His play doesn't match the salary anymore and we aren't going to be crushed by dead money. And yeah, he's been a bit weird off the field, though last year under Flores wasn't as bad as him under Gase.

This is just part of the business... He is on the wrong side of 30 and his career is in decline... He was one hell of a football player in his time.

I think that this was a pretty obvious move on a lot of levels.

We have to consider the game within the game within the game.

We have a ton of cap space. I do expect the Dolphins to be active within free agency, but I do foresee a higher degree of prudence than usual.

We have fourteen draft picks, and everyone on this site can tell you that we will be active on draft day.

Now here is the game within the game within the game - roster spots. We are gonna be adding guys in droves. Obviously, newly signed free agents will be locks to make the roster, but after that, it is sort of gonna be a mess. Drafting fourteen players would be incredibly stupid. Imagine bringing all fourteen guys into camp plus undrafted rookies. You may have undrafted rookies outperforming drafting rookies, and now you are stuck deciding whether you wanna keep the guys with more potential over guys with less potential but are currently performing better. Now a lot of arm chair GMs will say, "It's easy, keep the guy with potential," or "Simple to me, if you are performing better, you get the spot." But here is the thing. Both guys are wrong. Training camp and the preseason is simply not enough time to really gauge the talent of a lot of guys and clearly not enough time for guys to get their footing. This year is going to be vastly different than previous years. In any given year, I imagine our rookie class probably has right around 9 guys that are worthy of making a roster, and even in those situations, 7 guys probably wind up actually making our roster. With 14 draft picks plus undrafted free agents, you are probably looking at a situation where 17 or so rookies are worthy of a roster spot. That is simply unmanageable not just because we would be adding a ton of rookies, but because veterans who are most likely better players and have guaranteed money.

So how do we play the game within the game within the game. Cutting a players just like Jones is the first step. Any guy who it is difficult to see being on the roster for much longer than two seasons is immediately on the chopping block. If they have large contracts, they are even more likely to be cut. Next step - do NOT draft 14 players. We should move up to get players we like. Also, we should be looking to trade picks for 2021 picks. That way, we can spread the picks out and have a longer time to properly evaluate younger players. In doing this, we can maintain a strong pipeline of young players that will continue to add to our franchise. For years, the Patriots took this approach, and it felt like they perpetually had a nice cache of high draft picks. I think we should take a long term approach and allocate at least some picks to be flipped into 2021.

He should have been cut as soon as he took himself out of the Tennessee game a few years ago.

He was probably the best in the business at one point and easily one of my favorites due to his instincts, but I also understand the move with his age and recent events. Most of us expected this.

What had me more curious is Xavien Howard- he's been hurt a lot and had legal troubles despite just signing that massive contract. I'm wondering if he's on the trade block.

Good. I've wanted Jones cut since he benched himself.

Not a winning player or attitude. Period. Dont let the door hit your sorry behind on the way out, loser.

Same, I don’t care how good you are. Can’t suit up and play a game for millions while others go to factories every day for a percent of what he makes, time to get a reality check.

Ir’s been obvious for at least 2 years that he no longer. The trouble is once you lose that fire and enthusiasm for working at a particular place it is very hard to ever get it back. It probably would have been better for all concerned for him to leave the phins much earlier than he has.

Wasn't it the Jets game? Doesn't matter, as do agree that he was on borrowed time after that

I think it was the crazy Tennessee game that was delayed.

I'm pretty sure it was the Jets, didnt we either shut them out or allow like 3 or 7 points or something?

I am not keen on giving up picks this year, so I would offfer X in a Detroit or Redskin trade up scenario if they can handle his salary. The benefit for them is he's a proven NFL player and not as risky as a draft pick. :devil2:

Yes. It was the Week 9 home game vs the Jets, which we won 13-6. It followed the blowout loss to Houston, where Reshad was embarassed multiple times in coverage and made poor efforts to tackle. That night was really the beginning of the end for him.

Not sure either guy is factoring in heavily at this point, though you never know. Wouldn't be surprised to see us target guys like Thuney, Karras, Glasgow, Garland, etc and get a solid base set up. It's a talented and top heavy OL group this year. I wouldn't be mad to see us grab 2-3 dudes within the first two rounds. Maybe a tackle and a C/G. Doubt we sniff any of the top 4 tackles, but there is still good talent after them. Jones at 18 and Ruiz at 26? Can't complain.

I'd like to see us sign Center Aaron Neary...spent time with the Rams, Browns, Broncos, and Eagles. Eastern Washington product. Very smart and athletic with a mean streak. He's put the time in and is ready to roll.
