"What will it take to land Jadeveon Clowney? Perhaps more than $21 million per season, Pelissero reported. The free-agent edge rusher is seeking a new contract higher than Buckner's new extension and what DeMarcus Lawrence received last year from the Cowboys. Pelissero added that the Seahawks are interested in bringing Clowney back, although they might not meet his asking price, while the Jets have also been in communication with the star defensive end."

I pull that trigger and start him at Weakside 3-4 OLB and 4-3 Weakside DE. No question that our pass rush is completely addressed. I also love Seiler (we signed from Ravens at the end of last season) He's that extra big body we need. He is a keeper. Adding Clowney puts us over the top pass rush.

There are younger, faster, hungrier and CHEAPER talent to be had in the draft IF we don't piss away our top draft picks.

I am not sure if he is even interested in coming here. Last year, he was supposed to be a part of the Tunsil trade, and he essentially nixed the deal.

On a side note, I am kinda spooked that he hasn't signed a deal yet. Aside from the QBs, he was probably the best free agent available when the tampering period began. Part of me wonders if teams are nervous that giving him a ton of guaranteed money might be something they regret later.

That being said, I have wanted Clowney ever since we hired Flores. I think his versatility is EXACTLY what he is looking for. I think sooner or later, he is going to realize that he simply is not going to get the money he wants. If he really thinks he deserves as much as he is asking, I would be willing to work with him. If he wants $21 mil/year, I would be willing to offer him $25 mil for just one year. We have the money. I would be willing to give him a premium to get him in the building, convince him that we are building a winner, and assess him first hand. If all works out, we do a long term deal. If not, we are in and out after a year with no longer term harm

No thanks, dudes way too injury prone and vanishes for too many stretches to pay that salary. Not touching that with a social distancing approved 10 ft pole.

21+ million $$$ for a guy who's never even had double-digit sacks?? That's a hard pass, he's yet to live up the hype and probably never will. He's a great run defender and a good pass rusher but for 21 million he needs to be a great pass rusher.

Pass... theres some pass rushing talents in the draft i rather take a chance on than spend 21 million to a guy that gets erased often.

I think Clowney will get a dose of reality, unless the Jests decide to pay him. Or a Super Bowl-or-bust team like the Saints would make sense for him, as a one year rental, but I doubt they have the cap space unless they do a multi-year deal and spread out the cap hit.

He does not make sense for Miami.

I don't think adding Clowney at this point would be super cost effective with Lawson and Ogbah. It's generally been a bargain position with Belichick, and the Dolphins are already in for like $17m a year between the two.

It's worth remembering DE isn't the only edge rushing position in the defense- the OLBs are sharing the workload too. The way the defensive is structured gives you a bit of flexibility, but I think you can make a pretty compelling argument that it's easier to run the defense with a 2nd DE being more of a sub/rotational player than it is to do the same with OLB. If you're relying on KVN to play some ILB, you're also tapping deeper into the OLB well.

He's underachieved big time in the NFL. The talent and ability are definitely there though. I've seen him make incredible plays on the field at times and i've seen him completely vanish like Mr. Mcguire when he stole Shannons spoons in Far and Away. He's going to want too much money, and I don't think he really ever had any interest in playing here anyway. He's supposed to be a sack master, yet he's never recorded double digit sacks. He does face constant double teams and teams definitely key on containing him at times, but that excuse can only go so far. He's under performed big time! He's basically the Reggie Bush of defensive players. Absolutely unstoppable in college, a man amongst boys at all times and yet has been mediocre while displaying potential all world ability (at times) as a pro.

The idea of Clowney being an underachiever, IMO, is wrong. He is one of the best edge defenders in the league when it comes against going against the run. Most edge defenders would rather just be in on pass downs so they can make their money.

He is one of the better players in the league. Sacks are a way overrated stat in the NFL.

Not to start an argument, but people would say the same things about Reggie Bush at his position. The fact it....Numbers wise.....Clowney has underachieved just like Bush did.

Word from Shehacks connections is Clowney is getting no love and they are confident they will be able to get him back in the 18 million range on another short term 2-3 yr deal.

Not a fit for this team. He's crazy talented but wildly inconsistent. He' dominated 1 game, just one last year, he was solid for a few more but he missed like 6 games and when he came back he wasn't better and he was playing hurt all season. He seems to me like he isn't putting in the work to get his body right, just relying on natural ability.

I would agree with a lot of that, but being a great run defender is not as valuable as being a great pass rusher. It just isnt.

There are maybe 2-3 teams in the entire league that can win games via the run and 29-30 who try and do their damage through the air.

EDIT: I will say though being an entirely one trick pony still isnt good for a pass rusher. He needs some ability to set the edge.

A lot of good points in this thread in regard to not signing Clowney. The fact is that while he is great when he wants to be, he takes plays off and probably is not a good fit for our current team.

Just heard on this evenings KOMO4 News that Clowney turned down an offer of 17 million a year from...the Dolphins. This year. When Clowney turned them down they went for Lawson. It was in the story about how the Shehacks are hopeful they will be able to resign him. Rumor has it the Seaholes only offered him 13mil for 3 years. Basically a two year deal.

I'm not a fan anyway but I wouldn't have been mad at him being here at 17 mill with a team friendly out after two.

That would have been the move to make before we signed to edge pass rushers. I like what we’ve done so far. Addressed some problem areas, upgraded several starters and got Flores type of players in place. FA is a crapshoot and not all these guys will earn their paydays. Let’s not go from salary cap advantage to disadvantage.

Overall, I like what Grier has done. Let’s continue addressing needs with our 14 picks in the draft. Some of these FA’s were signed to 3 year deals. Gives us a couple of drafts to build around them and if they don’t pan out, cut them.

I am hoping Grier doesn't turn back into the Dolphins of old where we grossly overpay for underachieving FA and totally ruin our cap. Teams are going to overpay in FA and I get that we did a little of that this year, but this year is different. There is a cap floor too, so we had to spend some money. I am not disappointed that we chose Jones for the big, big bucks. It's a position of need and he is versatile. That said, going forward I would like to see us be a little bit more discerning so we have the money if we need it should a guy or two shake loose who could really help us.

Think it's likely that he spent a decent amount this year a) because we needed an infusion of talent, particularly in the areas that he got them in for and b) because as you said, there's a cap floor. However, going forward, after this draft and likely next year's draft, the plan is to only fill 1 or 2 holes in FA but get more draft picks to build that way.
Also, he hasn't tied us in for 4 or 5 years with these pick-ups, so defo better than Tannebaum's efforts, so not ruining the future cap.
