The solution is to not fire everyone in a year where there are no good replacements. If 2019 is a wash anyway, then why not give it one more shot with the current staff? Just stupid.
You don't know that. Really - you don't. Remember when Adam Gase was the hot coaching ticket and supposed savior? Only inside circles know who's a viable candidate. I mean seriously was anyone on this board talking about Frank Reich before the Colts nabbed him? No.
Well I said the same thing, I don't disagree. However I will allow things to unfold because what else can we do.
I've written it about 20 times in other threads but its not salacious and mean so nobody cares. All those reasons aside, you don't fire someone when there aren't any good replacements. This goes for coaches and players. You don't cut your QB when the available options are trash. You don't fire your HC in year 3 when the available options are trash.
Well I suppose we'll both be doing what we've done the past 7 times we've been through this which is to just hope but not expect too much.
This. We have been here before. I’m hoping he has something in the works no one knows about because any top tier candidate will want more control and there are plenty of opportunities for good candidates to pick from. I suppose we’re going to get a college coach IMHO.
May not have been any other choice if the locker room turned on him. Having that toxicity in the building for another lame duck year just wouldn’t be worth it and could cause more issues.
I believe Reich did get some love but I agree for the most part. Personally I have no clue if any of the available options are good. What I do know is that there is more demand than supply for offensive coaches at the moment because over the last 5 years there has been a serious run on young, offensive minded guys. Supply is low, demand is high, we don't have the option to offer the new coach full control, and Ross is still going to be involved in the process. All that is going to make it tough to find a head coach and even tougher to find an OC. Now, we could get lucky. Maybe Ross really does want Harbaugh. I hope I'm wrong, but I know regardless of what happens, making this move during this offseason was extremely risky at best and borderline insanity at worst.
We haven't really seen a true look into all this roster toxicity everyone is talking about. Nobody was talking about ANY of it during the season, but whatever. All I see is a bunch of anonymous quotes saying nobody would be upset if Gase was fired because he was less of a players coach this year. Oh boo-hoo. Guys didn't like working hard because Gase was fighting for his job? Cry me a river. Most reports are being based on anonymous player quotes, but that doesn't mean its Cam Wake bashing Gase. It's probably some third string punt returner who's mad he didn't play.
Ummmm it's pretty clear an overwhelming amount of players hated the guy. It's got nothing to do with not wanting to work hard because Gase was fighting for his job. Honestly, I never thought I'd say this but when I checked the score yesterday for the first time (in the 3rd quarter) inside I thought to myself "good for the players!". That was not a leader of men and they let everyone know it.
FFS, what a **** show. History will not judge us well for this, mark my words. Gaze had his issues, but he wasn’t the weak point in this team.
I’ve read good things about grier. If he had anything to do with last years draft. Besides gesicki. I liked it. We have to start somewhere? It’s replacing the coach that has me sweating bullets.
Our first two interviews are with defensive guys. There are still plenty of well regarded offensive guys too if we want to go that direction. Saying there is nobody is just false and comes off as petulance because you wanted to keep Gase. QB is more of a concern, but only if you are trying to put together a contending team in 2019. Draft-wise, if Murray and Haskins declare, that would also give us some options. Otherwise, we build our draft assets, get younger, cut off ****ty contracts and flip the switch in 2020. How many coaches did the Pats go through before BB? How many did the Saints go through before Sean Payton? If it isn't working, you try again until it does. You can argue that Gase was working if you want, but I think that's a pretty minority opinion.
You're welcome to take everything literally, but when someone says "there are no good coaches" that translates to "there are no coaches that are obviously better than what we just had". When the coach you fire is immediately regarded as the top available candidate for a handful of teams, it was most likely a mistake. But, if you want to argue over semantics go find someone else. Over the last 20 years we're have 10 coaches. That's a coach every 2 years. So we've been getting it wrong for two decades and we're still doing the same thing. Ross, our self deprecating owner who admittedly knows little about football just fired our head coach because he stuck up for his QB and wouldn't cede control. All we're doing is shuffling pieces again. We did nothing more than hit the reset button. I hope I'm wrong, but deep down we all know we're going to be here again in 2-3 years talking about who else to hire.
