Well here it is! The 2020 season opener.

We'll be up in Foxborough before the winter kicks in!

The new-look Dolphins will be facing the new-look Patriots and trying to pull off the double on the Patriot's home turf. Don't ask me for the stats, all I know is that it's something that hasn't happened in a long time.

As everyone knows, there's been no pre-season this year due the thing we all know about but I've not interest in talking about. We're all just going to have to jump in!

Here's a quick run up to the Patriots this season:

They've lost a few key players since 2019.

    Who Did They Lose?
Kyle Van Noy LB (to the Dolphins)
Elandon Roberts LB (to the Dolphins)
Jamie Collins LB (to the Lions)
    Dont'a Hightower LB (Opted Out)
    Danny Shelton DT (to Detroit)

    Patrick Chung S (Opted Out)

Ted Karras C (to the Dolphins)
    Marcus Cannon RT (Opted Out)
Najee Toran G (Futures contract - Opted Out)

Phillip Dorsett WR (to the Seahawks)
Marquise Lee WR (Veteran but oft injured. Also newly acquired but opted out)

    Brandon Bolden RB (Opted Out)
Dan Vitale FB (Just acquired but he opted out this year)
    James Develin FB (Retired)
    Matt LaCosse TE (Opted Out)

    Stephen Gostkowski K (Cut)

Oh and there was this one other guy... what was his name...? Shame.

If you noticed all the opt-outs you're not alone. The Patriots had the most players opt out in the NFL. Defensively, here's a little quote:

"the New England defense has lost 4,141 high-quality snaps and another 598 role-player snaps from 2019. That represents an absolutely staggering 45% of all defensive snaps lost from year to year."

    Who Did They Pick Up?
Beau Allen IDL - Run stuffer apparently.
Adrian Phillips S/ST - Supposedly versatile and one to watch in the 2ndry.

Damiere Byrd WR - Speedy dude. Looking to try to break out at NFL level.

Brian Hoyer QB - No comment.
Brandon Copeland LB - With all the losses they're looking for him to step up.
Cam Newton QB - Their new QB1.

Here's their draft this year, I won't comment because I don't follow the draft that closely.
    ------------------------------------------------------
(Source for the quote and off-season summary.)
    ------------------------------------------------------

So, the Patriots' D has suffered MASSIVE turnover and they've got a new and different QB. I suspect they too would have liked more time to get it together, but it would be foolish to think they're going to be as badly put together as other teams would be in their position. They've got a long-running structure and established culture and that might well cover for a lot of sins, so to speak.

What will they look like? I'm not sure anyone knows. Could this be the same looking Patriots as usual - same O and same D? Or will it be very different?
We're going to have to wait and see. All we know is that the theoretical scenario everyone wondered about - Belichick by himself - has actually arrived, so it will be interesting.

Side note - some people think the Pats are tanking and aiming for a high draft pick next year....

Oh - and the Pats got new uniforms, they went for their colour rush selection.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So, how are things shaping up for Sunday?

Sony Michel, the Pats' lead RB, is still recovering from an off-season foot injury and RB Damien Harris is on IR. They've still got James White and Rex Burkhead but expectations are they'll use Cam to help establish the run.

Following on from Miami's horrible pass-D last year there's expectation that Cam will have success throwing, but the Dolphins have revamped pass-protection so we'll see if that's the case.

On the offensive side, Miami is also something of a question mark with Chan Gailey running the offense and the OL featuring four new starters - how fast can they jell the way that's necessary for good OL play?

    Match-ups?
Parker vs. Gilmore is the one most people are excited about. Parker and Fitz got the best of (reigning Defensive Player of the Year) Stephon Gilmore when the Dolphins won a big one in New England but you have to believe that Gilmore will have taken that personally and watched some tape. Can Parker rise to the challenge?

Pats D vs. Fitzmagic - There's been talk from the Pats themselves that they know Fitz will give them "lots of opportunities". It sounds like the D will be hawkish for picks. Can the Miami offense add enough variety with all those WRs and TE's to keep the Pats guessing?

Belichick vs. Flores - You've got to think Flores knows what he's up against. Would love to see what's going on inside Flores' mind. Can the student once again defeat the teacher?

    Odds?
Bookies are giving the Patriots the advantage here with an average of -6.5.
    Over/Under at around 43.

    And the Rest...

The weather - chance of rain has gone. Mild all round.

