After first couple of games I was disappointed in the defence
9 weeks later I believe we are a 3 down stud MLB away from being elite!Another pass rusher wouldn't hurt but we can get away with what we have with this scheme.
The run D is the only weakness I see..We draw a team like the browns in the playoffs and that's a nightmare matchup for us.
Next year we find that guy.b

I agree, we need a badass MLB. Another Thomas, or a Bobby Wagner. With two first round picks in the draft, I still say that we should keep adding pieces to the defense with at least one of those picks.

Yeah, the D and special teams were a big reason for some of our wins. A few more pieces here and there and they can be dominant.

We drafted a bunch of defenders and added key free agents. Add to that, we've had interruptions and no preseason to either gain chemistry or determine a rotation. Furthermore, we're in year 2 of a foundational rebuild and the fact that we can point to one area on our defense as an area of opportunity is testament to the fact that we're into something good.

I hope we go as far a we can but IMO, we're playing with house money at other teams' expense in 2020. BTW: We can beat Cleveland because they'd have to pass eventually and I think Mayfield is the optimal QB for this defense to feast on. Beyond everything, we're still improving and I'm having a ball watching us every week. We are who we are at this point and not likely to flip the switch and become a good run defense so I have no doubt you're right about us improving this in the off-season.

Just based off of how our defense has performed by itself is enough to feel secure with Flores as our coach. I'm in no way saying we should ignore the offense or that we shouldn't get a grip on the QB position, but our defense is our strength and that is a testament to Flores and his coaching abilities. Like I said, address the offense for sure this offseason, but it'd be wise to keep adding a few chess pieces to this D. Make it elite!

I think we are a few players away from actually competing against top offenses consistently. That said we are well beyond where I thought we would be.

I know the common thought is to go heavy offense on this draft. While I think we need to address WR, RB, OL I also think you focus on your strength and make it stronger.

I think we need to find a MLB and draft Ogbah’s replacement assuming try to sign him to a long term contract in a low cap year.

we’re winning games with defense and special teams. Keep that the strength of this team and if we can even make our offense middle tier, we’re going to be a force to recon with.

I dont disagree with the overall premise and I dont necessarily think every pick has to be on offense.

That said, I do feel defense is a lot easier to draft later on or fill in FA than offense is. I'm a firm believer that a defense can scheme around talent issues while an offense has minimal options to do so.

The dynamic balance between offense and defense is such that a good offense helps keep a defense fresh by staying off the field. Not just that, but if we could go up by 10 or more earlier in games, it also makes the opponents' offense one dimensional and easier to defend. We definitely need to improve our rushing attack. I may be in the minority but I think we could have used Wilson a lot this season and possibly also Hurns. Our WR depth next season will be striking.

If we had an offense that could get 2-3 more sustained drives per game, our defense would be top 5 in most categories.

Earlier this year I also mentioned it's a shame Wilson wont be part of the roster.

I'm a big believer in going 5 deep at WR if possible and having Wilson/Grant as the #3 and #4 guys presents so many matchup problems for a defense.

If they put in the work Malcolm Perry and Lynn Bowden Jr both have a chance to be that guy in the slot. They need to learn the nuances of wide receiver but both have the quickness it takes to be good slot receivers.

Unfortunately, they are both probably two years away

I really like Perry so far. I'd like to see him get some throws in at some point on trick plays. He seems like a guy who might not be elite at any specific position but is deadly being moved around the field.

I always forget about Bowden Jr honestly but hopefully he can become something good for us as well.

I think I noticed about Perry is that he has elite quickness and the ability to change direction. If he learns how to run routes and how to sit in coverages, he can be a Julien Eidlmen/We Welker type of a player

I haven't seen as much from Bowden Jr. This is more of an assumption because he looks athletic. But he also needs to learn those things.

They can be gadget type players who run simple routes this year and next year. However, to be long term players in the NFL, they need to learn how to play the position, so that they can be really annoying.

I would just love to have one of the players that other teams are like, "****! How did he get so wide open?"

I sort of agree. I think they are finally getting to a point where they can really start grabbing guys who fit the scheme because there actually is a scheme.

That's exactly what I'd like too. I think we are really close to having all the pieces on offense. You know I'm not a big Tua fan but let's just assume he pans out and can distribute the ball to everyone.

You have Parker who will catch just about anything in bounds and near his body. Not great at quick separation but hes still a nightmare to defend if the QB can get the ball near him.

Then Williams who I'm hot and cold on. Some weeks he looks amazing and others he plays kind of small.

Grant/Perry/Wilson. Maybe Wilson doesnt stick and he is really who the roster spot of the WR we want replaces. That would be my guess, but Perry and Grant are matchup nightmares in open space.

So if you can add that guy you're describing I think the offense is about as loaded as you can hope for it to be at WR.

I'm really not sure where Bowden fits in but I think he sticks at least a few seasons. Maybe we end up carrying 6 WR?

You know this was the defense that Florez wanted Fitzpatrick to play in. He couldn’t see the vision. I wonder how much better this defense would’ve if he wouldn’t have been so selfish and bought in. Just a passing thought.

I mean I doubt Minkah is complaining right now given their record, but for sure itd be interesting to have an elite safety in this defense too. No disrespect to Rowe and McCain as they have both been playing very well, especially Rowe.

That said, if his head was just not in it, I'd much rather have the 2 we have now who have clearly bought into Flo's game plan than a diva. Fins up

    I couldn’t agree more.

An old adage that I first heard associated with the '85 Bears is, offence wins games, but defence wins championships.

Build the D right first and the O will follow.

Yes, we can continue to add necessary items to the RB and WR units, but let’s prioritise a top run-stuffer, preferably a leader too.
