I love this dude. Great leader, impact player, and a huge heart. Unfortunately, he isn't going to get drafted very early. The absolute highest I could see him going is in the 3rd, but there are pundits who expect him to go in the final two rounds. Personally, I'd draft him in the fourth, and that's what I think Miami is going to do.
Impact player, great leaders and huge hearts don’t get drafted in the 4th... you will miss out on him in that round.
All the decent tight ends are projected to go in the second, it would make more sense to roll the dice and wait till the third...odds are he will still be there
I mean, here's a list of 30 players that were impactful, leaders, and had huge hearts that didn't even get drafted: http://www.nfl.com/photoessays/0ap3000000663921 So yes, they do get drafted in the 4th. And sometimes they don't get drafted at all. But to be clear, that's my interpretation of him. Across league circles, he is widely expected to go between the 4th and 7th frames.
I will say the difference is that its rare for those traits to also be coupled with elite athleticism and extreme production... and yet fall to the 4th or lower...
Prez..I would of bet anything he would of went by the end of the 3rd round so I admit Prez, you were right on where this kid is gonna get drafted. Here's to hoping we get another charity shot in the 4th.
We all have players we think of more highly that the pros. One thing I learned about the pros over the years is the first three rounds they are ruled by a fear of being wrong more than a hope of being right. Rounds 4-7 it reverses though and that' when they start taking chances
In terms of evaluating our front office, Jerome baker is gonna have a tough competition over the next three years..
for those who really wanted this player and were willing to draft him earlier than when he went..I think it will be real interesting to keep tabs on him considering we had a need for a player like that, and he was more than attainable. I think it’s one good way to judge our front office..we took a player in Baker who is almost the exact same size..so we know it’s not a size thing, they wanted a quick fast cover backer who can run and cover and do some other things.. So here we go.. “Shaquem] looked very aggressive,” Carroll said. “We had to slow him down some early on in the practice and in the walk through, he was going too hard. So we had to chill him out a little bit. But he’s very excited about being here. He’s a very good looking prospect. He’s big and fast and had a good feel for what’s going on. Obviously, [brother Shaquil Griffin] had done a little bit of tutoring – he was ahead of us a little bit with his learning, which was good.” As a fifth-round pick, there’s no guarantee that Shaquem Griffin will make the 53-man roster. But he likely slid due more to the fact that he’s missing a hand than the notion that he can’t bring it..”
I really wish the premise of this thread was more of a “watch and root for Griffin” thread than a “track this kid to see if our FO screwed up” thread. DJ... people are going to inherently be defensive of the Fins... and threads like this are only going to make some root against him (even subconsciously) so that the Fins weren’t wrong. Let’s track our own players... and root for this kid.
you have to understand Nasty, I don’t know about you but I’m pi##ed off they didn’t take him.. If some root against him then they have issues...It really is nothing against our tru blood Baker, hope to hell this kid is the goods.. But, I think it’s important to make them somewhat accountable for choices we can clearly get a bead on.
Lol I kinda picked up on that. To be honest, I’m not pissed. If he ended up going to the Browns or something... I would be. But I’m thrilled he’s in Seattle. Besides reuniting the twins, I really wanted him to go to a great organization with good coaching and a good schematic fit (or to a creative defense that could maximize his talents). If it wasn’t the Fins, I wanted it to be Seattle or Pittsburg. And I honestly was somewhat scared we’d draft him, mis-use him, and ruin/doom him anyway lol (Dion Jordan style). So... I’m honestly thrilled he’s in Seattle. The Fins missed out on one hell of a player IMO... but he’s right where I want him. Can’t wait to watch him in Seattle.
Maybe that’s because of your connection to your school, you had him, you celebrated him and you got your fill, he will always be a knight in your heart..so you dont have that same desire and anger as I do..
I am rooting HARD for the kid but at the same time, I can see why some teams may not have drafted him. And if I'm being perfectly honest, it makes it the perfect story for him being in Seattle with his brother. I don't fault the Fins for not taking a chance on him.
I will say... this is kinda his thing. In his life, he’s never been able to afford to not go 100% on every snap in practice, let alone games.
Huh, you don’t fault them?, what does that mean? I guess your basing that on he wont become a really good football player, because if he does, and that’s better than the player they selected in the third, then they are most certainly at fault. Not drafting him so he can reunite with his brother is ridiculous notion so I don’t think that’s what you mean.
He’s not faulting them b/c he said he understands the concerns/doubts the team may have had about him... but that regardless he’s rooting for him.
