I know the season isn't even halfway started, but I never stop looking ahead. DTs in 2019...we might see 4 or 5 in first round. Ed Oliver, Raekwon Davis, Rashan Gary(DT/DE), Christian Wilkins, Derrick Brown...if this current roster develops like it should, getting a stud DT could be in play next year. There is some crazy talent at DT...I am sure there are many others, but these are a few of the guys I really like.
Interesting. I was just thinking about this. Providing our this draft class works out pretty decent, other than QB for developmental purposes, I hope we focus on the defense again.
Never know what your gonna need next year, young players like Phillips, Godchaux, Taylor, etc might step up..you also never know who’s going to digress or not pan out.. To early for me to decide on needs but I see your point, it might be an area we need so let’s keep an eye out.
Agree completely. We have several young players on the Dline that could blow up. It would be a great "problem" to have...
Even if Phillips plays well, I would be cautious about giving him a lot of money, same could be said about Parker. Already lost Suh. I see Phillips, Branch, Spence, (hopefully not Hayes) all gone. Also Wake would be a year older. I liked what I saw out of Harris but he is still an unknown. Next year could defo make sense go D line
I would love for Phillips to play well. He is just not some one I would pay a lot of guaranteed money too off of one solid/great year
flashes brilliance in one play/one series/game or 2 but then vanishes and does nothing for a few games. Way to inconsistent. There have been red flags about him since the day that he was drafted about his motor. I liked Suh mentoring him and every season, kind of like Parker I wait to see him develop into his potential. Have not had the rewards that I would have wanted bye now and would not bet that once he gets a pot o guaranteed money is going to change that.
I was thinking about this as well. As DJ said, its very early. However, if things go well, then DT does look like one of our thinnest positions, and if that's one of the deepest ones in next April's draft, then that works out great for us.
I agree with this...unless he becomes a consistent wreck for opposing OL, I'm inclined to let him test the market, ala Stills. Now, lets say he has a season like Xavien last year. First half, same ol JP, last half, second coming of Mean Joe Greene. I'd be willing to extend him with big money guaranteed if he's on the roster three days after the 2020 league year starts. So we can make sure it wasn't a mirage, the guy is really playing up to his potential. He and DVP are very similar...both have physical ability to be crazy good--and both are crazy average.
I think it depends on godchauxs development in year 2 more than anything else. I also think phillips is in miamis plans for the future. In terms of bang for your buck relative to snaps played phillips graded out very well in 2017. Imo de is the current club house lead for talent add in 2019.
It's exactly why we didn't pick one in the draft this year...and why we were lucky as **** to get Gesicki this year as opposed to dipping into the talent pool last year.
