I feel like I know the answer, but how would you feel about Jim Schwartz being brought in? IMO, he could take the defense as is and make it top-level. The offensive hires would have to be good though.
I am leaning towards that, too. IMO, as we have seen, a good defense can keep an offense in the game, but if the offense is feeble and cannot sustain drives it will tire out a defense.
I wonder what happened to Falk that he needed to be put on IR? If RT continues to struggle, I would have like to have seen him get a chance. Now, we are stuck with the two has-beens and really have nothing to look forward to.
Leslie Frazier, Martinadale from the Ravens are two guy’s who intrigue me. I don’t recall why things went wrong in Mn for Frazier, but I think it was more wanting Zimmer than not wanting Frazier?? David Shaw intrigues me also, although I have no idea what type of coach he is and if it translates to the NFL.
He'd be a hire I could get on board with. He did a great job leading Detroit out of the mess they were. His defensive units are usually solid. Problem was he kind of flamed out in Detroit, I think if anyone can take advantage of a second opportunity, and improve at HC like some usually do the second time around it'd be him.
I mention him because Miami is already running his defense, and IMO, is just a few pieces and some use of personnel/sub packages away from having a pretty legitimate defense. He'd have to nail his offensive hires; that's what would give me trepidation.
Yeah THIS is the real problem as the team stands right now. I have no issues with a defensive minded HC but given the current state of the team the problem is who is going to be the OC.
Go get one of those DII head coaches that runs a Reid type offense. Get a good QB an an attacking defense. I like the way the Ravens are built.
He broke his wrist. He could have made it back this season but he wasn't going to play anyway so I think they stashed him for next year.
Yesterday just proved that he will never be anything other than a bang average QB. He should go after this year (and the way things are going , Gase can go with him)
LOL, how does a 4th string QB break his wrist? It almost couldn't have been football related. I mean, did he fall off the bench or slip in the shower?
They were what we thought they were, What we thought they were. They are who we thought they were. That’s why we took the damn field. If you want to crown them, then crown their asses. But they are who we thought they were. And we let them off the hook.”
If I remember correctly he played with a broken wrist almost all of last season. I wonder if he somehow reinjured it in the weight room?
Do you know if it is his throwing hand? I assume it isn't. When we fall, we usually brace ourselves with our other hand and protect the hand we use the most.
I could live with that as long as we choose a QB in the 1st, or you could try trading Tannehill. He quickly becomes cheap if a team is willing to stick with him for many years. I mean seriously.. wouldn't Jacksonville be interested? Tannehill > Bortles, at least on average.
With the way it's currently constructed, the NFL is a passer's paradise and yet Tannehill is only mustering 194.4 yards/g which places him the 29th lowest in the league. The average is basically 276.9. I'm sorry, but that is an abomination. It's an indictment of both the QB and phony guru Gase. It's an even crazier stat given that heading into that Bengals game the team had only given up something like 24 or 26 QB pressures.
Tannehill is HORRIBLE>>>> and don't give me this crap about the O-Line. They are HORRIBLE also.... We are what we thought we are. That’s why we took the damn field. If you want to crown them, then crown their asses. But we are who we thought we were. And we let them off the hook. Does this sound familiar? LOL (the late famous "RIP" Dennis Green)
Speaking of other QBs, Brees just passed Manning for career passing yards. I wonder what Culpepper is up to right now.
Well, he wasn't going to play this season anyway, so it's smart to get the procedure done and wear a cast for awhile. He's getting paid either way and he can still learn the concepts/playbook during recovery. It was a smart move.
OK, this is the first ti e I can remember Tannehill putting back to back bad games together. But, the simple fact is that Tannehill does his best work from a script, where everyone is doing what they’re supposed to. To be elite in the NFL you need to be able to create in chaos as well as producing from the script. I think it’s time yo start making serious plans to move on from Tannehill, but at the same time he is serviceable and does enough to help the team be competitive. With good health on the Oline I see Tannehill being able to take this team into 11-5 territory, but he can’t overcome sub par OL play by himself. I can’t see him standing up in the playoffs and overcoming a high caliber defense that’s throwing curveballs. I can see Tannehill being a good enough QB to win a SB, but it needs the rest of the team, especially the OL, to to be better than average. And in today’s NFL with the practise restrictions it is nearly impossible to build a strong and deep,OL.
I think it's more of an indictment to RT not being on time with his throws which doesn't allow his WR's, who are some of the fastest men in the league, to get any run after the catch. Take Amendola for example. When Brady was throwing him the ball he would get tons of YAC. Watch the current Pats. Brady gets 80% of his passing yards from YAC. Gase is attempting to mimic that style of offense, but RT isn't up for it. I've re-watched both the 3rd and 4th games coach's tape from this season. Gase isn't really calling bad plays. Sure, he isn't perfect. He's definitely setting up the opponents defense's for some long plays, but for the most part he's running a near exact replica of the Pats offense. But, again, RT just can't get up to speed. Add to it the poor run blocking and this is what we see.
RT isn't "horrible". He's just not the answer for how Gase wants his offense to run. And talking about the o-line is certainly a part of talking about the QB. RT needs to be in an offense with a great o-line and good running game. RT can make all of the throws, but he just doesn't process the info fast enough. I think even with a great o-line, in this offense, he may not excel because he needs to have the ball out at precisely the right moment and on a dime. And the timing part doesn't look like it's something he can ever do.
He's done that quite a few times. In 2012 he had consecutive 42.4 and 46.9 ratings, in 2013 he had consecutive 45.6 and 42.1 ratings (you HAVE to remember those.. that was against Buffalo and the Jets and we missed the playoffs because of that!), in 2015 he had consecutive 59.7 and 53 ratings, and of course in 2018 he just had consecutive 47.9 and 57.4 ratings. https://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/T/TannRy00/gamelog/ He's never had 3 consecutive sub-60 ratings though, but he'll be tested this time because Chicago has the #3 defense by points per game.
In today's NFL, if you need to qualify a QB as 'needing' a good OL and running game to have success and be good himself ... you shouldn't be starting. As much as we ***** about OL here, the state of the NFL OL is in shambles in general. There is NOT depth pretty much anywhere. Injuries will happen, ita almost a guarantee. So, you can either spend ludicrous resources and end up like Dallas starved for playmakers and still with OL questions, get really lucky with health, or find a QB who can make plays.
I think there's a lot of merit to your post. It seems a good to great o-line is the unicorn in today's NFL. Even the Cowboys seem to have lost their o-line magic. I posted an article awhile back talking about how offensive lineman in the NFL have suffered the most when the CBA changed the way teams practice. Linemen need the physical contact in order to gel and work as a team. Without it we see what we see in today's NFL.
danmarino, I think you sum up things nicely regarding Tannehill! We need an upgrade, but unfortunately I am hearing many don't think much of this years QB class. Typical Dolphin luck, the season could tank, we need a QB, and there isn't one worth the pick. I don't want a RT clone. I want someone who is athletic, accurate, and has a lightning quick release. Not asking for much, am I? LOL!
The way the league functions, it's precisely the distinction you're making (between QBs who frequently improvise and make plays, and those who do not) that largely distinguishes the best teams from the rest. The QB position in general creates the primary distinction among teams, and the particular element of QB play you mentioned is largely responsible for distinctions among QBs. Consequently if you have a QB like Tannehill, there is a ceiling on how good your team can be. One particular trait in one particular player can largely determine how well an entire team plays, in today's NFL.
It's not just that, but I read somewhere the shift in college offenses is causing a dearth of good linemen at that level coming into the league. It's basically a league wide shortage.
