    They both did play poorly.

What I'm saying is you dont need to play well to help your team win an individual game.

More or less I'm saying this:

Firs career playoff start against a team that is known for basically being unbeatable at home in the playoffs, in bad weather for the passing game to boot IMO.

So yes, it was bad for a regular game, but I dont consider it a regular game.

My definition of helping your team win has nothing to do with final stats. Its did you make any plays that helped seal the victory?

Let's use the NBA for example.

If Dwyane Wade missed every shot in the game but hit the buzzer beater to win, I'd say he helped the team win in the end despite his awful performance. To me the two things arent linked when talking about the sample size of one game.

But how is QBR produced? Is someone watching each play and inputting data based on his assessment of what the QB (and others) did?

The two things are linked because a buzzer-beater was needed in part because of Wade's poor performance. This is in essence why you said Tannehill's performance "won't be enough going forward," because you can't rely on the equivalent of a buzzer-beater in terms of improbability (i.e., Derrick Henry's over 200 total yards, the opposing QB's poor performance, etc.) every week, to overcome that degree of poor quarterback play.

If I start a fire and then grab a hose and extinguish it, I still started it. Again, Tannehill's performance wasn't "harmless." If the question was whether he could make single positive plays in a difficult playoff game, then I'll agree, he answered that question affirmatively. If the question was whether he could play overall in the playoffs in a way that's associated with winning, he still has to answer that one.

Oh no doubt...it was a great team win, and Tannehill contributed with some crucial plays. I'm just saying that he, in isolation, could've done better. That INT pass was a good decision, poor execution off his back foot. They have had great success this year with Tannehill letting his receiver make a play in that scenario, that one just ended up a bad pass. And fumbled snaps just can't happen. Luckily, he and Henry recovered both fumbles.

I'm not saying it was all bad, but the mistakes were ugly...not Josh Allen @ Houston ugly, but still not getting a date on prom night.

His TD pass was gorgeous and dead accurate. He threw a few absolute dimes he won't get credit for, because the Pats PI wasn't called (and I'm sorry..."letting them play" doesn't equal "letting them mug receivers and hold their arms down with the ball incoming.") I thought Vrabel should have challenged at least 2 of them...where it was BLATANT they intentionally held the receivers' arm down...both on 3rd down passes...1 in each half. Would've made a big difference in the narrative and probably on the scoreboard. His pass to Sharpe where they DID actually get a PI call was money too.

The Titans' game plan going in was, "alright Henry...you're going to carry this team tonight," and it worked. The Pats sold out to stop Tannehill...that alone says something. The same Tannehill that we heard reports of in the past, that defensive coordinators didn't have to plan around, 'cuz he wasn't anything special...and Henry made 'em pay. Belichick is legendary for taking away your #1 weapon...and last night, the weapon he went after was Ryan. There were even a few what looked like pass plays that Tannehill audibled out of into a run play, and they worked well, so he was making smart decisions all game.

So overall, decent game, all things considered, just a couple "doh" moments that I'm sure he wishes he had back.

The gameplan needs to be the same next week.. it will be Derrick Henry and Tannehill vs Lamar and Ingram.

i think next week Tannehill needs to use his legs and move the chains on some quarterback draws and sweeps. Also he should look to push the defensive backs with an early deep shot to Aj Brown.

    Haha.

It was beautiful to see Vrabel with the intentional offsides penalties. I hate the rule (clock should stop after one penalty) but love that Billicheat got a taste of his rule bending medicine.

I'm sure they have operational definitions for every type of input that goes into the formula including "pressure", "garbage time", etc... So in that sense it's probably no different than someone having to watch tape to see how many yards were gained or so, and no more or less subjective. The issue is the subjective assumptions hardcoded in the formula, not in the inputs to it.

And most of the inputs are basics of the play like pass or run, yards gained, etc.. as well as what goes into EPA (expected points added): down, distance, time remaining etc... All those types of inputs can just be automatically read off from the play-by-play in real-time (someone is out there looking at the play to produce the play-by-play.. I think the NFL itself does that because they want to control the data).

So most of what goes into QBR won't require any extra human inputting. The remaining stuff like "air yards" or "YAC" (compute one you have the other) will require at least one person but that can be done in real-time too. For something like "pressure" maybe it takes longer, not sure. And stuff like "garbage time" is probably based solely on the play-by-play data, or at least I'd do it that way. I mean.. ESPN isn't going to create a formula they can't compute quickly!

Anyway, regarding the computation of QBR in practice ESPN says this:
    https://www.espn.com/blog/statsinfo...-calculated-we-explain-our-quarterback-rating
So they probably only need a small team to produce QBR.

He surely didn’t do much to help them win..

Fitzpatrick last week showed you how you beat that great defense, from a Qb perspective.

Tom Brady has shown many times that he can reach hi levels of performance in playoff games, this was Ryan’s first game so the comparison isn’t there, Ryan still has to show he can reach a level of performance that will elevate his team..unfortunately he didn’t do that last nite..no big deal, he has another opp next week.

IF ONLY QBs were allowed to deflate footballs to make them easier to throw, eh?

Especially in that cold air where a slightly deflated ball would be easier to grip, throw, and reduce the tension and bounce when it hits the hands of a receiver, making it easier to catch.

Poor Brady. Having to play without even more of an advantage than he already had. :shifty:

I think Vrabel, as a former Patriot, knew he wasn't going to win those uncalled DPI challenges, so didn't bother. Same for the sack where it looked like Van Noy jumped the snap count and appeared to be off-sides.

Man, it's exciting having the Patriots out of the playoffs. Titans are America's team this morning.