    X-Factors:
The stadium - there won't be any fans... who knows what effect that will have, if any.
Comfort-zone - with a number of ex-Pats on the Dolphins squad will that help mitigate the trepidation some players have reported when going to Foxborough?

Van Noy had this to say:
“They’re familiar with me,” Van Noy said. “I’m familiar with them. I’m excited for this task. They’ve been talking trash for the four years that I’ve been there, so I’m excited to see if we both can back it up.”

“I know what winning looks like, structurally. [Brian Flores], I respect him a lot. He’s doing a really, really good job. We’re not taking any shortcuts. I wasn’t here last year, but the guys, you can tell, worked their *** off. This year, we continued that. For me to be a part of that and to be elected a captain from my peers, I’m honored and just hope we can take this first game — it’s a big game — and go up there with the mindset of winning.

That’s what they want to do, that’s what we want to do. It’s going to be a really really high-competitive game right off the bat and I’m excited for it. It’s what you wish for as a kid, playing. You’re playing against a rival team, at their home, opening game, through all the craziness going on, try to be a light for people off the field and on the field. It’s a good way to start.”

Enjoyed the video preview and actually got pretty excited about the addition of Jordan Howard and Matt Brieda.

If these 2 running backs can effectively run the ball, giving the Dolphins 2nd and short, it’ll really open the playbook. Does any of this sound familiar?

Defensively, the Dolphins really upgraded and should definitely be a force to contend with.

I certainly don’t want to have untested, no preseason hopeful hype cloud my judgement but I do see us falling to the Patriots in Foxborough, but I have a feeling this game is going to be much more competitive than many think.

LOL, do we have to bring Dirty back to get the titles right? That used to crack me up so much-

*******The Official, OFFICIAL Miami Dolphins vs. New England Patriots Game Thread*******

He'd post them the minute the previous week's game ended just so he could post something "official". And if someone else posted it, he'd just add stars and the number of times the title said "official"....I used to laugh so hard at that! I won't lie, I posted a few "official" threads just to drive the guy into a frenzy. =)

It's going to be a weird game, no Tom Brady and no crowd noise. Flores showed last season that he's not afraid to run gimmick plays, fake field goals fake punts. I think we'll see a healthy helping of creative football early to keep the defense guessing. Flores remembers Ronnie Brown and the look of confusion on Bruschi's face. Fitzpatrick is not intimidated going into Foxborough like Tannehill always seemed to be and, I'll bet that Flores looks forward to it. I like our chances.

Well being in the Orlando viewing area, I’m being forced to watch the Jaguar game.

Can someone please help me out with a free streaming channel that I can pull up? Got my new 65” 4K I wanna watch it on in my newly christened Man Cave!

May need a step by step block of instruction on how to get it up and going, so if you wanna PM me, I’d appreciate it.

Do a Youtube TV Trial. They have NFL RedZone available for free this weekend. If you are willing to use a VPN, you can probably get the Dolphins game on CBS.

Not this week! According to the TV map we are getting the Fins. I checked on Spectrum and it said Jags but then I went to WKMG's website and it says we're getting the Fins game too.

I'm gonna be ticked if it's otherwise!

Last year was pitiful. I think we got at most 4 games. Really pathetic since we live in Central Florida. Some bull. Been a Dolphin fan all my life and we always got nearly Dolphin game on TV. Then the Jags come in the league and claim Orlando as a secondary market so it forces us to watch Jaguar games. What crap, like were supposed to ditch our team just because the Jags come along. I don't even know a Jags fan around here

    I don't think so.

I'll just be honest, if Cam is healthy that scares me a bit. Brady wasnt anything to actually be worried about the last couple years, Cam might have gas in the tank.

    Pundit Predictions:

    Mike Reiss, ESPN:
    Pick: Patriots 24, Dolphins 20

    Cameron Wolfe, ESPN
    Pick: Patriots 20, Dolphins 16

    Gregg Rosenthal, NFL.com
    Pick: Patriots 23, Dolphins 17

    Pete Prisco, CBS Sports:
    Pick: Patriots 21, Dolphins 20

    Mike Florio, Pro Football Talk:
    Pick: Patriots 24, Dolphins 16

Michael David Smith, Pro Football Talk:
    Pick: Patriots 27, Dolphins 21

    ESPN:
What to watch for: While all eyes will be on Cam Newton becoming the first non-homegrown quarterback to start for the Patriots since Scott Secules in Week 10 of the 1993 season, equally as compelling will be the matchup between Dolphins wide receiver DeVante Parker and Patriots cornerback Stephon Gilmore (assuming both play through hamstring injuries). Parker got the better of Gilmore -- the NFL's Defensive Player of the Year -- in last year's season finale (eight catches, 137 yards) in a performance that sat with Gilmore all offseason. -- Mike Reiss

