You seem happy but he doesnt produce any turnovers and many seem to want to give Hoard away in place of this CB. He never stood out when I watched the cowpokes
To your point, he only has 2 interceptions in 79 career games, which is a very low number. He also has 0 career sacks and fumble recoveries, and somewhat pedestrian numbers in other key stats like forced fumbles, tackles and tackles for losses. But, his game is coverage, which is where he excels. He was the 7th best CB (out of 131 qualifying CB's) in 2018. Can't find how he ranked last year, but by all accounts he is one of the top rated cover corners.
Not sure why the Dolphins feel the need to have two CB's the highest paid at their position. I've scoured the Cowboys forum and no one seems to miss the guy especially at the price we paid.
the only way I see it makes sens is that having 2 premium corners 1 with ball skills and 1 with coverage skills will help pass rush and safeties
He is good.. So good that teams stay away from him... If we keep Howard and we have Needham as the third corner out there... Teams will have no easy place to try to throw the football. Jones is a guy that takes the #1 receiver of the other team out of games week in and week out.. He gets the toughest matchups in football and he is stingy with the number of completions he allows. He is very good. Stop looking at the number of interceptions ( Or the lack thereof. ) Start looking at how low the completion percentage is when teams throw the ball in his direction.
IMO, he's good now but is going to be much, much better after Flores gets a hold of him. I think he has a way of bringing out the best in guys. Edit: Sheesh, my post is full of grammar errors (again). Maybe with all this time off I am having, I could learn to write. LOL!
INT’s aren’t always a good indication of ability. It can mean QB’s throw their way more or that they’re a ball hawk. Opposing QB’s had one of the lowest completion rates in the NFL against him. That tells me he’s doing something right. I’m not under illusion that he’s the best or even top 3 CB in the NFL. I think Grier paid a premium to get a guy that’s a great system fit for Flores who wants to play man defense and attack from multiple points. If Howard is healthy, they’ll be one of the best CB tandems in the NFL.
As I've said, I believe Howard will be on his way out next year, especially if he doesnt play in and dominate all 16 games. Or we are absolute morons for paying two top tier corners. As to INT numbers, I'd gladly trade some of his great completion % against statistic for additional turnovers as long as he wasnt giving up bombs. Most corners understand a turnover has more impact on a game than a low completion % and balance the two.
I would rather have the advanced metrics that Jones has even though I don’t get the picks, then someone who gets a 4 or 5 picks but isn’t consistent in his play and show a high completion percentage and poor tackling metrics..
He is going to make a payday hope it pays off. It looks like Flores is making sure the secondary isn't the weak link this coming season.
I think Jones is a an example of a superior athlete learning how to play football, and continually getting better at his craft..
Jones and Howard can play pretty aggressive man defense on an island which allows for the rest of the defense to play the Patriot way. Of the Patriots top 11 paid. 5 are defensive backs including their most expensive player now that Brady is gone.
If we roll with Howard and Jones... and manage to get a safety in the first two rounds of the draft... We will have one of the leagues top defenses.
I know people don't want to rain on the Byron parade. But I was watching his highlights and I can't say I'm terribly impressed. Not because of the lack of turnovers, but because he looks like he'd get called for a lot of P.I. Refs don't call much of the Cowgirls. The Fins are a different story, every ticky tack penalty seems to go against us especially in the DB area. Anyway, he seems to bump and grab the receiver too much well beyond 5 yds as well as he doesn't look back for the ball very often (probably contributes to the fact that he doesn't get many INTS.) He's good at running with the receiver, he doesn't seem good at knowing when and where to turn and play the ball. For me, B. Jones is a "show me" player. I'm not as confident in his ability as some Fin fans seem to be. I'm much more confident in Xavien, and it's lucky we have him and Jones will be on the opponents #2 WR most often.
If you listened to the Drive Time podcast on the Dolphins site you’d know that Jones numbers vs other elite receivers are at the very top of the league. As in OBJ, Julio, Diggs, Alshon Jeffery (who actually did better then the rest) etc all held under 30 yards the last 2 years on throws vs Jones. Hes got 45 pass breakups over the last 5 years despite spending a healthy amount of time at FS. People look at the 45 PBU’s and assume he can’t catch but Dallas also played the same type of press man we played the last few years. His run D and tackling are strong. He still has combine records for vertical and I believe broad jump. To say he’s one of the top 5 CBs in the game is an understatement. He and X give us the best starting CB tandem in the league imo which means whoever has the slot (looking at you McCain or Needham) has a big red X on him. As for how we ended up with him , I’m going to assume it had a lot to do with Thuney getting franchised at the last minute by the pats. I’m also going to assume Scherff getting franchise has an effect. You could argue that we should have used the money on Conklin as that’s the bigger need but Jones is better at his position then Conklin at his (and by no means is that an insult to Conklin). Just a hunch. EDIT: To be clear, if I was running the team, I’d even consider signing Logan Ryan as the other perimeter CB and putting Jones at FS. Eliminate FS as a need, and free up another asset to go after OL/front 7 and QB early.
