Interestingly, there is speculation from Detroit media that they won't take Chase Young even if he's available. They are being increasingly linked to Brown and Simmons. Some feeling that Young isn't a "Patriot's Way" style player lol. There is 0 confidence in the Quinn/Patricia combo to successfully navigate this offseason.
Far from meaningless. These players at the senior bowl are basically on an audition for their future pro careers. They are being coached by NFL coaches. The place is filled with NFL execs and scouts, etc. They even run a bit of some more pro concepts.They have to show that they can rise to the occasion. Herbert did just that and rose higher than just about anyone in the game. You know...fwiw.
That's exactly the point. Every one of the players in the senior bowl is motivated, head in the game, doesn't NEED someone to lead them. Very different from your average college game where you have freshmen, sophomores, kids who don't know what they're doing and have never been there before and need a leader to motivate and inspire them.
Well, first I was referring to your comment about the Senior Bowl being "meaningless". I explained how it is not meaningless. Now, you're just talking about leading and inspiring. Ok. Your reasoning still doesn't float. You're saying the game doesn't show anything because they are seniors and they don't need motivation and leadership. Well, if that were true, then what would any QBs leadership quality matter going into the pros? By your reasoning, those NFL players certainly wouldn't need anyone to lead them since they are pro players. They would need leadership even less than the college seniors who you claim don't need anyone to lead them. So, again by your reasoning, then what does leadership matter in the NFL? Why harp on that point?
Your line of reasoning is the one that makes no sense. You don't see how there's a difference between a single game with a group who all have the same experience and the same level of motivation and a long, grueling season of games with injuries, people who might not be on the same talent level, rookies and veterans, people who might not get along, trying to keep things together during losing streaks... Yeah, one of us isn't making any sense here and it's not me.
I would argue that performing well when the stakes are high is exactly what you should look for. Underperforming at the senior bowl or combine, and your draft stock plummets. That's some pretty intense pressure for young athletes.
The more I think on it, I think the Dolphins are going to make Herbert their pick at 5 if he is available. I think there is a strong chance that Herbert may be the second quarterback selected, and Tua will take a small dive.

Ha! Uhh. I don't think so. No chance with a name like Herbert. Nah man, I just like him as a prospect. I haven't been going overboard like some do over certain players. I will throw my opinions and thoughts out there. That's what we do this time of year leading up to the draft. There's certainly been a lot of people talking up Tua and Burrow, no? Also, if I see comments or an eval of the guy with which I don't agree, I will give my opinions. I don't mind if people don't agree and have their own opinions. Since, I was the one and only person to vote for him in that thread from awhile back with that poll, I certainly expect people to not like him and disagree with me. I'm not even claiming that he's definitely going to be a great QB. Wtf knows? It's such a small percentage of QBs that get drafted and turn out to be great, franchise players. I'm also aware that he has his faults. It's just that out of the top three guys this year, he is my favorite and top choice. Yes, I would love to see our Phins draft him.
I prefer Herbert too. He already looks like an NFL ready QB. Moves good in the pocket, goes through his reads quick, makes accurate throws not just vertically but horizontal routes. Tua is the hyped pick, Herb is the smart pick... For more potential as a franchise QB.
If we draft Fromm... Someone needs to burn the stadium to the ground in protest... I will buy you a pack of matches.

Small school QB's generally scare the **** out of me.... Playing in the who gives a Fook conference against Barber college and beauty school teams... They are not battle tested. Love has never beaten a quality school with a quality defense. Getting a QB like Hurts that has played in the SEC at Oklahoma... For national titles and in playoffs games against the best teams in the country over and over and over... You know what you are getting... They have had to take hits and throw the ball... They have been pressured and had to remain calm. As a rule I do not want the guy from a division II school out west. Hard pass
But you could say that his supporting cast aren't 'quality' as well, whereas Hurts has had top quality supporting talent - I don't know college football well at all but looking at his opposition, it's hardly a bunch of bums.
Commenting on a couple of the previous posts... Ive never watched the Senior Bowl...ever, and my lack of personal observation may not offer a full informed opinion but it seems to me the Senior Bowl is the NCAA version of the Pro Bowl. Granted, coached by NFL coaches with NFL schemes but does anyone really think any of these kids are going full bore, 100% and risking catastrophic injury that would jeopardize their potential NFL career? Those throws by Herbert at first glance are indeed quite impressive...until you look at the fact no one is trying to plant him like a cheap shrubbery and no one is trying to break up said passes being thrown. I just don’t give very much credence to QB combine performance. I look at their actual history, particularly in high stakes games to evaluate their potential. And in regards to Beck...some of the most successful coaches in the NFL were mere mediocre players during their tenure as players in the NFL. Shula was mediocre at best as a DB playing for Cleveland under Paul Brown. How did that turn out?
There are plenty of great things about the senior bowl... it is week long event where coaches and scouts get to see prospects come together and practice all week and then play in the all star game ( sort of what it is ) So lesser known qbs from other parts of the country can step into the spotlight and coaches get a look at them. competing against the best of the best all week... really gives evaluators an idea of your talent level. So in that regard I like the senior bowl... even if the game itself is like you said the pro bowl
How do you know people aren't going full bore if you aren't watching it? In general though, teams seem to weigh the practices much more than the game itself as it gives insight into how the players take coaching, work and adapt.
I agree, or a trade-down situation. But I think the owner really wants a young QB and if we don't trade up, he'll force a Love pick.
Nobody really can believe that someone prefers Herbert.. Herbert is a decent prospect... But Tua 100% healthy would be like Andrew Luck in terms of quality as a prospect.
Did anyone happen to catch his pro day yesterday? I saw some really good throws, but I also saw some stuff that he still needs to work on. He's raw and will need to be developed. I think that's a given. But, at the end of the session someone from the Dolphins coaching/scouting staff (sorry, but I don't remember who) walked over to Herbert and apparently asked him to go down to the end of the field, stand flat footed and throw the ball as far as he could without moving his feet (i.e., not stepping into it). His second throw went 63 yards, in the air. I don't know how important or critical that little exercise is/was, but I think it's safe to say he's got an arm on him. Combined with his size, intelligence, attitude and work ethic and he is a rock solid QB prospect IMO. That said, I honestly think he's the fallback plan in the event Tua isn't there at #5. Either that or it's all just smoke. Time will tell.
Here is PFF's current Big Board (up to 25). Herbert was 29th on their board. I agree that he may be a fall back plan, but I also think he is a significantly inferior prospect. If the top 3 go the way you suggest then I’d imagine the Giant’s GM’s phone would be in danger of melting down because of the number of teams ringing him to trade up to take Chase Young.
