I mean we can, but it usually isnt a good idea. That said, if Rizzi wants to stay in Miami even without a promotion, I think most candidates would consider him because of his familiarity with Grier, the players and organization - not to mention his success. I'm not really a fan of him as a HC though. While the player endorsements are nice, I dont lend them a ton of credence.
Everyone supporting Rizzi is saying the same thing: he's great, just find an amazing offensive coordinator to design the offense and call plays. Oh really? Is that all? Just find a great young OC in a market where there aren't any. GOT IT. Who? Who's available to pair with Rizzi? If we hire him now we're looking at 2-3 losing seasons at least. Our offense may improve some simply with the return of some previously injured starters and FA/draft additions, but I doubt we're finding a long term solution at OC any time soon. Plus, even if we do find a good OC, that person will be poached for a HC job almost immediately because that's the trend in the league right now. Same thing is true, to a lesser degree, for defensive coordinators we're interested in. Last thing we need is to relive the Wannstadt era with an amazing defense and a horrible offense.
You're right about the coordinators, that really would be the hardest thing for Rizzi to bring in, not sure he has many connections in the league. Maybe Bowles as a DC? Don't know about the OC though. Truth is, finding a good coach is really a crapshoot when you think about it. What really determines whether a HC will be successful? We've tried every route from previous successful NFL HC to defensive and offensive coordinators to college coaches, none of them has worked out for us. I'm going to be happy with either Rizzi or Fangio, personally.
It's great that players love him but I'm really interested in his knowledge of both sides of the ball. Great coordinators help, but usually the HC has a specific ideal or system he wants to incorporate and brings in assistants to match that style. It's not as simple as "You are a good HC now find a good OC/DC"
Mando raising the question again, as he did before Gase, is it time the Dolphins hired a HC with experience in the role?
I'm very underwhelmed by our choices but from what's available i think the candidates I'm interested in are: Todd Monken - before the season started I never would have expected Tampa to have the top or near top offense in the league. If we want a dynamic offense this gut is probably our best prospect. Of course we would have to set up an interview first lol Vic Fangio - I like everything about Fangio other than his age. We'll be looking for his replacement in five years probably if we hire him but since We're in rebuilding mode maybe that isn't so bad. Plus he should be able to get good coordinators who would be in an ideal situation when he steps down Brian Flores - Although the Belichik tree kind of sucks I like the fact that they always have a top disciplined team something no coach that comes to Miami can seem to achieve. For that important reason I am willing to roll the dice on this guy RIZZI AND CAMPBELL - Both are the motivation type coaches. I like those types. The ones I don't want MICHIGAN Harbaugh - Forgot which one is which lol. There is something unhinged about this guy. Don't trust him Josh Daniels. To me this is a lesser version of Gase. Bienemy- He has too many weapons in KC. No way to gauge how he'll do with a lesser squad McCarthy - Think his success is tied to Rodgers. Lewis - Too laid back. His players love the guy but in Miami our players would take advantage and hit the nightclub scene with a vengeance
I like Fangio and Munchak the most. Bieniemy is a major roll of the dice and I didn’t even know who Kris Richards was before this week.
I love that in Armando's world, a team can simply call 1-800-ELITE-QB and have one delivered in two days. I similarly love that he suggests hiring a coach with previous experience, who has previously also been fired for failing to achieve success, to coach the young stud QB.
Dolphins are trying to lock down an interview with Eric Bieniemy for this week according to Barry Jackson.
I thought he was already scheduled for Friday? I find him easily the most intriguing by far. I would feel better if he had called plays this year but he's been on the staff a few years. Fangio is probably the best candidate straight up and I'm not worried about his age. He knows how to build defense without question but what does he know about offense? He would have to get a strong OC. With all the support coming out Rizzi I don't know what to think. Clearly his Special Teams units are always ready to go and well coached. He does have some Head coaching experience in college but I forget where. Clearly the players like him and everyone knows the guy has fire and I like that.
Yeah Rizzi is kind of a darkhorse in all this, but I have always liked the guy and the way he carries himself. Even in his interviews I get a feeling like "yeah, i'd follow that guy."

Tom Shannon reckons the Dolphins should be looking for a HC who can coach QB's, says the current list lacks that type, and for that reason, is going wrong.
