He can replace Chad Henne as our latest failed dolphin hope that mediocred his was out the door and up the road to Jacksonville. Man i really liked both those guys and truly wanted them to be the answer.
Nah, they committed NFL suicide by having exploitable weaknesses in their strategies. Philbin by dint of loyalty/inflexibility and Gase by being good at Xs and Os in play design (tactics) but putting together incompatible offensive and defensive strategies. Both those guys showed they can succeed with a HoF QB papering over their cracks, but their aren’t many job openings to be a HC for a team with a HoF QB in their prime. I view Philbin and Gase as both having some of the qualities required to be a very good NFL HC. Both are lacking in key areas that means they will need exceptional player talent to ever have a chance of winning a Super Bowl.
Alternatively the argument is that Tannehill shows enough that when the coach does their job well he can be good enough to win with, but he isn’t good enough to overcome coaching errors. So he kills average coaches because their mistakes get exposed. I think part of this comes back to all the reports about how coachable Tannehill is, he follows the bad instructions when a more independent minded QB would recognize the error and go off script. I wouldn’t say we’ve seen what Tannehill can produce with consistent better than average coaching. However this gets back into the cycle of saying he needs [insert reason] to produce. While I believe that to be true, it’s unrealistic to expect all of the other parts of the machine to be working at 100% efficiency 100% of the time. So your QB needs to be able to produce in adverse conditions if you expect to sustain success in the NFL. Which means it’s time to either move on from Tannehill in 2019 or get the succession plan in order for 2020.
I don't think we could do it because of his contract, but I see Tannehill as a perfect opportunity for another team looking to reap a decent draft pick if they are able to sign Tannehill to a backup QB contract. Injuries happen all the time. If a team is on a run and gets desperate you never know, they just might part with a pick. I have said I think Tannehill would make a good backup QB. He should embrace it. If Matt (boom chicka wah wah) Moore had a nice run no reason why he couldn't too. He just needs to grow in that porn stash and he's all set. ;-)
Dolphins would be dumb to cut THill. He's the best QB in a down market on a reasonable contract for 2 years. Bridgewater hurt his value with his performance audition. A QB will get hurt and Grier needs to extract value for Ryan.
Well, it's already leaked from multiple sources that Tannehill has been told he won't be playing in Miami next season...so I think it's a foregone conclusion unless Flores really fought hard for him today. The only question left is value and whether RT will be cut or traded.
And if you extrapolate the above line of reasoning to the entire league, you end up in a scenario in which to win the Super Bowl you need near-perfect surroundings for Tannehill, while hoping that none of the teams with the league's best QBs experience even above-average surroundings. Here's what I mean, in rough terms: Tannehill in typical surroundings -- QB rating = 94 Tannehill in near-perfect surroundings -- QB rating = 104 League's best QBs in typical surroundings -- QB rating = 104 League's best QBs in near-perfect surroundings -- QB rating = 114 Obviously the situation there is that Tannehill gets beaten by any of the league's best QBs if their surroundings are above-average. So you can talk about all the things Tannehill needs around him to reach his potential, but you'd better hope none of the better QBs are enjoying those same things around them, or they're very likely to beat Tannehill. In the end you have a situation in which Tannehill's winning a Super Bowl is highly improbable, obviously.
Just perusing the forum and seeing all the work your putting in to make things interesting for all of us..
Good guy but I’ve been ready to move on from Tannehill for several seasons now. Excited to see if we can find a franchise QB
Not being able to get some value out of Tanny in a QB starved league would be a big fail to start this rebuild with. As it stands right now, my interest level in watching games this coming season will depend a lot on whether they get a possible Franchise QB versus mostly tanking for the 2020 draft. I'd be okay with either approach, since they are talking a long-term view, but Murray would make things interesting. Either he plays fairly well and we have something to build on for the future, or he struggles badly and we have a high draft pick in 2020 to get another QB. Seems like a win-win to me.
How did you get the 94 qb rating for typical surrounding for Tannehill? What games did you determine were typical surrounding?
