I'm still 90% sure Ross will give Gase one more year. Maybe Ross will force/allow Gase to get a veteran DC (which would be a good thing). Up to yesterday, I was mostly okay with this (not that I can change it, right?). Watching Gase give up on that last third and long with the game on the line though? Gase was playing to give his punter 5 more yds. Even if you think there is only a 20% chance of getting that first down/PI call, you have to put the ball in Tanny's hands. Try to WIN the game. If that play fails you are punting and hoping your defense will save the game for you. Which puts you exactly in the same position that we ended up in after that failed run, EXCEPT you passed up a realistic chance at moving the chains. I don't want a coach who is too afraid of failure to take a chance at winning.
And to me if you don't trust the Oline, which is basically what he said in his presser then rollout or run a RPO. Still better even if you fail. At least you tried.
Yeah, but in his presser he specifically mentioned the o-line not picking up stunts ALL YEAR. He knows this. Hell, anyone who has watched the Dolphins this season knows this, so why not TEACH them? Why not get your o-line coach to teach them? I'll tell you why..Gase is not a teacher. And being a teacher is the best trait a HC can have. He's uncreative, predictable, and unable to coach in the present. Which are all also extremely important.
Huge red flag with Gase admitting the OL was not ready to do their job. Yes, lots of injuries, but even scrubs should be coached up enough to handle stunts 50% of the time.
Great point not failure but a coach who does not realize that yesterday was a must win and we may end up in a tie with colts if things pan out and still miss out, was all around horrible coaching!!!!
quote by gase "everybody goes and looks at the result and all the good things get forgotten about" in all honesty is this guy serious? how many times can he play the poor me card? he is under .500 for his career with Miami all people care about is wins. you lost your season by your choices im seriously in aww right now. this guy is something else!!!
Huh? That's like saying my starting grade was a "D", but now that I am getting "C's" everybody should be happy. It's a process when it's preseason. It's a process when it's the 1st quarter of the season. It's a ****ing losing mentality when it's a must win game for a chance at the playoffs!!
yeah this is a huge point. Actually. In basketball right now the hot new trait in coaches is being able to develop youngsters. I think this is overlooked in the nfl. If not overlooked then at least undervalued. I was like to see more emphasis on teaching. Maybe Raekwan would have had a better year if the LB coach was a better teacher
Wow.. poll is now at 18 for firing Gase and 22 against. I think when I voted (before the game) there were only 6 votes for firing Gase and close to 20 against. This game really did change a lot of people's minds (glad to see that). EDIT: now 22-22
If they bring him back he'll be fired mid season next year. Let's not waste another year on this bum.
My top 3 candidates (no particular order)... Dave Toub - Asst. Head Coach of the KC Chiefs. Andy Reid disciples seem to be having alot of success lately. Matt Nagy is doing awesome for the Bears & Doug Pederson just won the superbowl with Philly. Pete Carmichael - Off. Coordinator for the Saints. 10 years as O-coordinator with Sean Payton and Drew Brees...something had to rub off. John Harbaugh - He may not be available because Lamar Jackson may have saved his job. You know, Lamar Jackson...the QB we should have drafted.
I don't really see any teaching. It's one thing to have a scheme you trust and talent acquisition. It's another to develop the actual personnel. Remember, this is a coach who employed a coke head to fix the biggest problem on this team - the offensive line. I don't trust any of the position coaches outside of Rizzi.
It’s not as if stunts were suddenly invented during the season, they’ve only been a staple of DL play for 50 years or so. I could understand that way of thinking if the Colts were doing something new the league had never seen before. It isn’t like when the Steelers introduced the zone blitz. It isn’t like when we introduced the wildcate. Stunts aren’t new, there is no excuse for not being able to handle stunts. If you can’t handle stunts then you will see nothing but stunts until you do.
It's not that our linemen don't know what to do. It's that because of injuries we are playing linemen that are slower and weaker with inferior technique than our injured starters. Also we lost our center early in the game. Offensive line play relies on communication, most of which runs through the center. How good do you think the communication was with our third or fourth string center calling out the protections?
Any OL worth their salt has been seeing stunts since high school. Even a backup NFL OL is in the top 1% of the top 1% of people who start playing the game. I assume you’ve seen the full 1985 game where Dan Marino guts the Bears on MNF. In that game we were down 3 starting OL and we beat one of the best defenses in history. By the end of the season they were down all 5 season starting OL yet still made it to the AFC championship game. Of course a great QB can make their OL look better, but Don Shula’s teams always were able operate at a high level when the backups came in. It is unrealistic to expect backups to play at pro bowl levels, I’d happily settle for barely adequate. What we’ve seen is completely inadequate. That goes to player acquisition and coaching up of talent. We shouldn’t have players that bad on our roster. At some point we need to find an OL coach who can get 4th round or later players to be able to contribute. We need to find a scout who can identify players who will contribute.