Bold prediction: Preston Williams -- not Parker -- leads the Dolphins in receiving, totaling over 100 yards in his first game back from a torn ACL. Parker was the star of the previous matchup between these two teams. But with a healthy duo and extra attention on Parker, Williams will be the main beneficiary of Ryan Fitzpatrick's aggressive downfield throws. -- Cameron Wolfe

Stat to know: Newton will become fifth quarterback to make his first start for the Patriots since Bill Belichick became the team's head coach. The previous four all won that first start.

    CBS:
Miami Dolphins (+6.5) at New England Patriots
This will be Cam Newton at quarterback for the Pats with Tom Brady gone. Newton has impressed in camp, and I think he will be fine. The problem is the talent in other spots. Even so, the Pats will find a way to win this game against a young Miami team. But it won't be easy.

The only guys picking the Dolphins:

    Trey Wingo, ESPN: Dolphins
    Dave Richard, CBS Sports: Dolphins

And a couple of video previews/predictions:

It's funny to me. I know our recent history and all but they are predicting this thing like nothing has changed with the Pats or us. If anything The Dolphins have improved dramatically on paper and the Pats are clearly weakened. If we get decent Oline play there will be a lot of crow on the menu.

Or the media will go on and on about what's wrong with the Patriots, Belichick, Cam, because they couldn't beat the Dolphins, rather than the other way around. Things are slowly changing because there seem to be a lot of people who respect Flores, but for now, the Dolphins get minimal air time and consideration.

    Fins up!

LOL that reminds me of the 80's when Dan Dierdorf was on MNFL. Back then it was of course the Niners. Every time the Niners were losing it was always the Niners weren't playing up to their potential. Never that whoever was handing it to them was doing right.

    Hated that guy!

The Miami Dolphins can win this game. As a fan, I think we should win this game, but it should come down to 3-7 points IMO. Keys to the game - No turnovers. No pre Snap penalties. If we are good there we win again in New England.

    My hopes for Week 1:
    - WR Williams starts right where he left off at the time of his injury as a dynamic playmaker and go to guy. Parker to resume here he left off Dominating the Patriots Week 17. If these two start the season in Beast mode, the game may not be close at all.
    - I want the Dolphins to find a series for Tua. I don't care what, I don't care how. Do it. Same goes for OG/OT Hunt. I was shocked to hear hunt wasn't starting. I expected a Kindley / Hunt tandem for the next decade.
    - Find way to let Brieda be the homerun hitter, and let Howard pound the defense throughout the game. One needs to pass 100 yards rushing.
    - We need to make Newton think, and exploit him on various blitz packages. That's when he is at his worst.

Ok, I watched all of the videos, read all of the posts and did some reading and analysis of my own. Here’s my take on Sunday’s upcoming game...

While there’s been so much focus on the loss of Brady, for me the focus needs to be more on New England’s defense. Last season clearly demonstrated to me that he was no where near the player he used to be. It was New England’s #1 ranked defense that carried the team and with the loss of so many of those players, through trades or opting out for the season, these aren’t last year’s Patriots. The Dolphins have a revamped young offensive line and 2 new running backs. The other skill positions from last season’s second half run are still intact. I actually believe the offensive unit is going to be a problem for the Patriots defense.

On the other side of the ball, the wildcard here is going to be Cam Newton. Now while I don’t believe the Newton of old is the Newton the Patriots have now, the threat of a running quarterback is something Flores is going to have to game plan for. The Dolphins have added many new faces to the defense and on paper, it’s a definite upgrade but without preseason to see if they truly meld together as a cohesive unit is cause for concern. Luckily, some of these new faces have a history with Flores and know what’s expected.

Finally this is ultimately come down to Belichick vs Flores. For the past 20 years, Belichick has the consistency of Brady at quarterback. He’ll no longer have that and have to be able to adapt as needed with a different quarterback with a completely different skills set. Flores is fortunate enough to have the consistency with a team he’s relatively familiar with, in returning players from last season or Patriots that have jumped ship. So will Flores be able to our coach the great Belichick? Well he’s 1-1 so he’s demonstrated that he can.