Tom Brady has also shown many times that his team can carry him when he has a bad game, and he's had many bad playoffs games... or like in this case last night with Tannehill, there's only a couple of plays he makes, but they were difference makers.

You of all people should be singing his praises after the way he used his legs to move the chains and pick up critical 1st downs last night as that was one of your biggest criticisms of him the past few years.

What are you talking about? Man, c’mon. Your bias is just too much. Tannehill hasn’t shown he can elevate his team??????!

Did you see the disparity between the play of Mariota (your guy) and Tannehill? That team is NIGHT and Day with Tannehill. Without Tannehill they wouldn’t have sniffed the playoffs.

And Tannehill losing in the playoffs in NE or Baltimore will not prove you right. He’s already proven you wrong.

I look at that game very simply, both qbs didn’t play well, titans had a player that dominated physically for four quarters, that was the difference in the ball game.

Ryan didn’t run the ball until late fourth quarter, one read option, one roll out run for a first down, that’s it, he and the team failed to establish his legs as a threat early and throughout the game..he will need to play smarter football to reach a high level of performance in the playoffs, last nite I don’t feel he accomplished that, to many times he was content in the pocket, often drifting back in the face of pressure..He needs to have more of an aggressive nature with his legs.

Ryan needs to conscientiously establish his legs as a threat, a concept he often forgets.

Whether you realize it or not, Tannehill elevated both the Titans and the Dolphins.

Last night he proved you wrong. He made critical plays in a do or die situation in the toughest environment in the NFL, against the #1 defense in the NFL, with the best defensive mind we have ever known. Done deal.

He had the fumble on that long drive towards the end of the game and I actually spoke out loud to a living room full of myself and a cat "there's the Ryan Tannehill that I know." I thought for sure that the Titans would lose the game on a field goal after that play, but luckily the Patriots offense stalled and the Titan D did it's thing. Tannehill...Can't afford another mistake like that against the Ravens next week. I definitely think they can upset them despite Jackson and company looking unstoppable. This is the playoffs and things seem to change a little bit. I expect the Titans to continue riding Henry as much as possible, but at some point Tannehill is going to have to make his mark throwing the football and it will have to be in that game next week. As of right now, I am firmly on board with the Titans giving him a decent looking contract for this seasons performance. I'm going to continue rooting for this team on their current run. It's been fun.

You're missing his 1st down in the 3rd quarter where he picked up 3 yards on 3rd and 1. The run play you mention was another 3rd down conversion where it was 3rd and 2 and he again picked up 3 yards.

First paragraph in the WCVN Boston article posted online I just stumbled on:

“New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick said the Tennessee Titans "made some key plays in critical situations" that were the difference in the team's 20-13 AFC Wild Card loss Saturday night.”

    That ends the debate.

Oh my gosh...didn't that whole series sort of feel like the passing of the torch? Belichek was absolutely livid and it's his own fault since he came up with that petty concept...he did it to Gase 3 plays in a row earlier this year (Gase declined all 3 penalties to make it even more hysterical). With the Pats jumping off-sides though on the 3rd snap it saved Tennessee from getting a more severe penalty....I was DYING laughing!

That is a terrible rule though!

To be honest, I thought the same thing and you could see in his eyes that he was panicking a little...he was nervous the rest of the game. But you have to take that game as a whole-

    - It was his 1st playoff game ever
    - He was playing in a stadium nobody wins in (except FitzMAGIC!)
    - He was facing the league's top defense
    - Belichek sent exotic blitzes galore in the 2nd half

To me, I never cared that RT would have an occasional strip sack or fumble..what drove me nuts is what he did afterwards since he would struggle to shake that stuff off. He's a perfectionist in life and I think mistakes just eat at him while others (Matt Moore comes to mind) could care less if they throw a pick-6....they just shrug it off and get back on the attack. The big difference is that the Titans have Henry and he can take over the game to let RT kind of reset in situations like that.

Overall, he finally had a REALLY BAD game and his team still managed to win. He's going to have to have the game of his life next week though so hopefully he "resets" and finds that inner confidence we saw on display for the last 10 weeks. We all know that RT is flawed and what those flaws actually are, so it's not like this was a shocker in Gillette, in the playoffs while ending the league's biggest current dynasty. The only thing that matters is him getting that confidence back, shaking off those few mistakes and owning the moment.

The Titans are going to the Super Bowl folks...I know that for a fact because it's the ultimate insult to our ability to gauge talent! LOL!

Completely different game, completely different plan from the Pats defense...comparing the two is laziness at best.

He certainly did do things that helped them win...in clutch moments...stuff you wished for actually. Ran for a few key 3rd downs, and threw a completely clutch 3rd and 8 conversion. Audibled to better plays several times. Made completely accurate throws when asked to (aside from the INT). The gameplan was not to have Tannehill driving up and down the field.

Were we watching the same game?

No no McDuff...he's supposed to ignore the OC and wing it the entire game, throwing for hundreds of yards and running for hundreds more. It's all on him, the rest of the team and coaches don't matter, cuz he's supposed to KNOW BETTER!

I get what DJ is talking about with regards to Tannehill. Tannehill is awesome running plays as designed. However, he doesn't do well going off script, or creating a play out of a broken play. Which is fine. But I get what he means.

Ryan Fitzpatrick played better against that same defense on the road one week earlier..using his arm and legs, Pats had a lot to play for..

When Ryan Tannehill figures out he needs to be a dual threat qb then he will prove me wrong..

If the pass game isn’t working great, then take matters into your own hands and find another way to win..like Fitzpatrick does with far less talent..
