DAVIE — Miami Dolphins linebacker Raekwon McMillan (knee) and cornerback Tony Lippett (Achilles) are both returning from season-ending injuries.

But it seems McMillan is a bit ahead in his recovery. Both are cleared, obviously, but Lippett may be a bit more restricted in the spring.

“Obviously they’re participating,” coach Adam Gase said Wednesday. “We’re keeping an eye on both of them. ‘Lip’ (Tony Lippett), we’re just making sure … That’s kind of a different injury for his position. There’s a lot of plant and drive and a lot of stress on the whole Achilles thing. We’re trying to be smart and be sure that he feels good and get him confident and ready to go, to where he feels like he can play at the level that he was playing at the end of the season a couple of years ago.”

The Dolphins could really use Lippett to recover strong and press starting cornerback Cordrea Tankersley. The Dolphins do not have great depth at corner, behind Tankersely and starter Xavien Howard.

The Dolphins have late-round draft choice Cornell Armstrong and undrafted corners Torry McTyer, Jalen Davis and Taveze Calhoun. In a pinch, slot corner Bobby McCain could play some outside, with rookie Minkah Fitzpatrick moving to nickel corner.

Despite never having taken a snap at linebacker, even in a preseason game, McMillan is clearly a defensive leader. He was in control on the practice field on Wednesday.

And Gase seems to have little concern about McMillan’s health.

“Raekwon, I feel like we’re in a good spot with him right now,” Gase said. “I still think we’re all just kind of watching. Those defensive players are probably a little less protected. Ryan (Tannehill) is in a different spot to where nobody was really going to come around him as much. Those (linebackers) are kind of getting tangled up with bodies quite a bit. We’ll just keep an eye on it, but we feel good with where they’re at right now.”

So McMillan is pretty much full-go?

“I’d say Tony we’re probably a little more limited,” Gase said. “Raekwon, I don’t know if he’s letting us allow him to be limited.”

    From PFT:

Quarterback Ryan Tannehill‘s return to the field has been a major storyline for the Dolphins this offseason, but he’s not the only player on the road back from a season-ending knee injury.

Linebacker Raekwon McMillan tore his ACL on his first snap of his first NFL preseason game and the 2017 second-round pick went from prospective starter to the operating room. McMillan went to rehab the injury from there and found himself working alongside Tannehill.

He also worked against Tannehill, albeit in a friendly competition that McMillan said helped push him on his way to a full recovery.

“We got our surgery on the same exact day,” McMillan said, via the Miami Herald. “We starting rehab on the same exact day. From Day 1, it was always a competition. Who could walk without their crutches first? Who could run full speed underwater first? It was just little stuff. Who can get a bigger quad muscle? It was just really stupid stuff like that to keep competing with each other.”

McMillan was set for a major role in the middle of the Dolphins defense last year and the team hopes to have him using his competitive juices to fill it for a longer stretch this season.

I thought it was funny- in another article McMillian was talking about the contest and said that Tannehill was better with pain management and hit most of the milestones before him.....but McMillian told the media he still felt like he "definitely won" the contest overall. =)
