Right, the Dolphins had just went to the Super Bowl. Woodley was the starting quarterback but after he showed he wasn't cutting it any longer, it was time to make the switch. Same thing with Smith and Mahomes. I've already pointed out the dozens of #1 picked quarterbacks that weren't NFL ready. I've also pointed out the numerous reasons as to why they don't succeed. If you have a GOOD team, you can start a rookie right from jump street and he can usually make the transition to the NFL successfully. If you have a good team and a good quarterback, sitting behind that good starter is actually a GOOD thing for the rookie.
I thought that he did but wasn't sure. I'm not sure what you're getting at though. Who knows why Shula didn't start Marino from day one. He could have and should have though. Maybe he had some sort of loyalty to Woodley
I won't argue any of your points. But, do you actually think tua is learning anything watching Fitz? What's the purpose of it? Unless tua is still injured or he's not looking good in practice, there is no reason he shouldn't be playing. It's not like he's sitting behind Marino.
I don't know. That's what I'm saying. I don't know why he's not playing. At least Woodley led them (in some capacity) to the Super Bowl and actually played well enough for us to win. The defense lost that game. Fitz is not really that good and somehow Tua is riding the pine. I don't get it
Marino once said in an interview I watched that he learned a lot about playing at the NFL level from Don Strock, a career back-up. Now Fitzpatrick may not be this great barnstorming quarterback but that doesn’t mean he has nothing to teach Tagovailoa
Was Joe Burrow injured last year? No. Was Tua? Yes. Case closed. whether you like where he was drafted or not. They're being careful early because hes coming off an injury. Doesnt mean he's fragile, they're being cautious. They're not making the playoffs this year. Theres ZERO reason to be this upset about it currently.
So they drafted a QB coming off of a serious injury. Sounds like a stupid strategy to me. Do you remember Dante Culpepper? I personally think tua is gonna be a bust and would like to find that out sooner than later so we can move on from it
Well, I was around here when the starting quarterback was Dick Wood - who made the TinMan look like an acrobat. They replaced him with Rick Norton - who survived three years - barely! I think you are being impatient and that the coaching staff probably has a #ell of a lot more understanding of when a rookie quarterback should be put in the game than ANYONE typing on this board. We know nothing of how his injury is progressing in fully healing other than what the media (who of course are absolutely honest, completely knowledgeable about ALL matters football, and nonbiased!) are telling us. I would think that the medical staff and coaches know a lot more about that than we do. What you are calling for is more like throwing a sacrificial lamb to the wolves in the mad hope that we will not be embarrassed than bringing a formerly injured first round quarterback into play when we are VERY unlikely to even sniff the playoffs this year, and let him learn the PROFESSIONAL FOOTBALL game slowly as he is introduced to it through the season. I have seen far too many QB washout and never be mentioned again with what you are calling for than those who succeed by being introduced into the game with some form of rationale and patience behind it!
On Mahomes I actually disagree. His mechanics were some of the worst I've ever seen coming out of college. I dont know if he needed the whole year, but he is one QB I actually think benefited a lot by sitting. I agree 100% in general though that unless the circumstances are absolute crap most QB shouldnt be "ruined" even if it's a struggle at first. .
QB coming off injury the second time. We had our choice of injured QBs and chose the wrong one. It's possible we did with Tua, but we can't possibly know at this rate. Plenty of good QBs - even without injury - sit for a year before taking over. There is no magic formula, no single "right way" to do it. Have to let it play out for now.
I was hoping Tua would make it into the game in the 4th quarter last night when we were sitting on a 21 point lead....it felt like a pretty safe time to have his debut. Honestly, it's the only reason I watched the entire 4th quarter. Then we had that turnover just outside the redzone and I thought surely he was getting in there....but I guess it just wasn't meant to be.
I was a Junior in High School tuned into WIOD (I think!) listening to the opening game. Joe Auer's runback and the fact that I just possibly began to approach my Dad about the slight possibility of being able to ride down to Miami to see one of the early games on a Sunday afternoon. You'da thunk I asked for keys to Fort Knox! I had just turned 16 and he was never going to let me drive down US27 to get to Miami. So, it was me and my transistor radio in the window listening through the static. But, I heard that runback. Been hooked ever since!
Well my first year, I was 7 years old, just moved to Jacksonville Beach...grandfather was transferred to Mayport NS from Long Beach. Watched my first football game with him and saw the Dolphins. Loved dolphins and liked the colors. “Grandpa, look...Dolphins!!!” to which he replied, “That’s the biggest bunch of bullsh#t”. Bob Griese, Larry Csonka, Mercury Morris, Paul Warfield, Nick Bouniconti...little did I know I was watching history in the making. The undefeated 72 season and I’ve been hooked ever since
Wow! I listened to the Dolphins season by ARFRATS while on a tin can chasing the Bird Farm (aircraft carrier) around the Med. I was already a Dolphins fan from the opening kickoff of their first game ever. I lived in a little farming town in S. Fla. so I got it on my transistor radio. Yay! Joe Auer!!
