Hmmmmmmm.... Seems to me like the tide is starting to turn on Rosen. Like I keep saying, you gotta be patient with this kid. Rosen has elite traits. At times, he has elite ball placement. It is just not yet consistent. You see flashes of it. Rosen's worst trait is his processing time. So what do we need to do about it?

There has long been a debate about whether it is wiser to play or sit a young QB. I know the answer to this conundrum. You have to take each QB on a case by case basis. The QB that struggles to learn the playbook and is mentally overwhelmed is the prime candidate to take year learning from the sideline. Essentially, they need to study to improve their football IQ.

Rosen on the other hand, has to improve his processing speed. We are talking about reading the field and making a decision a fraction of a second faster. The only way to improve this is live reps. Remember how I was talking about that elite ball placement that is inconsistent. How do you make that more consistent? Live reps. I really don't see how sitting on the sideline helps him hone either of these skills.

Fitzmagic is seemingly on a new team every two years. So when he comes in and is better, it is the expectation. Rosen is steadily improving. I keep saying that we need to start him week one. Seriously, if he comes out week 1 and goes 13-26 0 TDS and 5 INTS, it wouldn't bother me in the slightest. I am looking for 4 or 5 consistent games by the end of the season where we see him playing at a consistent, high level. The road to success with a young QB is going to be bumpy, but finding a the answer is worth the hardships.

Can the Will Holden experiment be over now? He stunk in college and now he's stinkin' it up in the pros.

The main reason I don't think Rosen will pan out is precisely because processing speed is his issue, and I don't think you can teach that if it's still an issue after the guy has had some time to adjust to the NFL. You can improve football IQ as long as the person is given sufficient time to process the information, but learning to make good decisions quickly after the QB has been in the NFL for awhile.. yeah I don't know.

And yes I do think a single year is sufficient to get an idea of how severe the issue is. Well we'll see, but my prediction is that he'll still have this processing speed issue – throwing a good ball too late or throwing it in the wrong spot or just not seeing defenders – throughout the season if he wins the starting job.

IMO "flashes" is the worst way to evaluate a QB. Consistent accuracy and processing time are what you look for. And those don't tend to improve significantly.

Have you ever gotten better and more consistent at something with practice?

As one who is deficient in both IQ and processing speed I find the only way for me to compensate is preparation. Thankfully every day life isn’t like an NFL pass rush:-). We all know Rosen has a high IQ and preparation could help him in some situations; however, like you, I don't believe it can help him in all situations because if the DC forces him to think he may not get there fast enough. Maybe experience will help him if that is the case, but will he keep getting the opportunities if he struggles a lot.

Sure, but history has repeatedly proven that accuracy is not something that improves dramatically with time. That's just a fact. So you're not arguing with me. You're arguing with history.

Did Rosen have accuracy issues in college?

The Dolphins might not have the best defense this year, but thank goodness they'll be smarter by putting players in better position to succeed and having far more intelligence with scheme, strategy, and playcalling. If there's one single thing that excites me about this team, it's simply ditching the putrid 4-3 with wide 9 principles for a multiple scheme to match what offenses are trying to do.

    *****************

Hi guys, just a heads up, I may not be able to do much with this thread this week. This morning I was selected for jury duty, so with that, and my department at work being down a senior member due to vacation, I'm going to be up to my neck. I'll probably still post a few updates in the evenings, but in general, I don't expect to be able to maintain the daily posts. Apologies.

If anyone else wants to have go - as always, feel free!

Yes, his accuracy was inconsistent at best. His play in college was not that different from the pros except that in Arizona he started missing the open guys too.

I'm excited about this defense. Now, I still expect it will struggle to start. There will be breakdowns that will need to be ironed out. But over the long haul a smart defense is easier to maintain, year after year, than one built on star players.

What do you think about them trying to field all these true linebackers as OLBs in all these situations where Belichick's usually got guys who are closer to 3-4 OLBs?

So...after listening to Travis’s podcast on the way to work today, I got to thinking about how our guys are picking up the scheme vs. how they did with the previous staff. Our new system seems like it will be variable and a lot of guys seem like they will specialize more. I am hoping it will help them retain things. One thing I don’t want to ever hear again regarding our scheme is, we needed to dumb things down because...

Here’s hoping things are progressing like they should. :-)

I had a look. Nothing of note. Some plays where he impressed but he's 4th back on the depth chart behind Walton - not that that necessarily means anything at this point.

    I'll keep my eyes open.