Offensively I think both teams are going to start off slowly, trading 3 and outs but bottom line, I actually think we fans are going to be pleasantly surprised as the Dolphins win 23-20

Mike, I agree with just about everything you said with the exception of Tagovailoa. I don’t want Tua on the field at all unless for some freak reason we’re winning against the Patriots 27-0 with 7:00 left in the game. Then give him some snaps from a position of strength where he can actually play without running for his life.

The only other way I would even consider Tagovailoa going in is if we’re losing 27-0 with 7:00 left in the game...just to see how he handles the adversity.

If he for some reason miraculously performs ala Marino relieving Woodley, then maybe it might be worth giving him another shot...MAYBE, but I don’t want him thrown to the wolves until the base unit of the offense is playing to par.

Miami has had a terrible history in throwing rookie quarterbacks to the wolves before the team itself was ready...Henne and Tannehill both come to mind. Quite difficult to excel when you’re running for your life every snap

Yeah, there are a ton of question marks with both teams. However, the Patriots really have been gutted. I've got a sneaky suspicion that the Patriots could be in for a really rough year. Cam has talent but maybe their offense proves to be too one-dimensional, too simple. People will figure it out and there's not much they can do.

Maybe the Phins have too much to learn yet, but if people don't think there's a chance for a Miami then that has to bode poorly for Miami. Right?

    Me Too. PM me PLEASE!
This will be the first year in 16 or so I haven't been to my local bar for the opening day game at least. The only bar I go to and the only reason I go there is for the community.

But tomorrow I can't go. I had to get tested for Flippin Covid yesterday so now I am hard quarantined for 2 weeks. Can't leave the house. So any way I can watch the game would be greatly appreciated. I've got the red zone, and the NFL thing so I can listen ate least and watch tomorrow, but I would rather watch it live tomorrow

Offensively, we will try and pound the rock. We revamped our backfield and OL - may as well use it. New England lost A LOT of run-stopping power via FA subtraction and Covid opt-outs like Hightower. See if we can move the ball early on the ground and then once New England has to commit extra help to that, use Parker, Williams and Gieseki to pick them apart downfield.

Defensively, commit to stopping the run and rely on our pricey CBs to do their jobs without extra help. Bottle up the running game, pressure Newton and force him into errors or sacks.

I wouldn't be surprised at all to see both teams be sub-20 points, and I think without the crowd in New England we have a very good shot to take this game. Would be a huge feather in our cap to start the season, and give this team some attitude and fans some real hope.

The way we ran the ball last year I'll be thrilled with 75 yards between them.

"This year, the league changed the active roster rules. Previously, only 46 players would be active for the game, meaning seven players were declared inactive. This season, there are 47 active players for each game, with a team allowed to have 48 active players, as long as eight of the active players are offensive linemen. That cuts inactive lists down to as low as five players. That could also change as teams use the new option to activate a practice squad player for a game without bringing him off the practice squad, meaning a team can carry as many as 55 players into Sunday, then inactivate more players to get back down to the 47/48 player limit."

"The Dolphins’ five inactive players for today’s game are wide receiver Malcolm Perry, wide receiver Lynn Bowden, Jr., safety Clayton Fejedelem, defesive end Jason Strowbridge, and tackle Adam Pankey. There are no real surprises in the list, though Perry not being active could be considered a little bit of a surprise just because he has reportedly looked good working as the team’s slot receiver."

"The Patriots’ inactives include quarterback Jarrett Stidham, tight end Dalton Keene, linebacker Cassh Maluia, linebacker Josh Uche, and offensive lineman Korey Cunningham. Keene (neck) and Maluia (knee) were both questionable on the Patriots’ injury report."

"Patriots rookie tight end Dalton Keene is inactive leaving two active players dressed for the Patriots at the position (Devin Asiasi and Ryan Izzo).

Quarterback Brian Hoyer will serve as the backup to Cam Newton with Jarrett Stidham inactive.

Kicker Nick Folk and defensive lineman Xavier Williams were promoted from the practice squad."

"Threads: The Dolphins will wear white tops and aqua bottoms. The Patriots are in their new navy blue tops and navy blue bottoms.

Weather: The forecast in Foxborough, Mass. calls for 72 degrees, partly cloudy, a 5 percent change of rain and 6-8 MPH winds."