Forecasting here, let’s just say for this point, that Griffin becomes what a few of us think he will become, and he becomes the better player then Baker. Then absolutely we need to fault them for making a very poor evaluation, period.. The only way this isn’t a fail of an evaluation is if Baker is better..and I hope for our sake, he really is. I’m just debating on the idea that this is a pure, very clear, front office evaluation. So tell me Nasty, you don’t fault them?, if true why is that?
What happened to “It really is nothing against our tru blood Baker”? lol And regarding Quem... I’m probably more emotionally attached to him as a player than I am the Fins as a team, lol. So, I want what’s best for him and if I’m being depressingly honest, I don’t know if we are the best organization to ensure his success. I lack faith in our team... lol Sure I’ll fault them in their evaluation if he pans out like I think he will... but ultimately I’m happy with the end result of where he landed so I’m not bent out of shape that we passed on him.
You have to realize though that there were literally hundreds of players we could have taken with that pick. Will one of them be better than Baker overall? Probably so...that's just the law of averages. The part you're ignoring though is that you are personally invested in Griffin and not looking at this objectively. Miami wanted speed at LB and felt Baker best fit their needs for the overall defense. He might be amazing...I hope he is...and it's not an insult that the Dolphins or anyone else didn't draft him before Seattle did. You're trying to twist this into something it's not. You're just assuming that Miami saw a one-armed player and said no thank you....I don't think that was the case here at all.
Your miss reading me..that’s why I said this is a pure judgement of evaluation, it’s not personal with Baker he just happens to be the guy they picked over griffin, so obviously he’s the measuring stick in this exercise..It’s a given that I want him to be better than Griffin..
That’s not correct Key, the team targeted a fast cover linebacker, they chose Baker, ok that’s fine, I respect their conviction, so griffin is in play for this evaluation of them and their scouting skills. It’s quite Simple, completely an objective exercise in scouting, everything matches up to do so.
Basically take my affinity for the player out of the process, We wanted a fast linebacker, we targeted one, and We took Baker not Griffin, so the judgement is based on who is better, and how much, pretty simple.
That would have been a better tack. When you have a poster who is pissed off and won't stop kicking a dead horse it often makes even people who would have been inclined to root for a player on a another team turn and start rooting against him. Really they're not rooting against the player, but rooting for the poster to get over it.
Well... I'm rooting for Mikah to win DROY... And I'm rooting for Griff and Baker. Life's to short to worry about coulda shouldas...both players will do well for their respective teams.
it’s an exercise in scouting talent, I’m curious..you don’t have to be as interested as I.. I’m right here, we’ve been on these boards for a decade, So you dont have to talk in some sort of third party reference
“The human-interest side of Griffin’s story is why we’ll pay more attention to him than most fifth-round picks (it’s also why so many people are buying his jersey), but it seems the football part of the tale is coming along quite well. Griffin impressed Seahawks coach Pete Carroll at the team’s minicamp, where he played weak-side linebacker. “He looked very comfortable, very natural,” Carroll said, according to the team’s transcripts. “He has a sense already for scheme and terminology. The position is the right spot for him, it looks like. We can be aggressive and use his speed. He’s already shown some sense in the passing game and he had a couple really good plays adjusting to zone coverage and man coverage and things we’ve already seen. So those were good things to take away. And we can’t really get a feel at all for special teams but we know that that’s going to be a factor so we’re excited about that.” https://sports.yahoo.com/seahawks-happy-lb-shaquem-griffin-first-nfl-minicamp-161514863.html
I think if your really going to compare Baker vs Griffin as to which player should have been drafted by the Miami Dolphins, we first need to understand how Seattle plans on using Griff, and how Miami uses Baker. The other thing to keep in mind, I don't think this kind of comparison can really be done over the course of just one season...you really need two full seasons to get a good picture of what kinds of players they will end up being...
Does it need to be limited to JUST those two players though? If you truly wanted to be objective, I think you would include Lorenzo Carter, Fred Warner both taken just before us we could have traded up for... Oren Burks, Dorien O'Daniel also speed LBs taken in the 3rd round. Baker did have a 2-3 round grade for the draft. Griffin had a 4-5 round grade for the draft.
I don’t know if you can count the big LBs that you listed that have very different size/speed characteristics... but for reference, these are all of the smaller/speedier linebackers taken before pick 141 that are within a half inch and a meal at McDonalds in height/weight of Griffin. Roquon Smith - 6'0 7/8" 235lbs Jerome Baker - 6'1 1/8" 229lbs Dorian O'Daniel - 6'0 1/2" 223lbs Josey Jewell - 6'1 234lbs Joel Iyiegbuniwe - 6'1 229lbs Kenny Young - 6'1 236lbs Shaquem Griffin - 6'0 1/2" 227lbs
