Without Derrick Henry and tbe looks tbe patriots gave them they aren’t gonna play the same game. you call the game relative to what your gameplan is and what the defense shows you and what works. was there ever a doubt that Tennessee’s best bet was to shorten that game?
It’s not about his OC calling those plays..you don’t wait until late fourth quarter to establish his own threat as a runner.
I don’t think I’m being unfair by saying Ryan didn’t play a good game.. I think I’m being fair to say most qbs in the nfl could of won that game for the titans.
Someone show me on tape where the pats played the Ryan Fitzpatrick led dolphins the same way they played the titans on d last night. Belichick gameplans specifically for the opponent even he will tell you that
Didn't look like Ryan being the focal point was ever the game plan last night, I mean they only called 15 pass plays. It was clear they were riding Henry in that game which is what most thought would happen. Tannehill did what he was supposed to do and the Titans won. Next week they will need more from him and we will see if he can deliver. If he goes out and stinks up the place then it may be a different story but thats a future discussion. Congratulations and thanks to the Titans for a great win! A nice tag team from the Fins and Titans for ridding the league of the Patriot Boogeyman.
Also I’m sure the vast majority of those titan passes last night were play action working off of the run game. And there was still plenty of pressure or coverage on the vertical concepts
I agree but I think the scoreboard and the sticks dictated the titans gameplan and in game sticking to plan a. Not to mention the pats offense wasn’t doing much. Not to mention I’m sure the titans felt like the pats secondary had an advantage. particularly the corner level which had played really well all year. All 3 of those guys. losing mccourty imo was huge the last 2 weeks
I’m serious when I say I’m rooting for him, all Iam doing is measuring his play compared to what I want for our team..
Again, you're talking about whether a player could have done more or had a better game. Like I said it has nothing to do with if you helped them win. If the team won, everyone on that team who made any play helped them win. What you're describing is if its repeatable and consistent, it isnt, but it was enough to help win the game yesterday. I wouldnt have considered everything answered even if he had a great game. He lived to fight another day which is all that matters at this point. We will see if he can up his game.
I just can’t believe this. This is silly. So until Ryan Tannehill plays like Ryan Fitzpatrick you won’t be proven wrong? BTW Fitzpatrick taking over games equates to a career .399 win/loss %. Tannehill is at .505 win/loss %. And historically Tannehill runs for 1.8 yards less per game. Tannehill is a budding star and Fitzpatrick is a good story.
On top of that, Belichick paid Tannehill the ultimate compliment. He chose to take away the PA game, not the running game. He knew his defense couldn't stop them with the more conventional defensive approach, he had to have his guys locked into ONE phase, to take the decision out of their play. And it worked...the targets were covered well all game.
And when Tannehill threw the ball it was with pinpoint accuracy. There were multiple uncalled PI penalties. The TD pass at the beginning of the game was spectacular. Don’t forget it was 3rd and 10! It was also outside of the 10yard line. He had pressure right away and delivered a strike in an obvious passing situation.
It sounds like we're agreeing pretty much about the highlighted portion above, which is the main point in my opinion. I think the way I would phrase that is that it was bad, and it's more often than not a major contributor to a loss, but it wasn't so bad that it couldn't be overcome by the rest of the team, due to its performance in that particular game. The other main point for me is that the team is unlikely to get that sort of performance from the rest of its team again. They're highly unlikely to hold a playoff-caliber opposing QB to a passer rating so low (Brady's 59). Just to give that some context, take the 22 playoff games that have occurred since 2004 in which one team had a passer rating between 55 and 67 (similar to Tannehill's yesterday) and the opposing team had a passer rating of 85 (roughly average) or higher. The team with the passer rating of 85 or higher has won 18 of those 22 games (82%). The four wins by those 22 teams with lower passer ratings were by an average margin of 2.8 points, and two of those games were won by just a single point -- those teams squeaked by. So if Tannehill performs similarly next week and Lamar Jackson has just a typical performance for him -- let alone something extraordinary for him -- the Titans will have very little chance of winning. They'll need an even more herculean performance from Derrick Henry in that event, and I'm not sure that's possible. So Tannehill has to come to play overall next week, or we won't be able to take single plays he made here and there and say they helped his team win.
Yeah, I feel like BB was completely content to let Henry run wherever he wanted. And, in fairness, it worked. The Patriots only had to score more than 14 points to win that game. Too bad for them their offense is terrible.
Tannehill didn't do what he was supposed to do. If your team is going to ride its running game and make you pass the ball very infrequently, what you need to be is a game manager, protect the ball first and foremost, and not take sacks. If your team isn't asking you to win the game, then you sure as hell shouldn't play in a way that could lose it. You simply play a clean and conservative game and let the other parts of your team win it. Tannehill however threw a pick on just 15 attempts -- that's a 6.7% interception rate, which would've been highest in the league in 2019. He was also sacked once and fumbled twice. Again, the team won in spite of Tannehill. And that's highly unlikely to happen again if he plays similarly.
