''On Monday the New York Jets announced that Westhoff, who left his job at the end of last season for physical reasons, was being rehired to run the club's special teams again. Good for Westhoff because he has recovered medically. And it is good for the Jets. But I wonder how good that is for the Dolphins?'' link Dolphins In Depth Crappy move by Mike. He had to know he'd be coaching the stinkin jets. He should not have been at camp.
Damn. If I'd have known that putting "Attended one session of Dolphins practice" on my resume would've landed me the job, I'd have applied last week. Pretty big "whatever" move five days before the season opener.
Who cares, they get a guy that saw how intense and hungry our team is and we got Chad Pennington that knows their entire playbook. You tell me which will make the bigger impact come week one.
I suppose since he wasn't OFFICIALLY a member of the Miami Dolphins there's nothing that can be done about it. That was just Bill Parcells being stupid. Which he seems to do quite often. Though it's still a pretty low and underhanded thing to do. I sure hope we stomp the hell out of the jets sunday.
Geez, he attended a practice...so did a lot of people...True, he may be able to wrest a little more info than most of us from his experience, but geez...no need to beat the guy up. Westhoff has a history here. In fact, I thought, before reading the article that he was interviewed or asked for a position here not just attended a practice. Too bad, he's one of the best STs coaches around. I still hate Wanny for, among other things, firing Westhoff. But seriously, he couldn't gain too much of an edge by attending a practice...now if he'd have been in meetings and film study, that might be different. I dislike the jests like we all do, but geez guys...have a heart...
everything the Jets do, wreaks of desperation to me. I'd like to see the payday he got, Mangina probably begged him to take the job.
The way this franchise has turned around since Bill Pacells hiring speaks loudly that he may know alot more about what he's doing than you think he does. Sometimes judging someones decisions or moves on the job requires an understanding in the field. That's something most people, including on message boards like these don't have. It's always popular in our culture to bash the guys on the top, but till you are sitting there in that top position I doubt you really understand much about what is really going on. So exactly what has he done that was so stupid since taking over in your opinion?
Westhoff is a ST's guru. 5 days before the season or not, his presence will have a major impact. As for being at a Phins practice, whatever. I don't expect him to gather to much info from one day, and even if he does I'm sure Mangini already has plenty of things in mind to make the Phins lives a living hell.
I don't necessarily mean for TD's - thought that would be nice. Just talking good field position. Hell I would be thrilled if the Jet's only kicked the ball off one time to start a half and punted the rest of the game.
Or the 30+ year NFL resume... I don't think that insulting someone's intelligence is something to be proud of regardless, especially if it is completely baseless...
If you want the definition of stupid you have to go no further than our last three coaches. I sure don't see the coaches Parcells assembled as stupid, I don't see the changes he has made in this franchise already as stupid, I really don't see bringing in a young GM like Ireland as being stupid. I definitely don't see bringing in Pennington as stupid or rebuilding our terrible offensive line in one offseason as stupid. How about taking our salary cap from being one of the worst to one of the best as stupid? I know one thing for sure he has taken a franchise that was a laughing stock and brought it back to repectability and kept our draft choices while doing it. Parcells may be called or known as a lot of things but I don't think stupid is one of them, but thats JMO. Oh yes, I forgot one other thing, he has made our roster one of the youngest rosters in the NFL.
If Parcells is stupid, then give me stupid ANY day. I'll bet the Jests fans didn't think Parcells was stupid when he took over their 1-15 team and took them to the AFC championship game 2 years later. And if their stupid RB hadn't fumbled the game away Parcells would have taken them to the SB that year. The players handed that game over to Denver, not the coach.
Westhoff has some insight on Dolphins? From PFT...ProFootballTalk.com - Rumor Mill Should be an interesting year with three coaching staffs from the Tuna Tree in the same division. Armando Salguero raises an intriguing point regarding the return of special teams coach Mike Westhoff to the New York Jets. Westhoff resigned from the Jets after the 2007 season due to medical reasons. While recovering, he attended several Dolphins practices. “So he got an up-close and personal view of Miami’s practice, personnel and preparations,” Salguero explains. Though no one has done anything wrong on this one, it’s unusual that the typically secretive Bill Parcells would have allowed something like this to go down. Our guess is that Parcells was merely being charitable with a guy who had to leave the game for reasons beyond his control, not realizing that Westhoff might surface again with the very team that the Fins will play twice this year, including at home in Week One. Still, the right thing for the Jets to do at this point would be to ask Westhoff nothing about what he saw while he was at Miami practices. Though the special-teams aspects are something Westhoff isn’t likely to forget as he does his job with the team, the Jets shouldn’t try to pick his brain as to other stuff that he witnessed while watching the team practice. Then again, maybe Parcells knew damn well what was happening and he had the team do stuff on the days Westhoff was present that the team has no plans of doing this season.
Actually, all four coaching staffs in the division have their ties to Bill Parcells. Dick Jauron is generally considered part of the Mike Holmgren tree, but he was the defensive coordintor for the Jaguars under Tom Coughlin before he got his first head coaching job.
If Westoff is friendly enough with Parcells to be invited to practice, I'm fairly skeptical he's going to rat on what he saw. Especially when you consider he probably wasnt there with scouting in mind...
I think he spills everything he saw at our practices. He is on another team. It is ALL about winning. There is no honor system anymore. Just win.
I doubt when he was at practice he was paying close attention to the field. Perhaps during conversational pauses he watched some but I doubt any helpful notes were taken. Regardless I can't imagine this being a deciding factor in the game. If we come fired up and ready to play on Sunday I could careless who knows what. At the end of the day you still get a hat on hat and go play football. Lets Go Fins. Start Cranking it up!
