Yeah Baltimore is SB bound I think. I won't be rooting for Tennessee in this matchup though given that I live in Baltimore. Was thinking the whole season it would be NE vs. Baltimore in the AFC conference championship, but I'm a lot happier with today's result.

Anyway.. I'm hoping for Saints vs. Ravens SB (always root for Brees.. a guy who should've been the Dolphins QB).

    THIS 1000 TIMES OVER!!!!!!!

How many times have I said...you have to RUN the ball...and defense wins championships. Granted, the Patriots defense was ranked number 1 (and in all fairness, they played well) but they couldn't stop Derrick Henry and the RUN

Yeah, and I've already shown "defense wins championships" isn't accurate. Offense is about 5% more important, and on average you need a well above average offense AND a well above average defense to win. Have to let the data guide the theory, not the other way around.

We shouldn't be re-hashing that debate.

Tannehill still hasn't "won" in the playoffs. He had a passer rating of 61 today. Teams have lost 22 of the 33 playoff games (67%) since 2004 in which they had a passer rating between 55 and 67.

So his performance gave his team more of a chance of losing than of winning. Obviously the rest of his team compensated today, however.

Say what you will about 17 tonight but the 3rd down throw was the dagger. That one throw was better than anything TB12 threw tonight.
On that basis alone Tannehill deserves a ton of credit.

    I'm not sure I agree.

Tannehill was not asked to win.
He outplayed Tom Brady and made a critical throw to basically seal the game. He did enough to win and that's all the Tennessee coaching staff asked of him.

Yes... like I told the guy, the Titans' WANTED Brady to throw the ball. The only real damage the Titans did on the night was running the ball. The Titans stopped it, forced them to throw, and ran the ball to eat the clock and keep NE off the field.

    The plan worked perfectly.

There's no reason why he couldn't have posted a passer rating of let's say 90 amidst the same level of involvement in the game. That level of quarterback play gives a team a much better chance of winning. Surely the message from the coaching staff wasn't, "we don't need you to do a whole lot, and we don't mind if you play poorly, either."

I've watched the past 8 or 9 Titans games and tonight was Tannehill's worst showing by far...but it didn't matter! So darn proud of those guys closing out the game and ending a dynasty...I GUARANTEE you that 30 other teams are celebrating that as well. KC must be over the moon with that win!

Now on to Baltimore, who is definitely the scariest team in the league right now (besides the Titans). Really looking forward to enjoying more postseason with you fine Miami Dolphins fans! Go Titans!

well the gameplan was pretty simple in this one. play good D. Let Henry pound the rock down their throat. Use Ryan when you need him since he typically struggles playing in NE. That TD pass he threw was nice, that pick... not so much. The fumble, seemed like typical RT to me. That's a good D they beat tonight though, especially come playoff time.

I'm actually a bit surprised... it seems the Pat's focused more on shutting down the Titans passing game than they did to stopping Henry. If I was NE, I would have game planned for RT to beat me, especially given how they've handled him in the past. Instead, they seemed to shut down the passing game more, and let Henry run all over them, or Henry is just that good. I think it's a combo though.

Look, I'll still say this, his numbers wont jump off the page tonight, and I'm sure some folks here will appear to bash the guy, but Ryan's got a playoff win, is moving on with his team, and we're done for the year. Tonights game is a good example of why football is a team game. Especially when you look back at what Ryan has done with the Titans since taking over the starting role. Sometimes it's been him. Sometimes it's been DH. Sometimes it's both. It's a TEAM game. It's that simple. Our former QB's team is moving on, and has taken down the Cheatriots.

It's time for us all to celebrate regardless of your thoughts on Ryan Tannehill!

Tannehill played poorly tonight and I noticed in the 3rd quarter, nerves were getting to him on the sideline after that strip sack. It's his first playoff game though and most QB's don't win their debut, so luckily we had Henry playing like a bull and carrying the team to victory.

At the same time though, if the Titans had lost we'd be here talking about that easy dropped pick-6 in the first half, so I'm personally not judging RT too harshly. He's had a great season and had to gain some real confidence riding into next week at Baltimore.

That Titans offensive line was opening holes for Henry big enough to drive a mid-sized sedan through...they physically beat the <word I can't say here> out of New England's front 7. That was truly the story of the game today.

In terms of regular season passer rating surrendered, Tannehill faced the best team in the league this week, and he will be facing the second-best team in the league next week.

that titan fan that keeps posting on these boards said if Vrabel is smart he would copy what Miami did and i disagreed.. what we did to the Patriots was improbable.. they underestimated the Dolphins big time, and they paid for it. They slept on Parker, They let a journeyman quarterback destroy their secondary at their house on 41 pass attempts.. that never happens against a Belichick defense in Foxborough.

the plan was exactly as i said it should be, run it through Derrick Henry all game and give yourself a coin flip chance of winning in the 4th quarter.

had Tannehill attempted 25 passing attempts, the Patriots are advancing. That means more defensive stops. Henry was moving the chains at ease.

Don’t forget that on the drive where Tannehill fumbled he also had some clutch 3rd down plays.

The toss to Dion Lewis under duress moved the chains. And also the play where he kept the option and ran for a first.

