Looking VERY big picture, good job by the Bears picking up the win vs the Bucs tonight. At 4-1, they're now highly likely to have a better record than the Fins or Texans. I think that Bucs probably end up with more wins by the end of the year, so Chicago taking this one was good.

This absolutely won't happen, but can you imagine if we somehow had the #1 and #2 pick lol

I can and have imagined that!

In 1992, the Colts ended up with picks #1 and #2 in the draft. They got #1 the old fashioned way, but going 1-15 in 1991. But they got #2 because during training camp in 1990, the Bucs traded them the pick for QB Chris Chandler. I've never really been able to understand the logic of the move from Tampa Bay's side, other then teams were more willing to trade picks and make bold moves back then.

I remember Chandler in the later stages of his career, but I was 2 when that trade happened. Was he ever THAT highly regarded? I mean obviously the Bucs probably didnt expect to be that bad with him, but still.

No, not really. He was a third round pick in 88, and started most of the season for Indy. His second year, he was injured and missed most of the season, and then the Colts and Falcons made a huge trade where Indy ended up with the first pick and took Jeff George as their presumptive franchise QB. So that made Chandler expendable, and TB gave up their first rounder two years later.

But he wasn't special there, and the Bucs traded him to the Cardinals in the middle of the next season. He spent a few seasons in Arizona as a sometimes starter, then one with the Rams, and then a couple in Houston after Warren Moon left, but before Steve McNair took over. Then he signed with the Falcons, where he had his longest and greatest stretch of success, and was their QB when they went to the Super Bowl under Dan Reeves. When they drafted dog killer, Chandler moved on to the Bears for a few years before Rex Grossman took over.

He basically was Ryan Fitzpatrick of the 90s, starting at times for seven different franchises.

If you remeber Steve Emtman and Quentin Coryatt you’ll also remember they didn’t end up helping the Colts that much. Emtman was good but injured and Coryatt was a bust.

I do. That was the first draft that I ever watched. But the fact that the players didn't pan out doesn't mean that the strategy was a poor one, or that it couldn't have been fantastic. Just horrendous luck on the part of the Colts.

I mean, in 1990, they draft one of the most gifted quarterbacks to ever play the game in Jeff George, but it doesn't work out because of his personality problems and their weak coaching. George generally had weak head coaches his entire career, and I think that he had someone stronger, he would have become a lot more than he was.

Then in 92, they basically just get as unlucky as you can. Entman got hurt his rookie year and was never healthy. Coryatt got hurt his rookie year too, and then was never really in a position where he had any help. Then they took DB Ashley Ambrose at the top of the second round, and he never became a starter for them in four seasons, but then went on to be a solid starter on other teams for eight seasons, well into his 30s.

They were also sort of the victims of the fact that while the 92 draft had a lot of solid guys in it, there weren't many super stars. But sometimes that happens. Imagine having the top two picks in 1989, and picking through Troy Aikman, Barry Sanders, Derrick Thomas, and Deion Sanders, all who went in the top 5.

I'll honestly pass on Aikman. He was the NFL version of Ken Dorsey at UM or Matt Leinart at USC in my eyes.

The Texans are taking it to the Jags, so the dream of them getting the #1 pick for Miami takes a HUGE hit.

Either way, we'll have two first round picks. Bundle them and get the first pick and get Trevor Lawrence

While it is only week 5, the Jets look like the worst team in the league. Best chance for that to change is they fire Gase and the team rallies for a couple of wins. If that happens, they may get some competition from the likes of Washington, the Giants and a few others (hopefully Houston).

Noone is trading Lawrence away if they are bad enough to get the #1 pick.

Looking at the 0 or 1 win teams ... the Bengals would probably trade. Maaaaaybe Philly if they really think Wentz can be saved by a better OL. The rest? Doubtful.

Fair enough about the Bengals I agree. I do think they eventually win a couple games though.

Philly might pass too you're right I wasnt considering them as potentially picking there.

With the Fins off next week, if the Lions and Broncos win, our own draft pick will move ahead of those teams, up from #14.

I never count on the Lions to win.

Ideally our pick will be #32 and the Texans pick will be #1.

