miami but passes on Tua."

And this right here is why I have been saying I don't want them trade for him. They would have a 1 year window (2021) before they get into cap hell, have to gut the roster to pay him, and then not have enough higher draft pick to help replenish the roster with quality players. This team would end up looking like Houston does right now. No thanks. I'd rather they stay the course and continue building towards a long term annual contender. If he were to openly say he would be willing to restructure to a more team-friendly contract ala Tom Brady, then maybe, otherwise hard pass.

those are numbers are a bit off. it's $10.5M this year, $35M in 2022, $37M in 2023, and $32M in 2024 and 2025...the prorated signing bonus of $5.4M each year for the next 4 years doesn't count against his new team's salary cap.

Well, the good news is that Watson should be traded within the next week if anything's going to happen. At this point, the only thing I'm really rooting for is keeping him out of NY or NE.

looking at his statement he says he wasn't aware of the lawsuit and the complaint but later says they asked for a 6 figure settlement. How can you not be aware of the lawsuit when you are aware of a settlement??? Whoever wrote the press release isn't very smart.

The national media seems to be determined to send him to the Jets. They badly want that market to have big games.

I agree with one point Hyde made - stay away from Clowney. Overrated as well as overpaid is a bad combination.

That means someone called him and said, "Hey, give me $100k." He said, "Ummm, no." Then that person went and filed a suit in court, which Watson didn't know about until recently. It makes perfect sense because that's how it works in the legal world.

I think the main reason I want to sign Watson is to prevent the Jets or Pats from signing Watson. Don't think the Pats can ink the deal with their spending/picks, but the Jets will vastly overpay because they're the Jets.

I'd love to see him in San Fran, Jax, Denver or the Carolinas though! Anywhere but the AFC East is 100% fine by me.

If this is a true, it would obviously take them out of the mix for moving up for a QB in the draft.

The Athletic's Joseph Person reports the Panthers "are locked" on acquiring Deshaun Watson.
Person quoted an executive with an NFL team that has closely monitored the quarterback market who said Carolina remains focused on trading for Watson, 25, who desperately wants out of Houston. Person said "Watson looks to be Plan A, B and C" for the Panthers and the team's owner, David Tepper. Person expected Tepper and the Carolina front office to be as aggressive as any team interested in landing Watson, with "three first-round picks the likely starting point" in trade talks. Carolina has $29.8 million in cap room after a series of roster cuts and the restructuring of Christian McCaffrey's and Shaq Thompson's contracts. The Texans remain dug in on keeping Watson, but it would seem the Panthers are among the favorites to acquire the QB if Houston relents.

If I needed a QB for the next 10-12 years the only one I’m taking over Watson is Mahomes.

No it wouldn't....Watson can only go to one team, and "trying to" sign him is not the same as signing him. It doesn't matter how all-in a team might be on him if he doesn't want to go there. If he goes to the Panthers though, then Denver and other franchises become more desperate.

Reports are saying the Bears offered 3 first round picks, a 3rd rounder and two starting caliber players to the Seahawks for Wilson and were rejected.

Obviously Wilson hasn't been as definitive as Watson in wanting out, but Watson's also a fair bit younger. Also keep in mind the Bears (and likely Seahawks) are considering those picks to be later in the round vs say, the #3 overall. :king: But it's something to keep in mind as teams apparently gear up their offers for Watson.

I wonder the timing of these allegations against Watson. I also wonder if this is why the whole FA thing has been slow as this threw a wrench in everyones plans. Could he get suspended? How much will it drop his trading price? Is there more urgency to get a trade in now? later? WTF is going on!!!!

Honestly dont see the Texans dealing Deshaun this offseason and theyre going to dare him to sit out.. its their right to do so, though would be frustrating for Texans fans.. but i think Deshaun and Houston are both gonna stand hard on it

He's running the Andrew Cuomo playbook. Let's see if Watson is suspended or he gets preferential treatment because he's a star.

On the cynical side, this could bring his asking price down. Especially if a suspension is on the horizon. They almost HAVE to move him now. But even though he's a talent do you want any piece of an "alleged" sexual predator?

There are some questions about those involved in these allegations. Until something is properly substantiated I wouldn't factor it in - particularly because there's no movement on him being traded yet.

Numbers in themselves don't mean anything. I haven't looked at the nature of the claims or evidence so I'm speaking with little knowledge of specifics, but a number doesn't necessarily mean any sort of strong case. Who is raising this? What's their relationship? etc.

Innocent until proven guilty is a thing for a reason. In terms of the league, they should at least know the basis of the claims before judging anyone and acting.

Number do mean something. If 10 people come forward and say yes he did it, then that starts to lean on the side of having some cred. Were at 3 right now. Granted they need to investigate, but you don't have a bunch of people come out against a powerful person or against a powerful entity such as the NFL typically if there isn't something there. We will see how it shakes out. But if they have texts like they said they do, if in fact they do, then it isn't looking so good from the 10,000 view.

Well, it could be a local massage pallor that he goes to, one woman tried to get paid, then others working there joined in for the cash grab. If that's the case, then 1 is the same as 10 to me.

Additionally, it's a massage pallor! I would imagine lots of guys get "excited" doing that....I wouldn't know because I've never been. I wouldn't know the protocols involved of what would define sexual harassment and what wouldn't, and I have a feeling that the truth would be somewhere in the middle between Watson and the initial accuser. As I said before, if there's 3-5 others that work there claiming the same thing after the fact, then I'm not really impressed by that for multiple reasons.

    1) If he sexually harassed 5 different women there, why wasn't he banned 4 women ago?

    2) Why wasn't a complaint filed? Why wasn't he arrested or at least questioned?

It just doesn't add up for me the way it's being reported. I'm guessing something inappropriate did happen with the first female but again, I believe the source and the profession also come into play here. I would imagine females in that profession get hit on hourly...not that it makes it right...but why aren't they suing everyone AND finding another profession?

I was willing to pay the price, but yeah 100% out for me too. There are just way too many women coming forward. The lawyer being buddies with the McNair family was kind of eye-raising to start, but it's looking like we could see double digit numbers of women accusing him of at least harassment if not outright sexual assault. Police are also now reportedly investigating.

He's become untradeable here imo - nobody is going to pay the price to get him with these accusations and potential league/police/legal ramifications hanging.

Will be interesting to see if teams circle back to Wilson.