Both were 3rd down conversions in the 4th quarter that got them in scoring position to begin with.

Tannehill won today. His 2 or 3 "clutch" throws, including the TD, and the HUGE 3 and 8 conversion pass for 11 yards to convert the first down at the end of the 4th quarter, more than made up for Brady's meaningless 20 completions and 200 yards.

You should seriously take up another sport that isn't so team oriented. You don't seem to grasp the concept that a group of 11 guys has to act in concert in order to succeed.

Maybe try table tennis or bowling.

Here's Brady's post season record. You'll find MANY subpar performances where the team carried him - https://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/B/BradTo00/gamelog/post/

Here's Peyton Mannings. MANY of his postseason games are far worse as well - https://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/M/MannPe00/gamelog/post/

    Here's Marino's post season record - https://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/M/MariDa00/gamelog/post/

The teams they played for ONLY made the playoffs due to them playing well. Tannehill posted an average passer rating in comparison to much of what's list at those links.

He lead an offense that beat the NE Patriots in the playoffs at home in Foxboro. That's a huge accomplishment in itself.

Did Tennessee's defense shut down Brady and the Patriots' offense....or did the Patriots and Brady not perform offensively?

That pass alone was more clutch, i.e. important, than any pass Brady made on the night. He actually had several clutch throws. Some didn't count due to DPI or penalty.

Regardless, this win for him was HUGE.

Yet in the post you quoted, I said his team compensated for him today.

The point I responded to was that Tannehill won in the playoffs. That isn't altogether true. His performance today would result in 67 losses in every 100 games in the playoffs.

It's okay to believe he didn't have a good game.

  28. PhinFan1968

And to add to that, those were some seriously blatant PIs that didn't get called. When you're holding a receiver's arm down so he can't make a play on the ball, I'm sorry, that's beyond "let 'em play." I counted three blatant non-calls...two of which were arm-bars on a dime throw on 3rd down. Tannehill can't let that stuff get in his head though.

I'd say a mix of both. There were some good coverages and PBUs, but they dropped their share of passes, and Brady wasn't all that accurate either. Probably more on the Patriots not executing.

If Tannehill is on the winning side, it is a team sport, if Tannehill is on the losing side, he isn't good enough to get his team to win.

Thill had good moments, but not a good game. Ultimately, he made fewer mistakes than Brady, and his teams run game and defense were the better on the day.

He did enough. Probably enough for the truthers to claim his ascension and the haters enough to crow his fall to earth.

The truth is he gets another shot to prove people right, and we can just ****ing not care and celebrate the Pat's looking like complete butt for a good half the season and await a fun off-season.

You're talking out of both sides of your mouth.

Not a SINGLE person has said he had a good game. What has been said is that he made clutch plays when it mattered.

As for the hasn't won in the playoffs BS, you cannot be the QB, the defacto leader of the offense, and not be a winner when you throw a TD, make crucial plays, like the TD and they late 3rd and 8 conversion, help your team win the game, and NOT be a winner. Even in the long history of Brady of Manning having bad games in the playoffs, they still "won".

You tried to make hay earlier tonight with the BS over passer rating, only Brady ended up with a worse passer rating. So no matter how you try slant it, Tannehill is still a playoff game winner and beat Tom Brady in a Playoff game at Home in Foxboro.

67 games be damned. It only takes 2 or 3 to be a SB Champion.

    “Truthers” LoL.

He is likely going to have a long day vs the Ravens next week. While I hope not, it is just a bad matchup for Ryan and crew.

He didn’t play well today, but he made the throw of the game. I’d take the latter every day of the week.

In the likely result of then losing next week, I hope he balls out and throws for 300+ and 4 TDs, just for the privilege to log into this thread and see all the flip flopping everyone starts doing..its predictable as hell.

Hooe I’m wrong and they pull off and even bigger upset @BAL, just don’t see it however.

The point the person was making who started this particular discussion is that, contrary to what some believe, Tannehill has the ability to win in the playoffs.

Now, if by "ability to win," people mean he can perform in a way that's associated with losing in the playoffs and be compensated for by his team, then yes, he has the "ability to win" in the playoffs, as that was demonstrated today.

If what they mean is that he can perform himself in a way that's associated with winning in the playoffs, then that remains to be seen.

I wouldn't take the latter, because the stars need to align by virtue of the rest of the team's performance for that throw to exist. If the Titans' running game and defense don't do what they did tonight, Tannehill is having to do far more than hit a 10-yard out on 3rd and 8 for a critical first down. He's having to march them down the field at crunch time and score points.

I've never done that kind of statistical analysis. It would require looking at the expected distribution of single game stats for any particular matchup between offense and defense, and then using that distribution to calculate the probability of observing the stats you actually observed in the game. The data is out there to do that kind of analysis but it is a MASSIVE undertaking.

So I can't answer that kind of question right now using statistical analysis. Very good question though.

As the great Catfish Hunter once replied to reporters after a losing effort, "The sun don't shine on the same dog's *** all the time."

Here's something for you to chew on... The Pats haven't WON a Wild Card game since 2006.

If he does, we can easily determine whether his contribution is associated with winning or losing.
