Just in case, like me, you've no idea who this guy is:

    "Biography
Chan Gailey was a football coach in the National Football League (NFL) from 1985 to 2016, finishing his career as the offensive coordinator of the New York Jets. Over his twenty years of coaching his teams compiled a cumulative record of 173-145-1. During his career he was a head coach for five seasons, first with the Dallas Cowboys. He led the Cowboys for two seasons, compiling a record of 18-14-0. His next head coaching stint was with the Buffalo Bills from 2010 to 2012, as he led the team to a 16-32-0 record.

During the 1996 season as the offensive coordinator of the Pittsburgh Steelers he coached Jerome Bettis to the Comeback Player of the Year."

I don't know whether to laugh or cry. This is like, the worst hire by any team in the last ten years. It makes no sense at all, we fired a good OC for a dinosaur no-one in their right mind who has seen him call plays would want.

The thing about Gailey is that the majority of his success came before or right after the year 2000. The game isnt the same and his play calling was long in the tooth at that point.

His head coaching stints were all epic failures, which doesnt mean you're a bad OC, but his methods and play calling havent been in line with the league in two decades.

Well, he is here now so I'm going to hope for the best.

If you look at his offensive rankings for his career he had a lot if early success before and around the year 2000 before becoming incredibly inconsistent.

He went from fielding a top 10 offense seemingly every year to fielding a top 10 one year, then outside the top 25, back down lower, up for a while....like a roller coaster.

Best case scenario it's a one year rental and he has one of his "up" seasons.

My real issue is we didnt even attempt to interview possibly better candidates. That is concerning to me. Also O'Shea did a great job considering he didnt have anyone who can be called a starting running back and and terrible OL to work with.

This is the least sexiest, most mediocre hire of all time.

means two more years of Ryan Fitzpatrick and back to back 6-10 seasons. Flores gets fired and start all over again.

This guy is Mike Mularkey bad.

His scheme is outdated, and expect alot of boring extra linemen and max protect, with no sense of putting recievers in position to create separation.

    Horrible hire by the franchise.

I'm not so sure this is a bad move. Gailey has definitely been around the block a bit but maybe a couple years in retirement have allowed him to get some new ideas. Back in the day he was an innovator.

And its pretty clear they have been talking to him for awhile because this happened fast.

I'm a bit surprised by the O'shae firing and a little even more surprised by the Gailey hiring. I don't necessarily have a problem with it, it's just a little startling to me. You have to question what exactly this team has in mind and who it actually plans to keep. What was the issue that led to this? We seem to have no problem releasing players/coaches just as quick as they get here. I don't really like that, and one would even call it a "knee jerk reaction." Following a team that can be prone to those can be frustrating at times, but just like the Landry, Tunsil, Fitzpatrick, and Drake trades, i'll get over it and continue to support the team.

I just quickly skimmed over his tenures as an OC throughout the years. He seems to be hit or miss...One good year with us in 2000 where Lamar Smith was the featured guy on this team. We definitely overachieved that year. We came back down to earth in 2001 and that could be due to just not having a competent quarterback on the roster. We all remember Jay Fielders inability to throw the football downfield and get the job done when it mattered the most.
He had an awful season with the Kansas City Chiefs back in 2008, but again his running backs seemed to flourish and Dwayne Bowe had a great year despite the team going 2-14 along with shuffling quarterbacks constantly. It was also the year Jamaal Charles flashed and would eventually become a superstar running back for them for a few years.
More recently I remember his 2015/16 seasons as the OC in New York for the Jets. Again, the team had a nice offense his first year and were bad the next. Same personnel, they decided to run it back and the team was terrible on offense. Absolutely atrocious! Bilal Powell ended up being their best player just a year after both Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker had amazing seasons. There was disdain in the locker room and many players voiced being unhappy with the way the offense performed (mainly Brandon Marshall).

So in essence, here's what I expect with him as the offensive coordinator next season. It's a spread offense which (correct me if i'm wrong) heavily involves the running backs on the roster both as runners and receivers. Does he use his Tight Ends though? Because Mike Gesicki really came on to end the season and I firmly believe we have a budding talent with him at the position. It would be an absolute shame to ignore him in this offense. I know Tony Gonzalez was heavily involved during his lone season in KC, but we're talking about a first ballot hall of fame type of player here! We're not talking about Jed Weaver! Will Mike Gesicki basically be one of the receivers in the offense despite being labeled a Tight End???? Jeff Cumberland got a whopping (sarcasm) 14 targets for 5 receptions on 77 yards in 2015. Austin Sefarian-Jenkins led them the following year I think with 17 targets at the position. Dating all the way to his Pittsburgh years he simply does not have a history of involving the Tight Ends on his roster (minus the year with Gonzalez who may be the greatest to ever do it at the position). That is at current, my main concern with him taking the job. The guy never uses his Tight Ends as receivers and Mike Gesicki is primed to blow up as a receiving Tight End if he can continue to be featured in the offense next season. I fully expect Parker to have another great season if he stays healthy, and whoever our featured running back is will certainly have the opportunity to put up some good numbers as well. But all that is for nothing if the offense remains stagnant and we don't involve our talented players that we do have (like Gesicki). We started winning games when we started to throw to Mike G. It needs to continue because that is the ultimate goal right? To win? I don't know, maybe someone can clear this up for me. I'm not the greatest football head out there, i'm just looking at the past stats and they are absolutely startling to me that he has never really involved that position on offense in terms of downfield threat. Quite Frankly, I'm terrified at the thought of us not involving Mike Gesicki because of a systematic fit or lack thereof.
(I hope you read this in Stephen A Smith form)

Here's a link about his tenure with Jets and him simply not having the talent at the positions to do anything. It states that they eventually used Quincy Enunwa as a Tight End and he did have a nice year.