Look, in my estimation after the last three games there was no going back. Gase was done. I like the two names that have come out as interviewees because that means we are looking at defensive coaches for a change. However they hire I hope they grab Dirk Koetter as their OC. He can coach an offense.
There are no guarantees. Unless a coach is Cam Cameron levels of bad, of course there isn't one that is 100% guaranteed to do better than what we had. That said, there is also no guarantee they won't do better. Many of us would rather try. Maybe it doesn't work. If not, you try again until you get one. You don't tread water with "kind of OK" for year after year after year and expect any better.
Don't question my fanhood. Focus more on adjusting your judgement of coaches. The man unquestionably tanked into the end of the year. WOW man, what an awesome guy. Definite keeper.
All I know is that I've never rooted for the Dolphins to lose, or have ever been happy or content with the Dolphins losing. That's not a choice, it's just how fandom works...for the rest of us.
It's all been said before, but he didn't have his QB for 3/4ths of the past two seasons. We also started this year strong with his roster, looked great, and then it all fell apart with injury after injury. People think that's making excuses and I get that, but we finished 1 game below .500 without most of our top talent. Seven wins with 2nd stringers is impressive to me- 14 teams did the same or worse with their core starters on the field. If we had the majority of our roster I think we would have been an 11-12 win team this season. And yes, I understand the counter-argument as well. All teams have injuries. But how many teams lost 60%+ of their O line for the vast majority of the season? And how many of those teams lost their QB, WR1 and WR2 for the majority of the season as well? Then throw in their two top corners out (one who's leading the league in several categories), most of their D line, etc...our situation was definitely unique- we basically lost our trenches completely. Yet we still won 7 games- to me that's impressive. My biggest gripe is that we heard Gase would reinvent the offense and we'd be a high powered scoring team. We started 1-5, won 9 of 10 in 2016 and then never saw that team on the field again...except for the first three wins this season and the loss to NE. Our "starting" team under Gase is 13-2 in my book. That's extremely frustrating to me because we have no idea what could happen in 2019 with the whole team back- the next head coach is inheriting a very good roster though and he will get all the credit for Gase's vision. Upgrade the line and we're a playoff team right off the bat.
Except, the problem with that theory is all the successful people in the NFL disagree with you and instead say that changing regimes over and over is what leads to mediocrity.
The successful people that got a job due to a regime change? Hmm, fascinating. There is one thing that will keep a job - success. Gase didn't. You can make excuses for that if you want. Some of us weren't willing to buy those excuses, looked beyond them and saw major flaws. That apparently includes our team owner and GM and many of the players. If you want to believe otherwise, go for it. But as for Miami, it's done. There is no formula. There is no magic bullet. There is no guarantee. You review the evidence and make a decision. Sometimes it's to give Philbin an extra year and you end up firing him halfway through the season. Sometimes it's to pull the plug and wish Gase the best as you move on.
Was gase really being a head coach. They showed him alone drawing up plays (that didn’t work) while the game was going on? He had no idea what was going on in the game. The assistant was coaching. And those were some important moments for him to ignore the whole team?
I think it was a face saving move on behalf of Tannenbaum by Ross. You are not fired, but effectively removed from the team in any meaningful way. I think Grier having the final call, along with working with a new coach to get him the players he wants, could be a good combination. I think Gase will do well if he ends up with the Browns, as they have a lot of talent and a QB to build around. It seems like he was already checked out on the Dolphins through the last half of this season. Even better, I'd like to see him go to Denver and swing a trade to take Tanny with him.
Does t matter anymore everyone Gase is no longer a Dolphin. That page has turned for the better or worse. Let’s hope for the best and that we beat the odds this time!
I would love to see him go to Cleveland....only to trade Landry to the next worst team in football. The Browns are definitely up and coming so I think that would be a great job to land.
Gase coached this team like he was still a damn offensive coordinator and ironically the production was downright offensive.