I just looked at their remaining schedule and it's not tough or incredibly easy, but leaning more towards easy. I could see them going .500 or going on a run at sone point. If the Jags and/or Browns can steal one from them that will help out.

Cheering for a better draft position with our own pick is something I refuse to do this year, instead I'm going to cheer for it to go lower and lower, as close to 32 as possible.

Texans pick is another story and I hope it's #1 overall.

While we're on the bye, there's no harm in it. Not rooting for us to lose. Just for other teams to win.

Thought I would make a thread so that we can keep track of Houston and see how theyre taking of our best pick in the 2021 draft.

Houston right now is 1-5, and our draft pick currently sits at #7.

They have one of the worst defenses (both pass and rush) in the NFL and will be facing Aaron Rodgers this Sunday.

Also Tunsil has been quite turnstile this season. I see him giving up on some pass blocking assignments and getting Desean hit.

That could very well happen, if the owner decided to punt on 2020. Especially if they trade away other players before the deadline.

Doubt it since they dont own their pick and have no real incentive to lose more games.

If the Giants win tonight, they move from #3 down to #7, behind our first pick (for the time being). If the Eagles win, the Giants move up to #2 (for the time being) while Philly just moves down from #9 to #10.

Honestly, I'd prefer the Giants to lose. The Jets wont be 0-16 at the end of the year, they will sneak a game or two down the stretch. The more teams that have bad records to potentially cost them that #1 pick the better.

A fair point to be sure. There are positives and negatives in both directions. The more those current 1-win teams win, the greater the chance of the Texans pick being in the top 5. Imagine being able to trade down from that one for a haul if someone wants one of the QBs other than Lawrence.

That's actually something I hadn't considered. The Texans are interesting because they really shouldnt be as bad as they are this year. The rest if their schedule isnt that bad so I can definitely see them going on a little run at some point.

I'd love what you just suggested though. It would be a massive win for us.

I actually think the Texans schedule is really rough. I predicted before the season that they'd be sitting right where they are, looking at 1-6 after losing to the Packers this weekend. Then they have their bye, and don't play again until after the trade deadline. If they trade away a few valuable pieces, then things could snowball from there.

They get the Jags after the bye, but then play @Cleveland and host the Pats after that, and could very well be 2-8 at that point. And they still have two with the Colts after that, plus the Bears and another one vs the Titans. I think that 3-13 is very possible for them, even if they don't trade guys away and stay healthy. If they lose a few pieces, especially Watson? Look out below.

Funny that the games you listed are the ones I think they have a good shot in.

Not saying they will win them all, but I dont necessarily see them losing all of them either.

So, Atlanta stayed ahead of our first pick, but Detroit dropped below our second pick. Little bit of a wash with that one.

Whoever wins the game between the Chargers and the Jags will move ahead of our first pick as well.

So far, they're right where I expected them to be before the season started. They have their bye next week, so we'll see if they trade anyone of importance away before they play their next game at Jacksonville.

They are stuck - they traded away their second best player for a pittance. They handed out massive contracts to Watson and Tunsil (urgh). Aside from Watson they are old and slow, their defense is abysmal. Jesus christ Bill O'Brien did a number on that team. What possessed ownership to let him take personnel control will forever be a mystery.

Honestly, they need to unload Tunsil- they clearly can't afford him despite paying an insane bounty to us for the contract. It has to be one of the dumbest trades in the history of the NFL...three 1st rounders for a lineman? Tunsil could be the best lineman ever and it's still hard to justify- you don't need one elite lineman that badly and we learned that on the Suh deal.

That one move screwed them for at least 5+ years...

I honestly feel like we straight out robbed them in that trade and it's crazy we might have a top-5 pick from it (on top of the two from last season where we replaced Tunsil and got a starting slot CB). This 3rd pick is just icing on the cake since we've already clearly won in the trade.

Their original owner died about two years ago, and O'Brien basically took advantage of the power vacuum when he son took over. It looks like they finally figured out what was going on, but its too late.

That Hopkins trade was as almost as bad as the Tunsil trade. Moves like that can set you back a decade! Feels good to be on the side that wins for once!