Gailey has been involved with numerous teams around the league. His connections may prove extremely valuable in luring other capable coaches to come in and join the team. I don't see an obvious Flores-Gailey connection so, Grier may be the architect behind this move.
    It'll be interesting to watch.

I can't say for sure, but based on his history as an offensive coordinator, you can expect us to look at upgrading the running back position with a guy who is a dual threat out of the backfield. Other than that, I don't know. I'm terrified that he will ignore Gesicki in this offense which would be an absolute travesty.

On the surface, I am disappointed with the Gailey hire. Unless he was specifically brought in for Fitzpatrick, I don’t understand why we would do it because I am concerned his system is antiquated. Hopefully, he wasn’t complacent during his time out of the league, and he has worked hard to perfect his craft and modernize his scheme. I thought we did pretty good this year considering who we had to work with. I hate the thought of us regressing even further. I am hopeful that this will work out for us, but my optimism for our team has gone down a notch or two.

I dont think this is about Fitzpatrick... if we are firing a coach to bring in another coach for Fitzpatrick, a journeyman quarterback that will turn 38 next year.. then we may be setting ourselves back. Fitzpatrick should not be guaranteed anything next offseason and should be competing for the starting role at best..

theres going to be a deep free agent pool of stopgap quarterbacks, quarterbacks more talented than Fitz. If we dont draft a qb we are looking st Rivers, Alex Smith, Eli, Mariota (no thanks) etc.. but you guys are telling me we fired Oshea and brought in Gailey because of Fitz? Let us all join in virtual circle and pray that is not true. That cant be true, it just cant.

If I were to guess I would say Jim Caldwell is not coming back and Flores still wants to have an experienced person. They want Chan Gailey to do that role but he doesn't want to come out of retirement as a consultant, so they gave him the offensive coordinator role.

People tend to think of coordinators as very specific jobs when they are more blobs. Chan being offensive coordinator does not mean he is crafting the offense, calling the plays, and being the person who runs the offense. It means he is the head of the team that is doing so.

All I am saying is that it is a little early for doom and gloom on this hire.

Though I am still shocked by Chad O'Shea, who I thought did a pretty good job.

It's not like the OC is just someone who takes what his underlings do and unifies it.

It's his job to have a vision and lead his team in the direction of accomplishing it. Given his recent history I really doubt his vision is a good one.

The OC takes the HC's vision and leads his team in that direction to accomplinishing it with the help of his "underlings". However they are not really underlings in that sense. There is a reason why the NFL does not consider OC and WR coach to be different enough to have OC be a vertical move.

It is more of a collective and each team is a little bit different in how much of the offense is the OC's vision.

I'm conflicted about this hire, but Flores has earned my trust. Off the top of my head, here are some pros/cons about Gailey and this entire situation:

    Pros:
    • Gailey runs a fun offense that utilizes multiple receiver sets and emphasizes speed to create mismatches.
    • He may be a dinosaur, but his system is not. In fact, he was one of the first to endorse the spread/mobile QB offense as a truly NFL-worthy concept.
    • Not many first-time head coaches will fire a coordinator one-year into the regime, and such a decision is only a risk if your head coach doesn't have connections. Flores clearly does, and this move further shows that our coach won't be content with mediocrity. Was O'Shea good enough for an average OC gig? Probably--and that's not good enough for Flores.
    • People scoffed at Greg Roman OC hires throughout the decade too, but as it turns out, his system was before its time. Granted, he has a superstar at QB to work with, but there is no denying that his offense has captivated the NFL. It's a long-shot, but Gailey could produce similar results with a similar scheme.

    Cons:

    • I'm worried that the Gailey signing signals a Fitzpatrick future for the Dolphins, and I truly hope they haven't fallen into the trap of believing in him as a franchise signal caller. There are other reasons to hire Gailey, sure, but the longstanding Fitz-Gailey connection may imply that the Dolphins like Fitzpatrick long-term. This would be a career-ending mistake for Flores and the Dolphins.
    • While Gailey's concepts have been said to be easy for young players to understand and execute, they have also been said to be simplistic and easily identified by opposing defenses. Unless he has reformed some of his concepts, Gailey is a high-floor low-ceiling coordinator.
    • The Dolphins are choosing potential over continuity with a low-ceiling coordinator. I would have preferred to see a second season in O'Shea's offense from guys like DVP, Gesicki, and Williams.

It's also important to note that Gailey may not end up being the in-game playcaller. There are rumors circulating that he's been brought on to assist with QB development and run-game management, and in fact, Jerry Schuplinski would be the in-game coordinator. No confirmation yet. Either way, I believe Flores when he says that he made this decision in the best interest of the franchise. He's given me no reason to doubt him.

If Gailey is here to bring the spread offense, then a college QB is probably in our near future, but with the connection between Gailey and Fitz you mentioned, it could mean that Tua is target. Basically build an offense Tua will thrive in, while letting the vet here also thrive in it until Tua is ready.

I was going to go with, 'Was Norv Turner not available?'.

This seems like a bizarre hire on so many levels. We ensure there will be a 4-8 game learning curve to start the 2020 season, and with a guy that will probably retire again in 1-2 years (actually this applies to Fitz and Gailey). He didn't have that much success with Fitz, so no reason to pair them back up, right?

Is Gailey going to train his replacement and we'll keep the same system moving forward? That might be okay, I guess.

The 4-8 game learning curve is the thing i hate the most about this.. and yes, this old man is going to collect his last few checks and retire in 2 years. He turns 68 in about a week..

Why not just fire Flores and hire Don Shula while we are at it.. we can wheelchair him to the sidelines.. it would be like having Joe Paterno as head coachz