I’m still seeing a lot of depth safeties in the second half. Difference i see is the patriots went to that 6 man/bear front. Which given the safety depth still means run the ball but it’s real hard to outflank so everything’s got to be north and south and it’s tough. Unless you can break thru into that second level. Also seeing a lot of drop zone behind it coverage wise. I would think tbe flats would be where you make hay in the passing game and I don’t see much flats usage from the titans. On the tanny int I think he was throwing a 50/50 ball to #84 but he didn’t locate the ball early and the ball floated on him. Nice play by the safety there to come up with the pick titans tried to get that tight end isoed on tbe replacement safety for Chung and when they did they made the pats pay.
Tannehill helped his team beat the Patriots . . . in the playoffs. Naysayers can kindly . . . well, fluff off. Dude has the goods, and always has.
He might have the goods, but they weren't shown yesterday. And whether he can demonstrate the goods in big games has always been an issue with him, and still is.
3rd and 5 finally sees single high with robber running underneath the sticks concepts he makes a hell of a throw to the back for an 8 yard gain. Should have gone for more but Gilmore played it really heady to come off his carry coverage second half #54 for the pats is really showing up off tackle to off tackle
Next week Tannehill is going to have to play better than he did last night, and I’m willing to bet you’ll see a much better performance. Derrick Henry is going to be crucial against Baltimore’s stout run defense. Tennessee is going to have to assert themselves to the run in order to loosen up their secondary. What concerns me more about next week is not Tannehill nor Tennessee’s offense, but their defense. Now Tennessee stepped it up defensively last night against the Patriots but their defense didn’t have to worry about Tom Brady cutting loose and running for 20 yards here and there at a pop. Lamar Jackson will. Tennessee is going to have to contain Jackson and keep him in the pocket, much like the strategy that was often employed against Michael Vick with the Falcons for success. If Tennessee falls next week, I truly don’t believe it will be on the Titans offense, but their defense.
Aside from the fumbled snap and the INT, his game was very good, even with the restricted plan and blanket coverage/pressure.
yeah took away the vertical pa game which forced the ball underneath. Some call that settling others call it where the ball should go
3rd and 3 on the tipped ball at the los he’s gonna convert inside there but he’s got a much easier pivot route working outside. Would have liked to see him go there with it. I’m sure he id’d zone there pre snap and decided I got an easy conversion there on the hook route
Certainly not stellar, but consider that his passer rating in that game was 70.4, eight points below the league average of 78.5 that year. Tannehill's rating yesterday was 61, 29 points below the league average of 90.4 this year. Brady threw one pick on 52 attempts in that game, for an interception rate of 1.9%. Tannehill threw one pick on 15 attempts yesterday, for an interception rate of 6.7%, which would've been highest in the league in 2019. Consider also that Brady's team had him throw the ball 52 times in his first playoff game, in his first year as a starter in the league, whereas Tannehill's team had him throw it 15 times, in his seventh year as a starter in the league. So the comparison between "first playoff games" isn't really a fair comparison, nor did the two players even perform similarly on top of that.
And yours is non-existent. No one can critique yours, because you haven't supplied one. Are you just hiding behind your supposed expertise, or would you like to put yourself out there with something?
Tennessee’s playing it late like I don’t care about your front patriots I’m running it anyways. probably cause they had the lead. Henry is doing an excellent job of pressing the los before bouncing anything outside also. 8 man front as in within 3 yards of the los even boxes inside to off the tackles should mean shut down the run doesn’t matter they still gain 4 yards. Hat on hat and Henry downhill
Someone explain to me why Lewan was called for illegal formation on the play before the big 3rd down conversion late. Does he have to be lined up even with the guard there? I thought they were gonna try to call them for not being set a full second which I was gonna blow a gasket if they did cause the pats have lived off of that when they rush to the los to quick snap it forever. And Lewan was set long enough ahh I see it now he has to be covered up. When the tight end shifted over as part of the play change it left the left tackle uncovered I guess. Lol. Still kinda wondering about it
Most definitely. When the opposing QB's passer rating is but 59, and your own running back has over 200 total yards from scrimmage, the onus put on you as quarterback to win the game yourself is very low. In spite of that, the game was a nail-biter, and that was primarily because Tannehill played so poorly. Even just an average game by Tannehill would've resulted in a comfortable and convincing win.
You got people arguing as if Ryan is a true duel threat qb in this thread. he’s not he’s a pocket progression qb who also has the ability to hurt you witb his legs. But they aren’t a primary resort on anything other than zone read in Tennessee’s o or anything miami ever ran with him. there’s a massive difference. You got other guys making one read and taking off with it or heck no reads at all even. But they aren’t pocket progression QBs. And yesterday for example you got a qb taking bad sacks in the first half at least or 3 quarters really in deshaun watson cause he can’t read the field. People will tell you that was a bill O’Brien problem no that was a qb who couldn’t read the field one. So he resorted to back yard football and took bad sacks.
Of course, Mariotta played a better game, the first drive and touchdown didn't mean anything. RT is on to the second round and we are watching him play for the Titans. The Dolphins are playing golf, and we got a fourth round pick