Just because!! What did your grandfather do at Mayport? Was he attached to the base, or onboard one of the ships? If so, which one?
I wonder if this sort of thing will get Ross talking to Flores and Grier about why they haven't started their young QB...
I'm fine sitting Tua until further notice. It would be good to get him some experience sure, but I think the hip is still a worry. I think the team is scared and playing it safe. It's understandable. In this situation, taking it slow with Tua is a good approach.
At 1-3, and struggling to finish drives, Fitzy throwing another awful int...I think it is time to consider putting Tua in. I have argued that it is wise to wait, but at this point, there is no reason to wait. Let him learn of the field and let papa Fitz help him between series. You have to start to thnk about getting some of these rookie mistake out now so the team can be competitive next season.
If there is so much doubt about playing him , why draft him in the first place? The other teams who drafted QB's don't appear to be doing too badly.
Honest question to all the guys out there who do not want to start him. Would you be down with starting him in a month? I have a very hard time believing that he is completely lost in practice. Obviously, I am not there, and maybe that is the case. I just find it hard to believe. By all accounts, Tua is a great leader and a smart guy. I just cannot see him slacking off or being completely bewildered. Is he behind Fitzmagic. Of course! Fitzmagic is a Harvard educated journeyman who has played in multiple different systems. Tua may possible NEVER surpass Fitz in terms of knowledge of the game. So what can we garner from that? Nothing. Tua has attributes that could lead him to becoming a better QB than Fitzy. If you don't think that he will be ready in a month, I get that. I have no counters for you. But if you do think he could start in a month, how much better do you really think he could get in 30 days. I would say that he could get marginally better. A month aint gonna be a night and day difference. I really do think in 2 of our 4 games we would have faired better with Tua (NE and SEA). In those two games, we scored 1 TD. I really think that Tua would have gotten us into the end zone more than once in those two games. Check my post history. I was on the Herbert train the whole time, but I do not think that Tua will be horrible. I don't see him going out and throwing 4 INTS. I just don't see him being that guy. Right now, I have a hard time thinking that the difference isn't marginal. To all of you who think that he is learning on the sideline, I agree that he is probably doing a lot of growing on the sideline. That being said, I think it is also fair to ask, "How much is being on the sideline stunting his growth?" It just isn't getting live action. It is getting first team reps in practice. If Tua was starting, he would be getting considerably more snaps in practice. There is no doubt in my mind that those would help him out tremendously. Finally, to the people concerned about his health. I think the decision about whether or not he is healthy enough to play has already been made when we cut Rosen. If Fitz gets hurt, Tua is going into the game. There are no other QBS on our roster. Let's say Fitz has a season ending injury, are we gonna go sign Jake Ruddock and start him over Tua? No way. Are we gonna sign Matt Cassel and start him? No. If he wasn't physically ready to play, he would not be the only other QB on the roster.
To answer your top question: yes. I think we have to see where we're at at the midway point before we put him in though. What if we win like 5 of the next 7 games, for instance, and we're within arm's reach of a new playoff spot? I would wait until we're mathematically eliminated or it's clear that Fitzpatrick can't win the games. Hard to tell that when we haven't put together a complementary game outside of Jacksonville yet. At that point it's time for Tua to get some on-the-job training to prep for next year. Edit: Edited first line because I thought the question was, "Would you have a problem if he starts in a month?"
Reminds me of dating some women. They are never ready on time so you sit there waiting hoping it might pay off.
I'd put him in at halftime if we're losing the Broncos game in Denver and start him the rest of the year.
I hear everyone out. But if Tua is worth marrying , Gotta hit it first and see if that thing is popping first. I can’t help but to watch 2nd year man Josh Allen flourishing were they( Bills) in better position than us that year he was drafted? he needs to be thrown in the Trenches Throw Tua to the wolves and And let’s see how he will return. Now I’m afraid the dolphins are wayyy to over protective and concern with Tua Maybe they realize they may have Drafted a Glass. I’m pulling for the kid biggg time. If he failed get Trevor
https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.es...ressured-starting-tua-tagovailoa?platform=amp Flores basically says here Tua isn't starting any time soon. No balls Flores.
What a **** show the franchise is from the owner down to the coaching staff .At least my second team ( Packers) are doing well.
There are so many stupid excuses as to why he shouldn't play. If he wasnt healthy enough, they wouldnt have traded Rosen and made tua the backup. That leaves only one reason why he's not playing...... He's not very good. He can't even beat out Fitz, which is sad. Burrow and Herbert are on bad teams yet they're playing and doing pretty good yet our top 5 QB rides the pine. I'll say it again, it was a wasted pick. Next draft, we need to bundle both first round picks and Tua to move up to number one and get Trevor Lawrence. Tua is not the answer
If jumping to conclusions had the same result as jumping off a cliff in the Grand Canyon, there would be a lot fewer people on this forum!
Exactly. Why hasn't he played? He's obviously healthy enough or he wouldnt be the back up. Im guessing it's cause he's not that good. How is it burrow and Herbert are starting and our "franchise" QB can't even take a few snaps in the 4th quarter?