That's pretty silly. A HC doesn't need to be able to personally shepherd a QB or any player, they need to be able to find the people to do that and manage them. People are getting ridiculous with this stuff.
So...what's the QB coach for? We can't have a HC who isn't an offensive guru, but maybe a defensive guru, and then have a QB coach and OC that coaches up the QB? It has to be the HC?
Silly question here, but what is the status of the other coaches who worked for Gase? The reason why I asked is I noticed on the official site that Gase isn't there, but all the other coaches are. Are they still on the payroll so the new HC has the option to retain them? Note: If you wonder where I am going with this it is because I am beginning to really like Rizzi as our HC. I like that several players have publicly endorsed him. The concern I have is who can he bring along with him. I think in the end if you have a couple of guys who are equally matched the difference would be in who they can bring along. Would Rizzi as HC paired with Loggains as OC be a good pairing? Would Loggains do things different with Rizzi than with Gase? What about Zac Taylor the QB coach of the Rams? Would he be a better pairing with Rizzi?
The old coaches who were under contract still are until they are officially released or ask for termination so they can pursue other options. Retaining Rizzi if he is not promoted is possible if that's what he and the new HC both want. Most of the rest will probably turn over. So, like Gase? Oops.
"The Dolphins are currently interviewing candidates to be their next head coach. However, the team could have their sights on a current NFL coach. According to Pro Football Talk, the Dolphins will “formally” call the Ravens about head coach John Harbaugh."
To be honest I don't buy this line of thought that we need our next head coach to be a QB guru. We just tried that with Adam Gase, though in hindsight was he really a QB guru and offensive genius? I'd argue we bought into a lot of false hype. Mike McCoy was the OC for the Tim Tebow miracle and the first year of Peyton Manning's spell with the Broncos. So during those two seasons Gase was the QB coach for Tebow and Peyton. After that he was the OC for Peyton Manning, but almost anyone could do that job since Peyton was pretty much his own OC. Ok Gase went to Chicago and did alright with Jay Cutler, but if memory serves they ranked in the late teens in total offense. So if we do go for a so-called QB and offensive guru this time, I hope that we get the real deal rather than someone that has made a living off Peyton Manning's record breaking season. With that said, I don't think we need a QB guru as our next head coach. Last thing we need is for the head coach to be splitting time between managing this team and developing one specific player. Obviously it has worked for some teams like the Rams, but I think we need to stop trying to emulate this team or that team because that's the fashionable thing to do. Instead, let's just try to find the right guy for the job that can build this team the right way and get us back on track. Someone that has a prove track record of developing players, managing and getting the best out of them, and someone that has a good network of coaches that he can build a staff with to ensure we get a good balance on both sides of the ball. Let's not put all our eggs in one basket and hope we find the next Sean McVay. Let's just try and find the right guy for this team and stop worrying about what everyone else does and focus on what we can do.
No to vance Joseph. One of the most overrated coaches in the leauge imo. Our defense sucked while he was here and he didnt last more than one season in denver. He has never been very succesfull in his career except for being a decent secondary coach.
Reportedly the initial price is a pair of first rounders, which ... no. Personally, i'd top out at one second rounder. Either Harbaugh wants to be a Raven and coach Jackson long term and will sign an extension, or he doesn't want to be a Raven and we can get him cheap because their FO will say something is better than letting him walk next year. He put in 2 seasons.
Depending on the deal, and I know it sounds crazy, but I would consider 2 first rounders for John Harbaugh. First rounders for us are a crapshoot. I would prefer to have a proven HC. Also, I like the Ravens culture. They play with toughness and if Harbaugh could bring that plus respect from the players, I would be all for it. Now, if his guys hate his guts, that could change it for me. I am hoping for a guy our players love to play for. I should mention that they might be planning to firing him anyway, and could play us for fools to get 2 first round picks. Now that would piss me off to no end. I hope Grier is on his game so that doesn't happen.
You are probably correct. However, there are ways to have your cake and eat it too. Not saying it would be easy, but we might be able to move back up into round 1 and take a guy in the later part of round 1. For me, the question is what would John Harbaugh bring to the table and would having him as our HC be a real difference maker? If it is determined he would not be a huge improvement over what we had and what we could have then by all means we should keep the picks. Do you think Grier will be really aggressive, and wheel and deal this off-season?
