LMAO, I have no idea how that wasn't plainly obvious. Welcome to the Miami Dolphins football forum though.....where EVERYBODY has a freakin' opinion. Maybe we've become so numb to it over the years that we just can't recognize sarcasm anymore. =) PS- Global warming was actually caused by Tony Sparano and his TD celebrations. The polar caps just couldn't handle that level of stress from a single human.
Yep! One of the many negatives of social media. It's nice to come and talk Dolphins football, I like hearing the varied opinions, but a lot of folks are so serious they take the fun out of it for me.
Excuse me? Sparano and TD celebrations does not compute. I think it was the friction of the ball moving through the goal posts during a field goal that causes Global Warming.
Sparano's touchdown celebrations were him jumping around like a madman. It was about 100x his fist pump for field goals. Myself I always found the making fun of the fist pump an insult to that man's passion. He put his heart and soul on the line every week for the Miami Dolphins. He was the type of person who wore his emotions on the sleeve. While I think Gase is a better coach, I much prefer the sideline deminer of Sparano. he would be a very fun coach to play for.
Record after 42 games: Sparano Regular: 23-19, Post: 0-1 Gase Regular: 21-21, Post: 0-1 Offense/defense rank PPG by year: Sparano Off: 17, 21, 22 Def: 9, 25, 14 Gase Off: 17, 28, 26 Def: 18, 29, 22
**** that. You are who your record and rankings say you are. This "I trust in Gase" nonsense is completely delusional and full of bull**** excuses.
You copied the wrong offensive rankings for Sparano. The ones you listed are for yards not points and from his second year in 2009: https://www.pro-football-reference.com/teams/mia/index.htm So.. Sparano Off: 21, 15, 30 In any case, Gase's offensive rankings over his first 3 years are on track to be worse (on average) than for both Sparano and Philbin.
With respect to everyone, you and Carmen have forgotten more football than I will ever know, but without proper context I don’t believe those stats tell whole story. At first glance, however, neither are ( or were) the HC we hoped they would be. IMO, considering the unusual circumstances these last couple of years Gase should get one more year. If it’s the same ole, same ole then we should move on.
Thanks for the correction (again). And yes, while the point wasn't to separate or elevate Sparano, or Philbin, or Gase, to seem like the better coach, it was simply to address how none are/were the answer at HC. *Eek. Sorry for the derail OP. Yes, Zach belongs in the HOF; obviously.
Where did I say "trust in Gase"? All I've argued is that the complaints about the record or how the offense looks are silly. Complain about Gase's play calling, fine. Complain about his unwillingness to play younger guys over vets, fine.
I loved Sparano for exactly that reason- Dan Campbell had that same fire and passion as well. Sparano's players fought for him to be kept in Miami and that's about the ultimate compliment you can give a coach. He just didn't have much talent to work with and I've heard that he tried to micromanage everything behind the scenes. I always loved those fist pumps though....I miss that sideline passion.
It's probably me, but I think I remember early on seeing Gase pretty passionate on the sideline. This year though, he seems to be much more calm. Perhaps I am wrong (as usual) and maybe the intensity is there and the guys feed off that, but it's kind of hard to tell what he is doing watching the game on TV.
Then you won't mind replacing Gase with Harbaugh! Personally I care only about results not passion. btw.. Ozzie Newsome is reported to step down in 2018 too (I guess owner wants to clean house). I'd do whatever it takes to get both.
YEah...if Harbaugh and Newsome came here as a package deal I'd be elated. My only concern is the fact that no HC has won a Super Bowl for 2 different teams. Maybe Harbaugh could be the first?
There’s always a first. Also.. sample size is VERY small for HC’s that won a SB with one team and then went to another, so that stat probably doesn’t mean anything anyway.
I just want consistency. Gase said he can win with Tannehill and that got him the job....then they won 9 of 10. Year two...we haven't had Gase/Tannehill year two yet....and really didn't even get to finish year 1. I don't necessarily disagree with you as much as I'm tired of this process- we've been doing it since Chad Henne. He had two up/down seasons, we bring in a new coach, then we shuffle to a new QB. Philbin got a few seasons, showed average results, then we put Tannehill in a completely different system under a new coach. If we do make a coaching change next season, we'll do one year with RT (in his fourth offense) and then likely have a new QB in 2020. And guess what people will say when we're a 6-10 to 9-7 team? Fire the coach...this isn't working. And then the new coach will want a new QB and we'll play this game all over again. Personally, I think we could have won with Henne/Sparano if we stayed the course. I think we were screwed under Philbin/anyone because he valued "good people" over "rugged football players". And with Gase, we've had 5 quarterbacks on the field in 3 years....with every single one of them playing hurt (except for Brock & Fales). I wanted to give Chad Henne another year. Then I wanted to stick with Moore. And now, I want to see Tannehill for the exact same reason...consistency. We haven't had that in over a decade. Pitt. NE. Seattle. Baltimore. Dallas. They're all been solid these past years because they remained consistent with their coach/QB/front office. Same system, same philosophies. It bonds a team and things do get easier with time. I'm just tired of hitting the reset button since it's like trying to find a needle in a haystack. Maybe Gase or Tannehill isn't "the guy". We can't know what we don't know. But as a stats guy, you tell me all the time that we can't pass judgement on x, y, or z due to a small sample size. I don't accept that answer- let's get the sample size and then re-evaluate. Give me 5 years with Sparano, Campbell, Gase or even Philbin. Start Fales or Falk, I'm good with that, but give them enough reps to where we know without a shadow of a doubt what we have. Just abandon the "rinse and repeat" attitude that we've had since the early 2000's. I'm really hoping we go 5-1 or 6-0 down the stretch...it doesn't seem likely. But if that happens, then we have Gase/Tannehill for a full season in 2019 and we finally get our year 2 preview moving into a full year 3. If we're not 10-6 next season then fine, let's hit reset. But I can't judge Gase on 5 different QB's (on top of hurricanes, all these injuries, etc) and I can't judge Tannehill from the bench. Maybe my attitude changes by year's end- maybe we finish 6-10 and it's a much easier call to make. I really need these last six games though with a relatively healthy Tannehill and a starting offensive line on the field.
Its a real shame that Zach isn't considered a shoo in for the HOF by the national media. There should be virtually zero debate. None. 5X first team all pro 2X second team all pro All decade team for the 2000s Led the entire league in total tackles between 1996-06.
Well he didn't have a silly dance or a "look at me, me, me" personality so of course he is going to be overlooked.
Yes, you think what the requirements are for a MLB to get in, Zach exceeded them all. Then you look at the intangibles? . Pssh. Forget about it.
Zach was an undersized linebacker whose passion for the game outweighed any of the “negatives” that came with him. He always knew where the ball was and during his heyday was the BEST cover linebacker in the league. When I think of Dolphins defenses, 3 names come to mind... 1. The No Name Defense 2. Jason Taylor 3. Zach Thomas And not necessarily in that order
Yeah. I would probably add AJ Duhe to that list, as he was always one of my favs growing up. An absolute Jet killer.
Offerdahl is a beloved former player, who was probably the team's best defender during a time where the defense as a whole was really bad and the team didn't win a whole lot. But he started 9 or fewer games in five of his eight years in the league. The dude was just always hurt. Overall, he only started 86 of a possible 128 games in his career, and only 46/80 during his final five seasons. And his Pro Bowls were probably based more on name than merit, as two of them came in seasons where he missed half the games.