Are we talking about Madden NFL or real life football? Gase or the OL Coach has done an excellent job with the offensive line. We aren't even talking anymore about 2nd stringers. Technically, we are talking about 3rd and 4th stringers. Overall they did a good job today for who they are. Think about it. Our third and fiurth stringers under Gase compose a better offensive line than we had under the entire philbin regime with dallas thomas and company. I personally think he just overthought it in the 4th qtr. He knew stunts were dicey so he went into twilight zone mode and called horrible plays for two series. He should have run on first and second thrown on third. Even if they were playing the run we should get two yards each carry so it puts us in 3rd and 6. That's 50/50. I'll take those odds rather than some wr screen that has a 10 percent Chance of success. Bottom line is he was given crap from philbin and turned it into a good unit and unfortunately injuries decimated it but thankfully haven't destroyed it. There are areas where we can be critical of Gase. Offensive line isn't really one of them considering what He's had to work with Agree that we need to do a better job or find a scout who can identify OL talent in the draft. Asiata looks like another bust. The ones under Gase were all brought in under FA. Can't keep doing that. Need to find some in the draft
I might be over reacting, but I really hate the tightrope we’ve been walking with our season’s success seeming to depend on all 5 starting OL remaining healthy for years now.
I am tired that the biggest weak link in the offensive line each year is Gase's friend. I am pro loyalty, however, Larsen has been terrible. Before that Bushrod was terrible.
Sometimes it's not just wins and losses, but the direction you are going in. Team is not moving in the right direction.
Picking a HC - toughest thing to do in the NFL? Seems like it, at least from my perspective, and because it's so difficult to analyse, I keep my distance from it. If Ross changes the HC, I hope it goes well -obviously. If it he doesn't then I'm okay with Gase for now because I believe Gase it still learning. I believe he's a guy who has to have a mental grasp of everything in order to get his bearings and make good choices. All this up and down, staff changes, injuries etc. has been a lot to adjust to and when you're trying to evaluate things that can really mess up the process. I think Gase will be in this league as a HC for a while. I can't guarantee it, but that's my guess. If he isn't the guy, then obviously I'd like to move on asap. But what if he is, or could be - then obviously we would want to be patient. How do you tell the difference? I guess you can look at other HC's and their timelines and say that he needs to follow that pattern, but my suspicion is that, as with everything else in football, it's never that simple. There are always variables and other factors. Remember he just ditched a drug-addicted OL coach, and brought in several new guys, some of whom were having praises sung about them. He's had his starting QB injured for what, about half his tenure? That's a lot of change, not to mention other roster issues. He definitely makes some annoying play calls, and I think he may be making the mistake of having too complicated a set of plays - whereby if everyone doesn't perform perfectly it just won't work. That's a learning curve. Either he'll become more of a dictator like Belichick and have to build a culture around being very, very detail focused, with coaches to match, and/or he'll have to create a more resilient set of plays. If he doesn't learn, and can't get the culture to change, then he'll be done. I hope that he figures it out, and soon. And I can wait one, maybe two years for that. My bigger question? GM. I'm not still convinced by Tannenbaum. I suspect a disconnect between Tannenbaum and Gase and if that's the case, then I want Gase to win. I just don't believe a team can be successful with a handcuffed HC. Give him the power and authority to do whatever he wants to do, because win or lose, he'll get the blame. It's the one thing that concerned me most when Gase was hired - the fact Ross told him, apparently, that he HAD to use Tannehill, that he HAD to call the plays, and to a lesser extent, he had to work with Tannenbaum. The last one is common in the NFL, and a fact of life. But if I were the owner, I'd choose my HC as the leader of the entire team, and let him build it from there.
I disagree- it's ALWAYS about wins and losses because that's the only thing that matters in December/January. I do agree with you that we're headed in the wrong direction though and it's more leadership than anything. I do think we have enough talent to be a serious contender...we're just not maximizing it. At 5-6 with 3 weaker teams and two good ones left, about the best we can hope for is an 8-8 season. That's certainly not this team's best though and it has to be addressed this off-season.
Say it again. He was there for the taking at 32 with the Eagles desperate to trade down, all we had to do was move up 10 spots from #42
Again though, if you want a 4th round or later pick to be a contributor you're going to have to teach them. Very rarely do you have guys picked that late that can just be dropped in and play. And the Dolphins' coaches don't teach any of their players anything.
